I'm not sure if the same person was driving the car but on the first session out I was having a passenger ride and this car span right in front of us at the same corner!!!!
Glad to see no one was hurt.
Anyone know the number of people who span at lodge? I was only there until 12 and I saw 2 scoobs and the black Lotus go off.

 

Glad everyone was ok. Look's like that extra weight for crash protection was worth it.
BTW is the car a MY0.5 now?

 

Damage not too bad - it'll polish out.

If it doesn't then I bags the rear brakes and intercooler.

1st Lap - 1st session (& I was car 4), someone who had gone out of the pits too hard too soon, span all over the place at Lodge, right in front of me In avoiding them, I also went off

Having set myself up for the day, I was dismayed to find 2 more scoobs pirouetting before me at Lodge. That made 2 in the first hour & 1 just after lunch!

Someone out to get me????

 

after being therte today and seeing the car brought in on the trailer, can i just say that no matter what people post about the car who wern't there 2day!
no-one like to see ANY car get smashed on a track day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when they winched it on the trailer there seemed to be a 'quite silence' around the pit area/car park!!!!!!!!!!!!!

or was it just me that sensed it???????

I was in the Black Lotus Exige (passenger) when it span there.. SCARY spiders. I was surprised we actually stopped on the track and not in the tyre wall.

Just you methinks.

If you look at the closeups of the pictures (top) many people are smiling and pointing.

If it were owned by a person (not company) then I think perhaps the air would have been more sombre (the fact that it was a fancy MY01 just made people giggle more) - all this was once people found that everyone was safe.

 

Everything went quite whilst the car was still "on" the circuit and the Doctor's had gone screaming off. I was talking to a few folks on the pit wall and somebody else (can't remember who) commented how quite the people in the pit lane were.

Rubber necking of any sort is totally inappropriate and distasteful and I agree with the comments made.

I think the laughing and joking at Oulton was after we had the news that everyone was OK, a bit of relief I think. While they were in the car the Pit Lane and Paddock was a near total silence.

I think some of the previous comments about people's interest in the damagd MY01 were a bit strong.

By the time the car appeared in the paddock, the news had spread that the occupants were more or less ok.

The crowd consisted of spectators and drivers and all were genuinely relieved to hear the good news, as they were interested in how the car stood up to the punishment...Whatever happens, humour is a human relief-valve.

I've been involved in a big smash, which saw me getting away unscathed and thankful. You have to make jokes about such things or the reality would have you never leaving the house again!

I've also been marshalling at a hillclimb which saw a Caterham driver spin off over wet grass, career backwards into a copse of trees and the resultant impact broke his kneck - Killing him instantly.

As John mentioned earlier, and as is mentioned on all the signs. "Motorsport is dangerous". Not just for drivers, but spectators are also at risk.

Why do we do it?

Because we enjoy it...

That too, but also in awe of that fapping fast remote control car careering up and down the pit lane.

As it was understood that everyone was safe, it wasn't someones personal car, and it was an MY01.. I don't think (in this instance) it was too ghoulish to gawp at what had halted the session for an hour.

Squizz is right about humour being a relief-valve..

 

When an Ambulance overtakes me on track then a truck with a lifter on, it always concerns me. I drove past when the red flags were out on my way into the pits. I felt gutted for the people in the car. I have had a spin at about 100mph, fortunatly not hitting anyone or anything and it was very very scary let alone toppling over.

It brings it home Track days can be ended in tears. Think i may get insurance at Donnington.

Hmmm, Gary, very true!

When i had my accident, EVERYBODY went and had a look, got the cameras out, video cameras, making little comments etc etc. Makes you feel really warm inside NOT !

 

I was passenger in the car when it span at Lodge first thing in the morning. Same driver when it flipped.

Also drove it round the circuit and to me it felt like it was very easily unsettled.

Apparently there is an anti-roll bar in the roof of the MY01 which may have helped prevent a more serious outcome.

It was errily(sp?) quiet until the driver (one of Listers guys, not a customer) was brought out ok. I went past just after the accident. Not nice to see a car on its roof, and legs handing out of a side window struggling to realise occupents!!

Gary (the passenger) was in good spirits within an hour of the incident, and even complaing that they had cut his wristband off so he couldn't go out again


Great day apart from that though!! although I've never seen so many stopped sessions at any track event! More red flags than at the Italian Grand Prix!!

You are absolutely right. Rubber necking seems to be an unfortunate but common aspect of human behaviour - is it simply curiosity or a deep down perversion?

When we see rally cars on their roof then at least they have a signiifcant degree of added protection form a roll cage. This car had none of that and I think people smiling and laughing is highly inappropriate.

However, scratches and dents excepted - this is the best looking MY01 to date. Is it those 18" P1 alloys (despite being gold ) filling the arches better than the standard ones. They seem to sit wider in the arch as well .. Hmmmm

Porsche Carrera GT3 went off today at Goodwood (Hard, and a write off, in front of pitlane - everyone OK), what's that 100K's worth ?

Have to say I was quite dismayed by the 'spectators' attitudes (oooh lets go look at the damage !! har har etc)

I really hope it wasn't the same for this poor chap.

