Scooby - that's pretty nasty. Even a smallish wave can do a lot of damage.
I've very nearly drowned twice, bust my nose, sliced open my face (Mrs Matt fainted when she saw it) with my own fin, dislocated my shoulder about 8 times, bust my neck, cracked ribs, ripped open my hand, etc, etc - all definitely not recommended but still come back for more. Cos I'm gay you see?!!

I've just been having a chat with our Lesley about this thread and we have concluded that men are without doubt bitchier than wimmins as this thread so nicely demostrates Can any of you blokes imagine us Scoobynet wimmins going on at each other like you lot are doing?
"I'm fitter than you" "Yeah but you have a saggy biff", "My ***** are bigger than yours" "At least mine don't face my feet" etc etc
The way I see it is this, Matteeboy is fit and proud of it, he posts a pic, some of you think he's showing off and tell him so, he gets the hump, handbags fly, the jokes start but sensitivity levels are already high and some don't get the jokes, more handbags fly, with all intelligent humour exhausted the gay accusations are thrown in (always a surefire bet for a snigger), the bandwagon jumpers leap on, even more handbags fly, A few nice pics of some fit blokes are posted, the wimmins letch, the men think "what's he got that I haven't? Harrumph, I'll call him gay", more jump on that wagon, the OP gets the hump, thus starts the whole cycle again ad infinitum...
But you have to admit the tags are blinking funny I mean that with no offence to you Matt, you know that

Well said there
If Matt ignores jibes and play with the humour, it will make a pleasant change.
Tags are funny indeed, even when they are not necessarily in the realistic context of this thread anyway.

Hodgy - I think every surfer has that book! I still use it when going abroad!
It was down that way -some serious power down there, although the East coast of South Island NZ still packed the most power of anywhere I have surfed. Sea is over 2km deep then rises almost vertically to the shore - so the waves have almost nothing to stop them (bit like Hawaii)!

You wimmins are much more subtle, you will wait for the intended victim to be out of earshot before the bitching commences

That the "lady" doth protest too much, etc, etc.
Perhaps you are so keen to brand me gay that it actually speaks volumes about yourself? And indeed the others - as Scoobychick rightly pointed out, many SNers aren't happy about me posting surf/excercise pics (which lets face it, are about as gay as Chuck Norris) so use the "gay" card. Sorry I have a "real" life and pictures to go with it. Sorry I keep fit. Sorry I can surf. I must humbly apologise to all those bitter SNers who flail their little pale arms around in dismay as a "real" person actually comes to the board.
Funny that those genuinely into exercise, watersports (the clean variety), etc are happy to chat, discuss, etc. The ones who just snipe like GC8, you, Davyboy etc are clearly rather unhappy. A quick check of threads rapidly confirms that all of you with a bitter streak are rather sad individuals that love nothing more than posting snipes.
It's good to bring a forum to life with "real" pics - and I really am interested in anyone doing the same - be it someone scoring a goal at footie (even though I don't like it), sailing, doing a track day, whatever. It's the stuff we do in "real life" that is interesting, not endless threads of bitterness and thinly disguised anguish.

The gayometer is now broken this thread has now surpassed the gayness level of all the supremely gay threads that have been before.

Has anyone seen that video...can't remember what it's called where this guy gets towed up this massive wave by a boat and then he lets go and surfs it!? It looked fake at the time I watched it...just wondering whether you Mattee could shed any light on this as I've often wondered - it was an amazing video! Would be cool if it was real!

Missy - There are a few massive wave spots - Outer Log Cabins, Jaws and others.
I think the one Dave posted in Outer Log Cabins (USA). Another evil one is Cortez Bank and this one in Western Oz:
YouTube - BillabongXXL.com Ride of the Year Entry
It's very popular doing tow ins - usually using a very powerful jetski. Means you don't have to paddle onto it - the bigger the wave, the faster is it and the harder it is to catch so traditional big wave boards are massive so they can be paddled fast - but once on the wave they are very unwieldy. The tow in boards are much smaller.
They even tow in at Newquay at a big wave spot called the Cribber.
Not really my cup of tea but amazing to watch. I'm more of a "trick" surfer.

GC8 - I was hoping women might look and men might ignore. I failed. Miserably.
Anyway, the original pic looks much less "ar5ey" - for some reason when the guy "touched up" (not doing myself any favours here...) the photo, my butt also grew. Very odd.

Some decent waves closer to home - Aileen is not a nice irish girl, but a big wave even by world standards, complicated by being at the foot of the 7-900 foot high cliffs of Moher in the West of Ireland, but it's a tow in like the other giant waves so is in the circus territory for me.
While on the west coast of Ireland anyone who likes a long wave should try Inch strand in Kerry - it's a cliff climb down/jump in, but it just keeps on going and going and going - have a look here.YouTube - Surf Ireland Kerry. Plenty of time to work the wave...
