I think I can give some good advice on this as I swapped my BMW 330 Sport for a 2004 STi a few years ago. Firstly, running costs; it's swings and roundabouts really. In the BMW I averaged about 25mpg, but with the Scooby I got between 18-20 as use my cars every day for commuting. Servicing was no where near on the Scooby as the Beemer, neither were the tyres. The cheapest I could get some rears for on the Beamer was £210 per tyre (BMW wanted £290) for the Michelins. The bridgestones for the scooby I paid £98. On both cars the tyres lasted about a year (rears on Beemer, fronts on Scooby). The only other issue was the clutch, I only got 25k out of the Scooby :-/
As for the cars themselves, the Beemer was obviously much more refined but I did not regret for one second swapping it for the Scooby. Once you've driven a Scooby nothing esle will do. After a year of owning a Scooby I almost swapped it for a M3 but decided against it in the end as I prefered the Scooby. Yes the M3 is a better car, but the Scooby somehow feels a part of you (I'm sure the rest of the Scooby bunch will understand this). And that turbo, how addictive is that? ;-) Oh, and one more thing, how bad are Beemers in the snow? I couldn't go anywhere in mine.

I know, rear wheel drive cars are useless in the snow. I used to dread when we had snow as I live at the top of a hill and it would be impossible to get home. I'm already sold on the Impreza idea. I just need to find the right one.
