I agree with Matteeboy, the only time since I started I have bottled it is due to ice, this morning was frosty but as it wasn't wet it was fine, wonderful in fact, only trouble is the nice weather has brought the fair weather cyclists out, like the ignorant grumpy **** at work on a yellow road bike, its all he can do in the morning to say hello, always looks dead p1ssed off, stumpy little mincebag was faster than me last year but he looked like he hadnt been out all winter so I took pleasure in overtaking him with a cheery "Mornin Mate"

Dont intend to use my car at all if I can help it, its a crime to be fart in your own farts in a car on days like we have had recently, cold or not, utterly lovely, cycling through the Cheshire countryside at 7am as the sun is still rising, mist on the fields, oooo I am getting all poetic, obviously some ignorant **** will spoil it in a manky diesel Corsa Van by passing too close and emitting some stinking fumes but in the meantime its great.

Me too...dont ride it in the ice, or the rain, or the wind, or if its a bit cloudy, or if its too hot, or if the barometer on my watch says CHANGE, or if the day ends in a letter Y.

Ive lost the will to ride, how do you get back into the saddle ?

I would ride down the side of a canal on the flat towpath 28 miles round trip in 1hr 25mins, twice a week, I cant be bothered anymore, dont seem to have time.

Also I would just throw the bike in the van and do a colour route through Delamere Forrest, but as Ive said I just cant seem to get drive anymore.

I thought it maybe down to my age, but MatteeBoy seems to be doing fine at 49 so I can discount this.

Any ideas.

PS. I will never cycle to work, I have no energy at 0615 in the morning, infact I can just about muster up the effort to press the go pedal in the truck.

Yoza, you think I have any energy at that time, er, no but I know as soon as I am on the bike, have burped and farted a few times, got the blood flowing I am ok, I feel a bit grogy most mornings, but I know that if I go in the car it will stay with me longer, when I cycle, most days I feel great on getting to work, the energy is there you just need to kick it off yourself, I am 38 and feel so much better for the cycling, if you can cycle to work and dont you are missing out. Its like any exercise, if you do it you look for excuses to do it more, if its sporadic its just hard work, now is the start of the light and decent weather, make the most of it, think of what you can do in six months.

Thats all bollocks, I do it to justify eating more !

I pretty much can't do weights or run in the mornings - just can't get awake enough. But for some reason cycling and/or surfing are both fine. In fact if I don't cycle in the mornings, I struggle later in the day.

In my defence I have to pick the commutes now - my right knee is getting worse and I have a feeling that surgery is in my near future

The pain on the way back really puts a damper on the day and my enthusiasm is waning. However I have the bike and all the kit ready to go for tomorrow, so here's hoping.

Hmmm not so good Kieran

The blessing is that if you do have surgery then cycling is guaranteed to be something the physio will recommed you do alot of to strenghten ligaments.

However, hope you don't end up needing surgery though

Kieran - what's the problem with your knee?
Specialized Body Geometry shoes are very good - slight tilted outwards and so less pressure on the knee. I have a slightly iffy knee from a flattish right foot (so it has destablised my knee - the inside ligaments and muscles) and use a shoe insert for running and the like but find cycling okay for it. Maybe try these shoes? They look decent too! I have also done near obessive physio on it which has worked wonders.

I have a weird lump at the top of the Tibia (shinbone) which almost looks like a growth (been to the doctors and the x-ray says it's perfectly okay, so I got treated like I was making stuff up)

If I cycle more than approximately 16 miles the joint below the knee gets EXTREMELY painful. It's a very sharp pain every time I apply pressure to it. The knee is constantly reminding me of this issue now, and I can feel a stiffness all the time.

I can't kneel directly on the knee due to this lump, so it makes thing awkward. Walking is okay, but when I came down from Snowdon at New Year my leg was in agony and started to spasm slightly.

It was a good thing we had no further to go. I put that down to poor surface conditions as it was much better once on the pavement.

If you bend your legs slightly when sat down, you'll feel the tendons running from the knee to the tibia... they indent slighty, my left leg has a small indent but the right one goes in over half an inch - almost like it is hollow.

I wear proper cycling shoes with a barely flexible base - before I got these I could only manage 6 miles before the pain started.

And your doc says it's fine?!!! Doesn't sound fine to me. Second opinion needed?
Ever bust your leg? Sounds a bit like excessive cartilidge to me - often from an ex injury that has "over-healed". I'd think you need an op to slice out the offending bit. The hollow might be from underworked muscle from it being knackered - I have less muscle on my dodgy knee as the leg has been "cheating" over the years.

Flippin eck - it's an SR71 stealth bike!

Did a 10km coast run today then went for an MTB blast. Hit something (maybe an unseen tree stump?!), smacked off a tree, bent my front wheel, snapped some spokes and made the handlebars go very wonky. Also smashed my ankle and knee - couldn't walk on them for a while but regained feeling so nothing broken. Quite funny though but was on my own miles from anywhere so did mildly panic for a bit.

All good fun though!

I have to admit I was wondering what the FCN was for that bike.

Oh God. I just got all cycle geeky then!

Glad you are ok !

That worries me, I probably mentioned the one where I hit a piece of wire fence, went over the bars and got my jogging bottoms caught on the levers/shifters, it hurt but the worst bit was hangin upside down with my **** on display, luckily managed to extricate myself.

Shamelessly copied from my post on Bike Radar 'cos this was just funny on the way in this morning:

I'm nursing my right knee at the moment so I pick and choose the commutes and with a stonking tail wind today I had to cycle in.

I got a personal best for a commute in of 50 minutes (natch) and was actually tail gating a car at one point (for 1/2 mile!) so whatever fuel was in the system (Alpen) was clearly working.

On the second to last stretch there's a flat 1/2 mile section running alongside the A52 and I come up behind a guy on a slicked out MTB while he was waiting to pull out. As he pulled out he shoulder checked, saw me and CLEARLY put the pedal down.

Well what could I do? I had to give chase.

I catch up to him fairly quickly as he's had to slow for a car pulling right (naturally the car takes position on the LEFT of the lane ) and we pull off... I tail him for a 50 yards, check the gear, step up one, shoulder check (clear) and pull out.

Now please note (and why this is so good) he was REALLY trying to get away from me, and as I pull alongside, I glance across to deliver a cheery "Good Morning!" with a winning smile and the guy has his chin in his hand, looking for all the world like he has no idea I'm there and he's just out for a morning stroll

Naturally I keep the power on and pull steadily away and when I get to the end of the stretch I glance back and he's WAY WAY back and pootling.

It's always nice to play the game and KNOW someone tried and failed. Especially for me, 'cos basically I'm crap!

At home today, my first sickie in five years, youngest was being a problem going to bed on Friday and I think lifting him trapped a nerve, he is getting quite big now and my old techniques don't work, gone are the days when I could give one a piggyback and carry the other two by their belts anyway, shooting pain when I lift him which made me swear, he scuttled off pretty quick but it has left me with a twinge in the back which has subsided but a combination of that and the neighbours (who live in France) alarm going off all night due to the wind conspired to leave me fooked, so a sickie, didnt fancy the 40 mph wind anyway.

I'm watching trees bending double and the lamp post outside the window wobbling, so there is no way I'm cycling the 14+ miles home tonight. It's straight into it. I'll be sobbing by the time i get to my village.

Train it is. Then it's a 2 minute bike ride from the station
