power at the crank needs to pass through the transmission system to get to the wheels.
This transmission system saps some of this power, these are called transmission losses.
4wd or Awd saps a lot more of this power than Fwd or Rwd, typically some quote about 24%.
So a scoob only has 3/4 say of it power at the wheels, an Alfa may only have 10% transmission loss so 90% of its power at the flywheel is tranmistted to the road.

Whp lesson 101

Indeed...the 2001 would need a standing (not rolling) start and a wee bit of wetness.... but rolling on a warmish day...hmmm... he'll be needing 50bhp more to make an impression..

I had a little dice with a scooby in a transit van, it was quite amusing, saw him coming up on the inside round the roundabout had exactly the right gear and nailed it, watched him change down to 4th realise that wasnt enough so he took it down to 3rd and managed to get passed, just. The ace card was we had just fitted a 3.0 V6 Alfa Romeo engine in the transit, that surprised him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was an old BT van in grey as well he must have been very confused, I could just imagine what he said to his mates down the pub
The Alfa engined transit does/did exist, built by an Alfa specialist near me, don't know how much an empty transit would weigh but I do know that that engine could quite easily have been 220-230bhp with no turbo lag so possibly not quite as ridiculous as you might imagine

I'd just like to point out that all of these car owners seemed to be amazed when they beat or give an impreza a run for it's money, then they go on to slag them all off. If they are nothing special then why rave about it?

Jeremy clarkson says you aren't a true petrol head until you have owned an alfa romeo, i say you aren't a true petrol head in this day an age until you have owned a car from the playstation era. Long live loud engines, radical styling and big spoilers

I frequent two main forums,

Here - 'cos I'm sad and hungover about not owning a Scoob
&
The 205 GTi drivers forum.

Never in my time on there has there been a derogatory comment about Scoobs in general. Yeah maybe a comment about a Barry'd up car or some **** driving like such, but nothing like the pathetic generalisation across on other forums (the Alfa one being a prime example).

I was tempted to look at swapping the 205 for an Alfa, but after seeing what the arrogant ***** over there think like and reading about the unreliability - think I'll stick with what I have until ££ mean I'm back into a pair of tatty Jap trainers

You won't see a lot of pug owners slagging off scoobs because a lot of scoob owners were ex pug owners.

Not to mention they're both fun to drive anyway.

Here, here. I certainly know my car is renowned for failing electrics, and being a French bucket, but I take it with a pinch of salt, as those who have never tried driving one are simply missing out.

Me and a fellow Scoobynetter met up yesterday for a couple of quiet beers, and agreed that after selling the Scoob (within my budget) I wouldn't get the same fun from any other car, apart from maybe an Ibiza Cupra or Saxo VTS.

I let people make whatever comments they like, whether I'm in a nicely kept Impreza or my 21 year old French shoe

Last week i got my windowscreen replaced, the replacement leaked and water got into my interior lights, flicked the interior light off one night and all my windows starting going haywire. Pain in the **** for 3days afterwards

Yeah the pug owners club and ffoc both really good crowds with geniune petrol heads.

I would also defend the alpha club saying its probably a minimum of owners who do that sort of thing. And im sure there are similar threads on here about 911's as previously mentioned.

I guess we should be flattered that the scoob is still THE benchmark of a fast car. Above that the 911

'Really appreciate that point to point the top end Scoobys and Evo's are the fastest thing this side of a 911 Turbo. They just leave me cold though, I've no desire to own one at all.
Did they have a show just for subarus and not allow anybody else in ??
How retarded is that ?
I thought most car shows had a good mixture of different sorts of cars ?
Dont know much about Subarus but from what I've heard they need a complete engine rebuild every 60,000 miles or so. Maybe thats why the owners all cling together in groups discussing engine rebuilds.
Some of them are offensively loud. There's one down the road from me, it sounds like an old Beetle it's that unsilenced

That made my night, that little lot

Wife as got a company car Alfa GT
Must admit next to my wrx it makes me look like a complete tool with looks and styling.

She loved it more than the audi tt she had.

Only recently bought my wrx as shown on earlier posts asking for advice

Wife drove the wrx at weekend and now hates the alfa for the power and handling and her`s also as the q2 and all other silly gadgets on it also.

had it just short of a year and in that year been in the garage 5 times enough said

That was quite amusing.
The highlight for me is alfa owners questioning the reliability of subaru engines

"Dont know much about Subarus but from what I've heard they need a complete engine rebuild every 60,000 miles or so"

Well at least they dont brake down every 600 miles.

Look on the bright side, even if the Alfa is quicker, the Subaru will overtake him whilst the Alfa is back to the main agent for the 30th time with electrical problems (that the main agent can't fix !).

As an alternative, the Subaru owner could just hang around for ten minutes until the Alfa has depreciated by 90%, buy it for the price of a packet of crisps and then bang on endlessly about 'Italian styling', 'racing pedigree', 'full of character', 'a car with a soul' etc, until everyone else gets bored ?

