Do the police fine you, points, or just give you 7 days to get it sorted with an mot stations approval?
your spot on, the mot is just an annual certification to ensure the car is being maintained safely, the rest of the year it is the driver/owners responsibility to ensure the car is road worthy.

so therefore lets say you have a de-cat and god forbid you have an accident, if the police or insurance inspector spot anything on the car that is outside of VOSA regulations or not declared on your policy then game over they wont pay out.

as far as points go if you get a particularly nasty policeman you could get 3 points for every for each and every infringement on the car.

all i can say is don't risk it and learn the hard way.

A decat on it's own will release more power but because you have majorly changed the flow characteristics both in & out of the engine a remap is advisable to protect the engine.

This will also release far more power than can be obtained by merely bolting on a few random bits of pipe.

I should have explain why I asked Wiley, I'm running a wrx at circa 330/340bhp with a sports cat downpipe, wileys car is similar (bit more power) and he has recently changed from a sports cat to a full decat downpipe and I just wondered what differnce/improvement he noticed, I know that to get full improvement I need a remap on top of bolt ons ..........

to be totally honest, it doesnt feel much different from the sports cat and the decat. i'm running a bit more boost from 1.4 to 1.6 bar after i had my mapped tweaked. only thing thats different is the noise(sounds more whistley and louder) and the flames which i didnt get with the sports cat
