You'd be amazed at the things that people can get away with claiming is offensive and even making a financial gain from it.

If that daft joke had been posted here the Mods would have issued an infraction as they are uber PC, You wanna see some of the jokes on some of the American message boards or Sickipedia, they are enough to give our overly PC Mods a heart attack!

I didn't find that funny at all but that's because it was a **** joke and besides he has made me laugh so much from his del boy days I don't really care.

I have grown up being accustomed to the P word being used in an offensive manner and had the beatings that go along with it but I like to think we live in an age where it's taken in humour.

It doesn't help when the media ****** spam us with the news making a big ****ing deal out of it... racism is bubbling away under the surface, even more now than ever with the state of the country causing people to vent their anger behind closed doors but life is too short to be all P effing C about it... init

FZ, I see where you are coming from. Personally I didn't find the joke that funny, but I could tell it was a joke.

I honestly think either nobody picked up on it, or saw it for what it was. The problem for me, is that some people now seem to struggle with telling the difference between a joke, and an offensive coment, and at least some of the time, if not most, comments that don't actually offend the people, some people out there are so quick to defend.

I have no time for racism, or any type of personal attack that generalises and causes offence, but I can tell the difference between fun and offence still.

Basically as someone in the public eye you are better off steering clear of anything someone or some section of society could kick off about. In this case it is someone cracking a joke who is "of a certain age" where this kind of thing was not deemed offensive. Its kind of naive though to assume that this is the case now and he should have realised that before opening his gob.

He's issued an apology, its intention was not malicious and he is a great actor and made a mistake in the heat of a moment. Can't see what else there is to say about it really. In terms of what is happening in the world it should be way down the list. There are plenty of other things to get more upset over.

If he'd told a joke like...

A man walks in to a bar with a Tiger and asks the barman' Do you serve Pakis?'

The barman replies ' Of course we do, We're not racist!'

Well give me a pint of lager and a paki for the Tiger!

A joke like that could be described as racist! And it's bad, almost as bad as a bad thing on a bad day!

There is no place for racism these days and I think delboy should be shot for his insane joke, be head the infadel!!

How can it be racist when it IS indeed a fact? Tigers do eat pakis.

I like the fact that 'no-one complained' to the show yet they felt the need to apologise

Jesus, if I had to go out into the street everytime I made some comment or bad joke in the house, I would be homeless by now

It is getting ridiculous now - I really cant see any pakistani or indian actually being offended by that joke or thinking it is racist ! - however, I can see a white, right on lesbian council worker 'pretending' to be offended because they somehow feel they should be, and it makes them a better person because of it.

Its like a lot of these things that get banned or removed, someone worries that it 'may' offend some minority, so they get up in arms about it.

Personally I find humour that takes a dig at national and cultural peculiarities ( black, white, english, french, indian whatever... ) funny, and not offensive or racist.

There are plenty of black comedians who make jokes about blacks, and there are indian ones who make jokes about their own culture - which begs the question do you have to be a different race to be racist ? or it is irrelevant as it isnt racism in the first place as an innocent joke is a long way from racial hatred ?

Jim Davison's joke on TV

"What does Black bloke say when he crosses a zebra crossing..? Now you see me, now you don't"

Branded a racist and offensive and banned from the TV for ages.

Eddie Murphy's joke - again televised

"What does a white dude say when he crosses the road...? now you see me, now you don't"

Reviewed as brilliant, fanatstic comedian who is really breaking down barriers - have a million pounds.

It PC gone mad......

Another thing.

Isn't Mahatma a generic name. As in Ghandi's name was not Mahatma, its merely a name given when famous which means "graet person".

Saw it on QI so it must be right

Speaking live on air on Tuesday, Sir David said: "What do you call a Pakistani cloakroom attendant?"

After a pause, he said: "Mahatma coat."

Fecking hell!

Oh the irony!

it is funny as hell! Whoever thinks it's racist racist, is a blunthead.

I am Indian ( born Hindu) from Mahatma's () country. I am sure he would have experienced a laughter cyclone in his belly too, if he were alive.

There is a difference between "race-related/in relation with race" and "racist". Sadly, one dimensional bluntheads can't see it.

BTW, has anyone watched loudmouth Brazillian president talking negatively of "white men with blue eyes" yesterday, when he addressed his subjects on the occasion of Brown's visit? I thought that sounded a bit "not-so-unracist" against the whites.
What do SN bandwagoners think of that?

Dont care really, he is, in all probability bang on.

I think part of the problem here is that in certain organisations with an overlt pc culture there is a climate where if you hear something that could in any terms be possibly construed as racist you have to make a song and dance about it otherwise you are complicit and therefore subject to the same discipline the original person who said it is.

