AYC does to some extent drive the car for you.
I am fortunate/unfortunate enough to have my best mate own an E6 tuned to a sniff over 400 brake, my classic is at 430bhp and I am fortunate enough to have driven them in absolute anger back to back.
When the evo looks like its going to go horribly wrong and I was getting twitchy and wanting to correct it, I was told to keep my foot in and low and behold the diff did its thing and the car came out of the corner straight.
What part of that was driver skill, more like just having the cohones to keep it planted.
AYC is a hinderence when it brakes and cost Łooo's to put right, unless you go to Roger Rally and swap a duff AYC for a working RS and a few sheckles.
Doesn't drive the car for you HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA etc
And to answer the question: the Evo is the more capable car until fairly heavily tuned

Generally accross the range and age the Evo is quicker out the box as standard, and again once the mods begin, you can extract more from an EVO than a scoob pound for pound, until you get into sill mod's territory.
Both drive themself to a degree, but the EVO again wins and driven on a road in absolute anger I would sooner put my faith in an EVO - AYC is truly fantastic if you have every experienced it.
Interior on the EVO across the range is nicer and less dated - but that's IMO.
Evo is far less common than the scoob and has a little less Chav image than the scoob - again IMO please don't flame me.
Scoobs' are easier to live with as a day to day drive. And classic's are still the best looking well proportioned car out of all of them.
I have Had both of varying ages and models over the years, and there is no winner between the 2 - Both simlar but both different. These days I would sooner have german again but thats a different thread- lol.

Before buying a V4 Type R, i drove and researched quite a few Imprezas and Evos. I love the Evo, it is a fantastic car, but found that it needed more driver commitment, the handling was always on the edge which is great on a track, but streets and roads it to me felt a little lethal...the Scooby, did it all pretty much just as fast without dramatics and levels of grip id say where even better (in the Type R anyway despite the one i bought having the pikiest tyres ever!)...I love both cars, but went withe the impreza and am happy so far (despite problems with the company that sold it to me)..and the mivec service costs are rather horrific! 6 month services for everyday use????

i think the other way around. scoob inside esp on early modles is better

Agreed. but with the drop in cost in evo's they are catching up.

Sound
Heritage/always wanted
Both are amazing cars, and both will put a big smile on your face. On a track the difference will be more the driver than the car. unless you are both pro racing drivers?
Also it seems Evo drivers have an "evo are better" attitude for no apparent reason. Scoob drivers seem to think. hey, both are good. Personal opinion. (not that im including you RobEvo5 in that). Evo drives seem to talk like a scoob is a 1.1 fiesta..?

Evo - better for the track, more focused
Scoob - Better for everyday
Both are good, but Evos are more expensive to buy and run. I recently sold my Evo VII for Ł10,000 and bout my MY99 Classic wagon for Ł2,200 the evo was about 340hp and the Wagon 250hp, they are both bloody quick but im sure with cheaper insurance less servcing and all that spare cash I could pretty easily produce a similar performing 350hp car fairly easily. Basically if your minted you generally get an Evo, if not its the Scooby, although the sound is a factor with the Wagon, the magnez exhaust makes the burble sound lovely. Horses for courses really, I loved them both and would love to get a Evo VI Tommy Mak in the future.
P.s. the guy who drove his scoob and the Evo VI commenting on the AYC, idthought the AYC only started frorm the VII. The Evo is much more sure footed though generally, Wagon much more twitchy but then i like that, sometimes anyway.

My Ex had an Evo5 GSR and as such i was dragged along to a fair few MLR meets and events. 'Scooby' is a swear word in that neck of the woods, they seem to be very elitist. Yes, an EVO is rarer and costs more... but does that make it better?!
Pound for Pound, out the box, yes, the EVO is better, thats obvious and quite honestly i would bloody well hope so, it would have cost me Ł5000 to get an equivalent Evo 5/6 over my UK Classic... But put that Ł5000 back into the Scoob to give it a FAIR comparison, and its gonna be a Scoob any day of the week, straight line, corners, wet&dry, looks wise, insurance costs... easy win!!!
Again, just my opinion

A diverse point that is never mentioned in comparisons, but one of the big reasons I swayed towards Scoobys, as well as running costs offcourse is:
In various crash tests in USA & Japan the newage scoobys performed far better than the Lancers of similar year. Results showed that the Subaru B pillar was exceptionally strong as well as A pillar also. They Scoobys recived far greater scores also for driver & passenger injuries & overall receieved a higher star/percentage rating than Lancers.

When ever this debate arises you always hear the comment "scoobys are common"
Try telling that to the "50" scoobs that made the Dorset Scoobys March monthly meet!.....and that's just down here in our little county of Dorset.
So for me its not just about the car is about the community and what comes with it.