Is anyone really bothered if someone slags there scooby off? its a school playground attitude.

i could have bought an Alfa when I bought he scooby, or an evo, or whatever but I didnt, mainly because the right scoob came along at the right time

any car forum you care to go on will slag off evos and subarus, they were for a long time the performance benchmark for a saloon car, only spending twice the cash on something german would have got you close but those days are gone

but ALOT of car enthusiasts and tuners of various cars will still consider themselves quick if they beat a subaru, wether its a 500BHP monster or a UK spec turbo and wether the driver was actually racing or not

its our lot in life as subaru owners

and I relish it, specially that 1 litre saxo driver who got more and more annoyed at me as I wouldnt go any faster than 5mph under the limit on the way home this evening

as for reliabilty, my subarus the only car ive ever had that HASNT broken down, they have a bad reputation due to ***** who buy them and think they can drive them at full tilt 24/7, not service them properly then whinge when they break, look after a scoob properly and itll look after you, simple as that

but you all knew that!!

i totally agree on that one bud. my bros mate claims he had 450bhp on his wrx classic nothing set up properly thrashed it around and guess what it went bang . i'm on my second scoob in 6 years and no probs touch wood ! if you look after them they will look after you imo.

To be honest that's a un fair statement, when i had my old RB5 i did 11k in the first year and changed the oil every 3k and kept to the service schedual of one every 6 months, then got a second car and only did an average of 3k a year for 2 years but in that time the big ends failed, yes i did give it some beans some of the time but not always.
And that wasn't down to driving like a **** 24/7 and poor servicing, you've got to admit there was/is a problem with big end failure with the classic's even subaru are aware of this.

Hello Subaru Owners,

Just popped in from the Alfa side of things to say a couple of words, not sure how the thread over there got so out of hand but I think you've been well and truly Trolled.

Banter is all good and well but the insults that were flying over there aren't a normal thing and if you follow the thread there was a particular protagonist.

Like I said earlier in the thread I have a mate I work with (if he still is a mate after this) who has a Subaru Impreza WRX STi PPP Type UK, I've ribbed him about it being plug ugly at work but at the end of the day it's a personal decision and I wouldn't begrudge anyone that.

I think most of you will agree when I say that unfortunately Subaru's success and accessibility has been its downfall in the arena of public perception. It was me that said most Subaru's seem to have been bought to tune and chav up and in my experience it's true, the amount of cars I see with 6" wide exhausts booming past our work building so loud you can't hear the flat four at all is unreal.

Jetpowered's is about the only one I've seen that isn't chavved up in a long time, and I'm not counting the pink stickers as I know they aren't his fault

Anyhow don;t really know where I'm going with this, sorta a olive branch thingy but think with some members we are way beyond that.

Cheers and drive safe

GD

The guys over there are right in says my ***** is bigger than yours, tbh im kind of ashamed of what's going on over there and alfa red should know better but you are right there is a lot of trolling from your side going on, i was going to post a comment when i saw what eddiegta posted and i pretty much agree.

Btw what model alfa was the one tg tested not long ago, it sounded gorgeous but said it handled like a pig for it, still i would be one of the cars in my dream garage.

What are they like for rust and electrics nowadays anyway, are they similar to lancias, brother had a tubo and it was most fun bar the numerour electrical faults it had, can't blame alfa/lancia for that though that's always been the way with anything italian.

Yes we all probably modify our cars but one things for sure we don't chav them up. In fact most folk on here hate the chav look.

We are more interested in whats under the bonnet and how the car handles and stops. Not seen too many Alfas at Knockhill and other track days, kind of says it all.

Thanks for the olive branch but stick to polishing and taking your cars to the dealers to get fixed and we'll stick to having fun and learning how to drive our cars fast on track and not traffic light grand prixs

Hi,

just a quick word to clarify my involvement in said thread on alfaowner.com.

its quite fair to say things got out of hand, and although i dont believe i offended anyone, i do feel things ran rather out of control - its worth noting this was definitely not one sided.

as i mentioned on the alfa owner thread, one common thing about both Alfa Romeo and Subaru is their owners tend to be very passionate and dedicated, and both will stand and fight their corner furiously, combine the two sides and its inevitable sparks will fly.

yes, Alfa Romeo make some quick cars, and yes, subaru make fast cars too. There is of course some ground where the two cross over, to imply that being in any subaru of any means you will be able to out accelerate any alfa romeo is a pointless and childish as the "my ***** is bigger than your *****" rubbish the thread descended to. the majority of subarus are quicker than the majority of Alfas, but the same can be said that the majority of sports bikes are quicker then the majority of subarus - the whole comparison of two vehicles that aren't aimed at the same market is rather confusing.

so the net outcome? we all looked bad, and visitors to either forum would have got the wrong impression about all of us. Is that what we wanted? i know i didn't

Phil.
