watching my car die

Shocking..!
Definitely started on the r/h side of the engine bay and looking at the melting goo on the floor, right below the turbo. Dense black smoke too.
I'd hazard a guess at oil getting onto turbo hot side..?
Did you have and signs before hand, ie oil temp..?
FFS, imagine these horrible instances where people get trapped in something like that.. Makes me think of that Family of 4 that died on the M6 last autumn..
So the main thing is you got out safely and no one was hurt..!

the fire spread a lot quicker because of the bonnet vents probably, and the fact the passenger door is open.
Still, as per most of the other posts here, glad you werent hurt. Thats the main thing

Not nice, happened to a friend of mine's rally car a few years ago. Fixed extinguisher system and 2 hand held units didn't touch it and he lost the car.
Be aware that most of the plumbed in AFFF fire extinguisher systems aren't intended to extinguish a fire. They are primarily for competition use and intended to buy the crew enough time to get out.
If you want to stand half a chance at putting out a small engine fire, get yourself one of the now banned Halon extinguishers.

actually thinking about a fixed system myself after seeing this, after all the £1000`s ive thrown at it a little more is just a drop in the ocean really, going by what he say`s a portable one wouldent have made a jot of difference as he couldent open the bonnet to get to it, plumbed in is the way to go!
Even the plumbed systems dont work very well, if at all.

Gutted for you Jim.
Having been in a very similar situation as yourself a few years back, I understand the feeling all too well.
The main thing though is that you are well enough to tell the tale.
