Far too many blokes are led by their Mrs when it comes to gadgets, put your foot down as Chris says!!

We have the Panny 37 btw and it looks fine in the room once you get used to it.

As for Plasma power consumption, do people really care about that? Its very close these days between plasma and LCD, but even so, if it cost an extra £50 a year for plasma (which it wont) it's worth it, LCD over 32" is rubbish, end of story.

But if you do go LCD, try a Sony. We have a 32" Sony in the kitchen and its excellent. My bro in laws Samsung 40" LCD is terrible.

Just connected my xbox to the px80b via hdmi. Not impressed. Straight away I noticed that the xbox dash looked a bit 'grainy' and this was confirmed when I threw in Ironman on dvd. Tried it on both 760p and 1080i. Swapped back to the component lead and the quality was back again. Do I have a duff lead? Only paid £5 from argos.

You get what you pay for, with cables and Leads,

A mate of mine is proper into his audio. £1000 per metre for cable. £50K musical Fidelty Setup with 6 ft Chord floor standing Speakers. The difference between that stuff and the £15/ 20 metre roll of monster cable was astonishing.

Go and buy a decent HDMI cable £50 plus and you'll immediatley see the difference.

But surely a digital signal is a digital signal? If it gets from one end to the other, job done?

No you won't, if you buy a mouse with a gold plated plug will you notice the difference? same thing with HDMI cables. Unless it's a long run you don't need 50 quid cables.

Buy another it sounds like it a duff. I got mine off Amazon and paid about 10 quid each.

Expensive leads good for analogue.
Cheap is good for digital- there are no 'hues' only 1's and '0's.

Wrong ! As the others have said, with an analogue signal the cabling is very influential to the quality of the signal, whether audio or video. I myself have audio interconnects worth £100+ and speaker cables over £200. However, I get my HDMI and digital coax cables from Kenable for £2-3 a time and have no quibbles with them at all.

A delicate analogue signal like this...

...will be severely altered by the resistance of the cable, quality of the shielding (magnetic and RF), quality if the connections etc whereas a digital signal is simply eight 1's or 0's like....

....and as long as there is a connection they will get through, unaltered and unaffected by any external influences or physical properties. Of course, the nice man in Comet whom wants to sell you an £80+ cable will tell you otherwise.

Different question - how come plasmas that arent HD get good reviews i.e some that have 780 'lines' (old habits die hard) as opposed to 1080 get reviewed higher. Odd if they seem to have much less display resolution and actually chuck masses of incoming HD data away and are forced to manipulate it and effectively downscale it. Very puzzled!

As I understand most HD info is max 720ish. 1080 is only from blu-ray so for Sky HD, xbox, ps3 etc the tv is having to actually scale the picture up.

Well I have just had a play with the settings on the PX80B. After reducing the sharpness, the picture via hdmi in 720p format is looking very crisp. I think it takes a bit of getting used to when viewing hd feeds!

Bloody tv's! Just signed up for Sky HD so need a new Tv soon

It's going to be a panasonic but which. 42" is about right for the living room. 46" does tempt me but may dominate too much. I'm thinking the new x10 panny is the one to go for but I'm tempted with a 1080p set although i know I don't 'really' need it.

Top budget is £750 so what do you guys think? I'm buying in the next month.

Oh dear, you are a dream customer for Comet or Currys

Nothing like duff information presented as fact - fact is, as said HDMI cables are all the same, you can't change 1's and 0's unless you are running a very very long run!!

I bought my HDMI cables from Amazon for £4 or so and they are excellent. Re the Xbox, I only have a mk1 non HDMI but component is lovely PQ wise.

I actually prefer the look of component over HDMI.

I recently bought a Samsung 32" 4-series television and so far I am very happy with it. In my opinion, it's the best LCD TV that's falls within my budget available. Good great quality picture for a very affordable price.