Note:- you notice it's only the spectators that have this kind of ghoulish attitude, not us guys that actually go out ourselves.

Makes me sick, it's like people rubber necking at a serious RTA bunch of mother ****ing arseholes ****ing hope it happens to them one day (as if they've got the ***** to get on track themselves)

Glad everyone was OK - at the end of the day cars can be replaced, people can't.

Gary - your comments ring very true. Having spent twenty something years marshalling at races, rallies, hillclimbs etc, it still p1sses me off how the vultures crowd round after a bad accident. Unfortunately some people see accidents as part of their days entertainment and not as the destruction of someone's pride and joy.

Floyd - I was a passenger in the Skyline during this very slide before the MY01 flipped. I absolutely **** my pants as we went round Lodge - sure it looked great from outside. Eric slid it like that on EVERY bend though, so more purposefully, than out of shape - amazing!!!

 

I would like to see everybody's attitude if they had to go and witness first hand what I had to witness yesterday ( and not for the first time either...)

The standard of driving yesterday was WAY down on usual (and I am not including the Listers car in this...), and this from people who have done a lot of days ( I know who you are, and I'll be watching...); and yet one poor chap has an off and there is the BIGGEST thread on Oulton on the internet!!!

I think everyone there was concerned for the safey + well-being of those involved in the crash.

Pictures do serve to sober the thoughts of the gung-ho drivers (not in attendance), and ram home the fact that it's a dangerous event where people can, and do get hurt or killed.

I think this is a little harsh and more than likely taken totally out of context. I doubt very much that members on this bbs would have been sniggering/laughing at the accident with total disregard for the occupants safety- rather what squizz said!

As for photographs and rubber necking...it's basic human nature that things like this intrigue people. So as annoying as it may be to those who crash, if I were in the same situation I wouldn't expect anything else, of course people will take photos! That's part of the embarrasement of an off!

As for the standard of driving being below par, rather than issuing an "I'll be watching you threat" why not take those drivers quietly aside and offer them some tuition and pointers, after all isn't that the point of the SIDC bringing along an instructor. I'm sure this would be far more effective than coming along here all outspoken hurling insults and slagging these drivers off in a public forum!!

Rob, Its inevitable that the roll of the listers car is going to have a huge response from people, it’s the first time that most people will have seen a damaged MY01 and people are curious about how it stands up.

I have spent the whole of my adult life around race and rally cars; I have been in some pretty large crashes in the forests, including a roll at above 80MPH that left the entire car totalled. I have also worked on the rescue crews and have helped cut apart some seriously destroyed cars. You always get people wanting to take a look; it’s human nature. Personally, I never get involved or go look at the car unless I am there in some capacity that requires that, because I cant stand the sight of destroyed cars, I know the efforts required to run these things.

I wanted to see a picky of the car on its roof so that I could see where it went off, just to confirm and improve my knowledge of the circuit and how it catches people out.

I don’t think your comments about watching people next time are helpful at all though. If you have a problem with someone’s driving then you should go see them on the day or at least contact them in person. If I were driving in a manner you consider inappropriate then I want to know about it straight away.

Whilst I was on track I only had an issue with one driver in a Subaru, who obviously hadn’t listened at the briefing about being overtaken. I waited 3 straights behind this car trying to get him to move over, in the end I gave up and passed him down the inside on the exit of druids. I never do that, but this guy obviously thought he should stay to the left. I would have had a word but I forget his reg # by the time I came in.

I was one of those who came up to you to see how the driver and passenger were, the mood in the pits during the not knowing stage was very sombre (apart from a few), the vast majority us had genuine concern.

Once I knew all was OK myself and the other Notts lads went over to the damage car and yes I did take some pictures. It would have been totally different if someone had been hurt.
I work in heavy industry and been in too many situations were people are trapped and have been seriously injured to make light of such matters, a friend of mine lost his foot and use of an arm in an accident last year and another colleague suffered a broken back and is permanently disabled.

I do agree that the standard of driving was a lot poorer than Donnington a couple of weeks ago, even standing on the pit wall you could see who was guilty of not moving over.

Is this the official way of handling such a situation ? The Subaru guy may have been ignorant, but he wasn't dangerous (the overtake on the left rule is for safety, right?) - Two wrongs don't make a right and all that.

Would it not have been better to pull into the pits for half a lap ? After all, it's not a race.

But John's done more track days than I've had breakfasts, so I may be missing something here.

The official way of handling this is to report the guy to the race control official so they can have a word.

I had intended on doing that but i forgot his #.

i waited for a long time, it was totally obvious he had his left and right mixed up, he even had his left indicator on yet he didnt get any hints from me, so i made a decision to pass where it was safe. I know he had seen me due to his indicators being on.

It is very easy for me to pass guys like this, it takes barely a second for me to be clear, if i were in a normal car then that would be a different story.

If i thought there were any risk to me at all in doing this then i wouldnt have done it, i am very carefull about passing cars as a crash in my westfield would probably see me in hospital.

I cant recall ever passing a car like this before, but the circumstances made it safe IMHO.

PS. If i did pull into the pits for 1/2 a lap i would have caught him back up in 1 more lap, he was pants!