So if we start with evo v STI....
Evo3 v STI v3, scoob is the better car.
Evo4 v STI v4 evo is the better car
Evo5 v STI v5 evo is the better car
Evo6 v STI v6 evo is the better car
Evo7 v Bug JDM STI, evo is the better car
Evo8 v Blob JDM STI, scoob is the better car
Evo9 v Hawk JDM, scoob is the better car
Evo10 v STI Hatch, STI is the better car
There is never much in it between these cars, but since around 2003 the subaru has been the better all rounder, ie on track and on the road, this does not include any UK car(s), just Japanese domestic market vehicles.

What I'm going to say has pretty much been mentioned in one post or another, but hey its not going to hurt is it??
I am lucky enough to have owned both a year or so back; after having the scoob for 3 years i fancied a change and an Evo 6 (TME) was the only car i fancied instead of it, but never having driven one before; well only on a test drive when i wasn't impressed! so found it hard to sell up just in case i regretted my decision..
Later that year I imported an Evo 6 (TME) and had them both so i could decide. I found the Evo very disappointing still as it didn't feel that quick; the cars were running the same sort of power and i never got that kick in the back like i did in the scooby and i really missed it. The handling really shocked me as well; always heard that the "ayc" does it all for you and took that for granted, but i had that car all over the place and had to change my driving style to get the best out of it, pushing that little harder when instinctively you want to let off takes a bit of getting used to and feels very strange when you feel it pulling you back in or keeping you on the correct line.
After a serious clean and the addition of a hard-pipe kit and induction kit i found that the boost controller was unplugged (probably done during sva), and boy what a change when it was turned on - a totally different animal and i loved it, and although i missed the scoobs burble the Evo still sounded nice with a full 3" system and now had that feeling of speed and that hit in the back i missed so much, b ut i did find the addition of 2 doors very strange![Lol1](images/smilies/lol1.gif)
A few months went by and the Evo didn't fail to gets looks and i was really enjoying it, but it was now the time to make my mind up and............... well the scooby won (woo hoo). I just preferred the handling characteristics on the type r and found the dash hard to live with in the Evo (looking rather plastic and dated now) and i also felt very high up compared to the impreza. I was lucky enough to have the Evo for a further 6 months whilst i had some work done on the scoob and during this time i did really grow to like it more and more, but when i got the Type r back i realised that the decision i made was the right one for me.
They are compared to all the time, but they really are different cars and both have plus points and negatives also. The Evo wasn't any more expensive to run and only the ayc was the pain and dealer required element. They are far from hard to work on and i can do the same basic servicing and maintenance on either car without any probs, if anything it was probably easier on the misti.
The Evo is a stunning looking car and still the best shape to date in my mind (X still thinking on!) and they do offer better performance per pound compared to my V4 type r, but they do tend to be slightly more expensive initially.
I totally disagree with the "common" comment, i would say "popular" and that is for a reason, they are pretty cheap and a lot of car for the money especially the V3 type ra's right now, a great handling little car, with good power and great potential with a few subtle mods.
I'm not trying to say that one is better than the other, just that the Subaru was better for me and that i preferred it. Its very hard to get a real opinion as most on this site are going to be for the Subaru where as on the MLR it will be the opposite, the only way to really tell is by driving them yourself so you can make your own mind up as everyone wants something different.

everyone seems to be saying evo better out of the box .
but every head to head i have seen where equil power factory scoobs and evos race against each other the scoobs win.
these are newage on cars not looked at classics

I was tempted to buy an EVO8 instead of my current car but I didn't. There is no advantage out of the box of an evo8 compared to my JDM STI. Also I knew I was going to go for a little more than standard power and I would of had to spend just as much cash on the EVO as I would my STI. The last 2 TOTB the imprezas have won over the EVO's. Each car is as good as each other, its just down to your own personal preference

My old '99 320bhp classic was a great car. Very quick, handling was ok but poor brakes.
Got an Evo6 after that. Standard 280bhp. Felt very heavy till you got to the twisties then came into a league of its own. For quite a big car, it handles immensely. The brakes are good to but warp easily
I remember parking my classic next to it and it looked tiny!!
The gearing in the Evo was crap though. You always seemed to be changing plus 80mph in 5th was about 4000rpm.
Fuel cost was disasterous.
Then the AYC broke. Cost a grand.
Then I fitted a new ECU and turned the boost up to 1.5bar, 350bhp. My classic still felt quicker.
Then the bottom end went.
I have a 330bhp bugeye now with Brembos.........I'd love to meet a 350bhp Evo on the road.![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
I got slated on MLR for saying my Impreza would eat an Evo, but it would.
Impreza for an everyday car, no doubt.
Evo for weekends.
Really depends what you mean by 'best'
Best all rounder?
Best on track?
Best to run?

we are lucky enough to have both,
We have owned the Evo 7 for a year and have just purchased a Classic RA and we use them both on the road as everyday cars and on the track for real fun!! Both have good and bad points. Think its down to personal preference but we think they are both as good as each other.
