I'm so close I can see it, so I am at the good side of the water.

Seeing without actually having to be there.

I'll admit there have been the very odd occasions where I've not just laid the customers floor still it's a perk of the job and I was paid off not fired!!

Gutted mate to hear the news

First some advice : loads of great comments and good advice on here from other people who are in the same situation or know what it is like.
Do sign on mate, it is not a sign of weakness or scrounging. You are entitled to it and it will help in the short/long term in paying a few bills etc.

You could also liven up the Job Centre by posting some pictures of your ladies collection in the window

If you have the money to give yourself a breathing space, be it savings, last paycheck etc, then now is maybe the time to think about looking at what you really want in terms of a job and see if there is anything else you are good at.
Agree that if the flooring is your love and passion, then keep that as your main focus and either look for similar jobs or if you do get something else, keep that in reserve so when the industry picks back up you can slot back into it.

BTW getting laid by your missus does not count as keeping 'your hand in'

I bet you will find something soon, chin up

If you do feel like it is all over, then try to be positive

Not necessarily Tam. Why couldn't you re-train at 39, whats stopping you? Surely no mental barriers as you seem an outgoing intelligent bloke?

If you don't want to sign on the dole for pride reasons, then thats your choice. Do you have a few ££ put away for times like these to cover anything that you're not earning now? Please don't tar all doleys with the same brush, it's kinda ignorant fella. Just to add also, if you don;t go sign on for at least your NI stamp, you'll lag behind on that also. Sometimes it's best to swallow your pride like I do every other Thursday at 11.40

But, there is still help from the places like what I go to. I'm not a retard and have grey matter between my ears, but it does help. The contacts etc they can provide. Just a suggestion.

The key word here is seem.

I'm not a retard and have grey matter between my ears, but it does help.
Ah, that is where you differ. He has none and therefore it doesnt help

Sorry to hear your news Tam but as for the statement above, you need to get over it!

I got made redundant in December and had been holding off claiming, mixture of pride, not wanting the stigma and not wanting to become "a scrounger" and then I heard a piece on the radio last week and it was a couple of political type people (MPs or ministers or something) pointing out that it's not scrounging, we've been paying tax and national insurance for just this kind of situation and it's money that YOU ARE ENTITLED TO!!

There is a huge difference between people on the dole as a lifestyle choice and decent hard working people who are affected by circumstances.

I was on the dole for six months when I left school (1987) but never since so much the same boat as you but hearing these guys encouraging people to claim what they are ENTITLED to (and have been paying for through tax and NI for decades) was enough to get me to pick up the phone and start the process. I'm still claiming less per month than I paid in tax per month for the last 11 years so a couple of months (fingers crossed) of this isn't going to break the economy.
It's not a huge amount of money but I'm claiming housing benefit as well and that takes the pressure of my redundancy and savings and lets me get some training and self study materials to hopefully get a jump on the rest of the people going for the same jobs I am.

The jobcentre is a soul sucking place and some of the things you have to do are a bit offensive on the surface but the apply to everyone and you can see the type of people they're aimed at.

Seriously - claim what you're entitled to, doesn't make you any less of a person/citizen to accept help when it's there. You won't be classified as a scrounger by anyone who's opinion counts.

You should maybe have a look closer to home.

The crunch hasn't really hit Aberdeen as such just yet - maybe worth checking the ABZ market for jobs in your field before looking further afield.

Good luck.

ps Get yourself down the Job centre and get claiming - you've earnt the right to get some help.

pps Of course you'll probably find out you don't qualify for the dole - as you've been working hard all you life !

Theres 2 different types. Income based and contributions based.

I'm currently on contributions based. This lasts 6 months then I'm on my **** as everything stops - because my Mrs earns over £95 a week. This is the governments standard to live on. This includes feeding, clothing, paying utilities and a mortgage. It almost convinces you to procreate

Equal opportunities?

I'd be down the CAB and the local council and report them.

If I lost my job I honestly think I'd find a local banker and kill him.

Then get put up in HMP Hilton for 20 years.

either that or become a Pikey !!!

Sorry to hear the news Same happened to me last July. Luckily I was able to go and work with / for the hubby (that's supposed to be a positive I think!!!)

I can completely see your reasoning for not wanting to sign on, but just think how many people who have NEVER paid in are happy to claim money you have contributed!

I think the answer is 'PAY PER CLICK' on Babe of the Week - with the pervs on here you would never need to work again!!

Good Luck & chin up - these things happen for a reason - I for one have never looked back!

Tam, sign on and do it sooner rather than later, it's hard work trying to get a claim backdated. I've worked in a job centre and I've been a doley scrounger so I've seen it from both sides. Claim what you're entitled to, it's not just the money it's also about getting your stamp paid. We used to get ALL SORTS of people in claiming, not just the great unwashed. When I first moved to Yorkshire five years ago I signed on and was lucky enough to get some really good help from my jobcentre which enabled me to set up my own business. If you show willing there's a lot of help available

Next get your CV up to scratch and send it off to anyone and everyone. Reed.co.uk have an online service where you submit your CV and details online and they match you to suitable positions as do most agencies.

There are still jobs out there, I start a new one next week My business has suffered badly from the recession and as I'm now living back down south on my own I need two incomes to just be able to survive. Don't let the *******s get you down mate, fight back BTW my new job has already cost me £100 just for a blinking suit to wear for the interview But it was worth it as I got the job

Sorry to hear that, Tam. Not an uncommon news for many in this climate. As Stealth says, with your skill, you may consider to set yourself up as self-employed? Thankfully, your missus is in continued employment, so at least one steady income is coming into the house. It is going to be hard, as one wage will suddenly drop, affecting the expenditure you have been used to. But with slight adjustment, I hope your household sails through. Good luck with everything, and same to all the population in this recession climate.

Joking This one does sound tailored for you, Tam If I had your skill and experience, I would have attempted it

Cheers folks, I'll have a look in to that job spireite My heads still a little sore this morning as I ended up guttered last night Oh just realised it's afternoon teh good thing is I'm good for money for a month or so Tonight if the weather holds off I'm gonna go to the speedway and get bladdered and ogle the wee barmaid!

I'll worry about getting work again on Monday, however a pay per click on BOTW sounds like a fantastic idea to me!

Thanx again folks

Tam, Arnold Clark are always looking for good sales people, there are openings at most motorstores ie sighthill, seafield, the one at the end of the M74 & also the one in motherwell, it doesnt matter what background your from there more than happy to train the right person. With the right attitude you could make easily 50k. Motorstore sales guys are earning between 70k to 90k if they do it right. PM me for more details if you want, my mate is a GM with them.

Tam,

Sorry to hear the bad news, but as to your comments of not 'scrounging'. I've luckily never been out of work, but would much rather someone in YOUR position claimed some of the money we all pay in taxes than some looser who has been signing on for 10 years with NO INTENTION OF EVER GETTING A JOB. Sign on and get some back from what you've paid in since leaving school, thats the least YOU deserve! Good luck with finding another job soon.

Proby
