Plumbed in AFFF systems will have two nozzles under the bonnet, one front and one bac, on opposite corners. It is true that they dont always work: if theyre pointing right where theyre needed then foam isnt that bad, but it is certainly far short of halon, which fill chase out all of the oxygen and snuff out any fire.

You can usually do more with a two litre hand held: but youll also need a pair of gloves and a pry bar in order to get the bonnet up, in order that you can tackle the source of the fire.

Halon extinguishers are still available, but for very restricted applications...

hope it works out for you mate
Mine burst in to flames on a dual carriage way last week, had a serious engine failure which blew oil on to the hot exhaust which caught alight, luckily M444GY had a fire extinguisher on him and we put it out straight away before it had a chance to tear through the car..

How does Halon work exactly? That's the gas in Terminator 2 when Arnie is in the building with the gatling gun, isn't it?

I take it it's hard to come by because it's not good for you...

It displaces the oxygen. It wasnt brilliant for ozone either; hence the man banned it. Theyre illegal like drugs since about 2004/2004 and you can only use them if youre the military, in the channel tunnel or in a plane. I believe that those have to use recycled halon too.....

So glad youre okay fella.

Was one of my the nicest bugeyes on SN.

Makes me wanna be sick, seeing those images. Words cant discribe how you must feel. Still at least as horrible as it is, the car can be replaced, you my friend cannot.

Take care, keep us posted on your progress

What an awful thing to have to stand and watch - helpless.

Having only had my Scooby since July I have realised they are more than a car - they are part of the family - well mine is, and I know the husband agrees (if I tel him to!!)

Good luck with your new venture - I'm sure she will look just as sweet!

For those interested: halon replacement extinguishers are available. Theyre virtually as efficient as halon and theyre better than aqueous foam and theyre a damned sight better than powder. AFFF is good at putting out fires and its excellent for use in a hand held extinguisher, but its less impressive in a plumbed in system: its weakness lies with its directional nozzles. The foam only goes where the nozzles point and it cant go around corners: with only two nozzles under the bonnet (front & back on opposing corners), whether your extinguishant will hit the fire is a matter of luck... Gases will fill the engine compartment and snuff out flames with far greater efficiency/success, although they do cost a good deal more (and Ive only seen FIA standard electrical kits on sale, no old school cable operated systems).

Speaking of powder extinguishers: anyone who has one in their car needs to take it out and give it a damned good shake every month!

What a horrible thing to have to watch. Glad you got out mate, it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

Had this happen to me in 2 cars Ive been mapping so i know the fear you felt and how you probably got out of the car whilst it was still moving.

If she has thrown a rod then no powder or plumbed in extinguisher would have likely helped you. Gas is the only way forward and I carry it with every mapping job, just in case but even then, if you cant open the bonnet, all you can do is leave it to burn.

Sad for you mate.

He posted up on SIDC that a mate of his had poped over to see the car and there was a rather large hole in the block by no 3 so as you say not much could have been done.
