it would make sense as my car has a few miles on it.more likely than coil packs?

99greenwagon - - Had the plugs changed on the service recently with Subaru and they didnt make a difference! My next guess was the coil packs/leads but would have thought they would have noticed if they were dodgy?? If you do do yours on the weekend can you please post if it makes a difference?
Cheers

Do you know your way round a multi-meter? If so you could test the coil packs and see if they are ok.

i always thought that dodgy plugs and leads result in really bad firing problems etc.

I had all the problems you guys have mentioned and replaced every thing you have suggested even the coil packs and plugs. It made no difference at all.
After a day in the garage it turned out to be a faulty water temp sensor. I had replaced this but with one from a Scooby down the scrap yard. Bad idea.
Its completely fine now and only cost £30 on ebay for a new one. You would be surprised what a faulty water temp sensor will make you car run like. Id get one if I was you and at £30 its worth trying this before you try coil packs, plugs ect. But I bet ya this solves the problem
Hope it helps mate as I no how your feeling. Took me over a month to sort mine.

Its under the inlet manifold on the top left (closest to the bulk head). You might have to take the pipe off the turbo to get at it. Its Screwed in horizontally. You shouldn’t be able to miss it. Put a post up to see if anyone has some pictures of it. Someone might as its quite a common problem

Find the water crossover pipe in between the inlet manifold and block, make sure your standing looking at side of the engine on drivers side and it will be hidden under all the sud as in this pic.

Good Luck.

Also a worthy mention do your rad fans come on? if they constandtly stay on or do not go off at all when the temp comes down then this sensor is definitely faulty.

That's not normal but then again these engines due tend to run very hot. Hmm got me thinking now.....and i would say 75% its sensor fault.

This is no ordinary sensor unlike old cars - this sensor sends signals to the ECU and this will then control things from there so an example would be a dodgy signal from this sensor is causing your motor to cough and splutter at low RPM....remember the ECU controls the rad fans too so if this coolant sensor is sending the wrong signal then the fans will also start to act in strange ways.

V5's are 3 pin but it will only take you 5 mins to double check and it's advisable...

Heres a V5 sensor anyway>>>>

Hope that helps

Baly

Guy, thats a version 5 1999 sensor above and it's a 3 pin so yes if yours is a v5 1999 then yes it's a 3 pin.. ..but surely you could just pull the plug out of your existing one and double check couldn't you?

As it wouldn't be the first time somebody had doctored a loom.. ..and considering your finances right now a double check won't hurt.

yeah thats brilliant mate cheers.defo 99 version 5,its got the crystal lights{face lift}bumper etc. it may have been a coinsidence with the fan,it may have been a bit longer than 10 mins but car ran ok ish after cleaning icv, when i pulled up on my drive idle was settled ok,i blipped the throttle and then it dropped to nearly 0 and wavered up and down between 0 and 1,if u then switch car off and back on its then ok,again until u get up 2 temp then it starts to play up.what u think now?

I've had this problem before and it relates to coolant level/sensor. (i'm 70% sure yours is the same issue)

Do ensure you haven't got an air lock in the water system though and ensure coolant level is ok as low coolant also has the same affect.

Baly

EDIT>>> I'm assuming the ICV and hoses are all ok and have been checked?

coolant level was a bit low the other day so i topped up with about half a pint.that wouldnt give an air lock surely?idle is the very main problem but general driving is ok,a little hesitant under alot of load in the higher gears.it almost stalls when it does this.definetely dosent seem like misfire etc.when i reset ecu the other day the revs went up to 3k and back down about 3 times then settled, this was after cleaning icv,but after that idle fault is still there.when your 70% turns into 99% ill be happy cheers for this sti baly any more info on symptoms would be great.

sounds like you have a faulty idle control valve, try unpluging it and starting the car,

the problem you describe is exactly the same that occurs on MK2/3 golfs GTI's

at standstill will idle ok even when throttle blipped -- but when slowing down in traffic the revs drop and drop and drop -- they may come back to idle but often just die

this is really common and always something called the ISV idle stabilization Valve -- not sure if scoobies have them -- from above post it maybe called the ICV --