This was the case at Greater Manchester Police where I used to work, you could be dismissed for uttering the P word and dismissed if you heard it and didnt say anythign about it, we used to get on well with colleagues of all backgrounds but the management went over the top so on the way home we used to say whatever we wanted, not to actually be racist but as a pressure relief from the PC atmosphere at work, where I work now we have mutal respect and there is, as far as I can see no racism without the sword of Damocles hanging over us, I suppose it was a pendulum swinging back int he other direction fromt he Gene Hunt style days that I saw coming to an end in the nineties, there were still a few Dinosaurs roaming the force, now I suspect its been driven underground if its still there, you tend to find the officers have an opinion of the people they deal with day in day out, this is their own opinion and one they nowadays keep to themselves if its negative, it isnt obligatory to have a particular view, its a free country.

That "joke" at GMP would have you in a tribulnal quicker than you could imagine, funny though that when my Asian mate left they tried to coax him back due to his background, but not anyone white, I woudl say thats actually quite racist and I think it upset him bit.

GMP are *******, and this confirms it.

It shouldnt matter what religion or colour you are, if they try to get back someone who has left, it should be cos they were a good copper, not cos they are asian, that is racist against white people, but in this pc world, whites are the only ones who cant be offended!

God it annoys me!

My mate got done over by 3 pakis, quite badly, police found out who they were, and not a drop of racsim got thrown around, that was brushed under the carpet.

Two weeks later, he found out all 3 work in the town centre, 1 in a news agent, and 2 in the snide kebab house 3 doors down. He got them back one by one, the newsagent guy got smashed up, so did his crappy newagent that sells **** and booze to 15 year olds, the next night he fcuked over the 2 ***** that own the kebab shop with a pool cue, and knocked ones teeth out (good, they deserved it), this was at 2 in the morning.

The next day 2 plain clothes officers came round to his house and arrested him for "aggrevated racial assault", how does that work?, Oh cos the 3 pakis complained to the coppers, conviniently forgetting that they did him over 2 weeks prior, including kickiing him when he was on the ground, while shouting white mother****er etc etc.

Why was it not a racist attack when the pakis did him over, but the other way round it was a racial assault, bear in mind when he was done over it was 3 on 1, my mate got them back on on one (except for the ***** that owned the kebab shop, but thats a different story).

Who in the police force makes these decisions? Its obvioulsy not a white person or the first attack by pakis would have been racially motivated!

Its like it works against you if your white, and thats wrong!

I understand, Jacko. It does depend upon the organisation. But David Jason is an entertainer. You would think that there would be some extra room offered to him for his joke. But, even entertainers have to be so careful for what they say; even when it is just a pure joke, not nasty racism. This is ridiculous.

Police are more watchful than ever about what is going on institutionally, and with their public communication. I think they need to be, in all honesty. Secret Policeman programmes, examples where two seperate vans with PCSOs (BME in one, whites in another) were attending the incidents. Apparently, white PCSOs didn't want to travel with BME PCSOs in the same van. Now, this is racism.

It's not just Police, anyway. At least Police are now aware, and they are under pressure to straighten things out. I heard some sufferers yesterday from an educational institution in the UK with diversity statement in policy, where international students are put together in one section, not because they want to stay with the same race, but it's the organisational decision. Their accommodation is seperate to white students, and they don't get invited to organisational functions, that are supposed to be open to all. I was simply communicating to them and didn't expect to hear any of that, I instead expected them to say- " Oh, yes! We are enjoyig our time here." But they came out with their anguish in their gentle voice. They said that white students don't want to talk to them, they just walk past them; ignoring international students' attempts of communication with them. LOL all of them do speak English, may be with their own accent. Not that international students had any anger or bitterness over this, but they said that it feels horrible and degrading, but they just put up with it. It came as a shock to me that it is happening here in 21st century, what the hell ??????? Organisation is blatantly supporting discrimination, along with the hypocrisy of diversity and equality statement!!! All the way back while driving, my heart was sinking, and my eyes were wet after hearing this.

Racism and discrimination do exist, but PC obsession won't solve them. Integration and cohesion help issues like that, not silly objections on genuinely funny jokes.

But as it's Friday, the sun is half shining out of my **** I am in a cheery mood and has nothng to do with Liverpool doing so well.

I think GMP were probably in their rights to arrest you mate, unfortunately when he decided to destroy a shop and beat people up with a Pool cue he gave up the right to complain about him being assaulted and how it was handled, I can see why he would ewan tto do that regardless of their race but though I suspect it made him feel better, I would hope that they woulndt treat it as racial, its a simple case of retribution but it was ineviatable. I personally don't hate GMP or think they are Wnakers, I just think the climate got too PC and we manage where I am now to not offend each other without having diversity rammed down our throats.

GMP was, in the past a hotbed of sexism, racism and the like, it needed to change and has come on a long way, however your mate needs to use his mind first and fists second, he just left them no option.

That joke is from the Gandhi era (when it would have made sense) and yes it should be an 'Indian'.

Not really very funny, but that sums up David Jason's entire career.
