Another issue John - the urls for the bbs require the square brackets and URL and will not be hyperlinks unless these are included - so emails to you will have to contain these.

How about this as my initial contribution? Please click edit to see how the links have been tidied up. I have also sent this as a .txt file to John Felstead. It required a few edits to sort out line lengths from notepad.

1. DAWES FAQ

The Dawes manual boost controller is a ball-spring device which costs about £35 in the UK and can give decent improvements in performance. It can be fitted in minutes with no tools required except maybe scissors. The main benefits are dramatic improvements in turbo spool up time, as well as a wider boost and torque curve - the effects of this can be quite considerable. However, if you push it too far so could the safety implications - if you are foolish you could lose your engine. In fitting any performance device to your car you should know what you are doing and if in any doubt consult a professional.

Documented experience on Scoobynet seems greatest with the MY99/00 UK models, and up to fuel cut (approx 17 PSI) most cars seem to cope well with fuelling and timing, although data in track conditions has not been collected. A boost gauge and air fuel ratio meter should be considered ESSENTIAL when fitting a Dawes. EDIT April 2003 - following further work, I think a knocklink with sensor whilst more expensive at £140 is now considered a better choice than an air fuel ratio meter. You need to also consider fuel cut, compressor efficiency, intercooler efficiency, charge temperatures, injector duty cycle, knock and exhaust gas temperatures. Bear in mind also that on part throttle there can be excessive boost on part throttle on cars with small turbos (MY98 on) which can affect driveability, control on bends, as well as cause lean running of your engine with potentially serious conequences.

Despite these issues, you will see from the threads below that many have worked ways around these limitations and are using the devices safely. Scoobynet, myself, Dawes suppliers or any of the posters in the below links/threads will not be liable for any personal injury or engine damage caused by any of your modifications.

In the absense of a search facility, this would certainly help reduce net traffic and help cut the noise level down. Not sure it the advertisers would like the first bit though.

The number of visits to the pages wont drop, just the number of reposted questions i would imagine.

Who knows, maybe the info will actually increase the number of posts with people wanting to get more in depth?

The reason i wanted to do it in this style is so that old threads that have died but had great info, may actually get kicked back into life. It's a better way of doing it than a staic FAQ as you guys can continue to shape it and add to it when new ideas apear.

good idea.... I'd like to see a 'tuning FAQ' for UK and Jap cars as there seems to be a degree of confusion about what you can do to what car etc, perhaps a product reviews and experiences (in some kind of FAQ format) would be really cool.

How will you "vet" the threads used?

More specifically, how will you deal with threads that contain 90% excellent advice and 10% questionable advice?

An otherwise excellent thread containing genuinely sound information or useful owners experience might contain a post or two with dodgy advice which spoil the threads overall value.

Does the thread in question get left out, is it included with some sort of disclaimer or are Scoobynet users advised to treat all advice on the BBS with care?

Seems a bit obvious now that I put it that way, but hopefully you get my point...

Excellent idea, as I get the impression that several topics are covered over and over again. Therefore some of the guys that have been using this site for a while and know the answer to questions just don't bother because they've covered it before.

good input guys. All being well i will have something up on sunday *john puts presure on himself*

Keep giving me ideas and questions, the more you say the more likely we get this right.

I think on the dodgy info question i will have to look at it on a thread by thread basis, what i dont want to do is modify the threads as dodgy info is usually corected. I wont let a thread end with something wrong though, or at least i will do my best to ensure that. The threads will be left open so they will be able to continue to grow.

Of course, at the end of the day this info is supplied as guidance and it's at your own risk if you choose to follow it. I wont be waranting your mods. LOL

I'm sure what I have to say will be of interest to you guys because I am a relitively new member.

I have posted a few questions on here and each time I have posted I've gone into the search area to find any previous posts, found it not working so I will usually have a scan through the last three or four pages before giving up and posting my question.

I have recently posted a question called "boost increase" I have since found out from reading this thread that what I was refering to was this Dawes Device.

So I guess what I'm saying is that.. if the search engine was working there would be no need to go to all this trouble. As I would have found what I was looking for and not posted my question.

I can't see what the problem is with the serch engine but I may be able to help out if you could put me in touch with the right person (I'm a web designer).

No, absolutely not. I think its a terrible idea.

I have one reason for this.

I ahve built up a lot of knowledge in asnwering the very easy questions that are repeated again and again. If you remove the only threads that I have the knowledge to answer then people will see me for the fraud I really am, thus destroying the pseudo repspect I have misled people into thinking I deserve.

If you take this from me, there will be nothign left and I will shrivel up and die, unloved.

Aside from that I think it is a great idea.
