Received mine yesterday, look fantastic.

Phoned round a couple of local garages who said it was a lot of hassle to fit them...?

I thought there was a credit crunch and they would be glad of the work.

Do they not just bolt in?

Any fitting guide for new age scooby's?

set the preload on the springs first, jack up car remove wheels unbolt brake lines from front strut and sensor wire. take out the lower bolt take out, top bolt this is a camber bolt if i recall so take note were it came from so its more or less back in the same place, take the nuts off the strut top and remove fit new one and bolt back in place and set the ride height to suit. pretty much the same for the rear except need to take the floor out of the boot.

Not too sure for the new age but have started one for the classics

So my coilovers arrived yesterday after a 9 week wait and could'nt wait to fit them, So many times I have fitted stuff to my car and forgot to take pics as i went along, This time I remebered so have wrote this fitting guide which will be followed by a set up guide for road and track,

My choice of suspension is made by a company called BC which are from Taiwan, Aimed at the fast road and track market offering affordable good quality set ups. They do a range of three set ups, the first being an entry level coilover unit with adjustable platform and 32 damper settings, The second being an invertined strut which has the fluid resevoir at the top of the strut with the same adjustabilty as entry level. The third is a fully adjustable race set up which is far beyond the use on road.

I went for the RM model which Has an inverted fluid resevoir to keep fluid heat levels down giving consistant performance on track as heat transfer from the barkes can affect this. These also come standard with front pillow ball camber adjusting top mounts but also opted for rear pillow ball camber adjustment as well,
The added bonus with the BC range is an adjusable strut length, Most coilover struts when jacked up will not hold the spring tight in place and may fail the MOT, Having adjustable strut length allows you to keep the spring tight in place and also lessens droop on the front and rear wichbones minimizing body roll.

Fitting the units.

Its best to do the fronts together first and then the rears, My car has uprated anti roll bars and an antilift kit all fully polybushed so would be alot tighter than a standard set up,

1. Loosen front wheel nuts on both sides

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

2. Jack the front of the car up and place on axle stands, Be carefull not to put axle stands on the wishbones otherwise the arms will not drop enough to remove the old struts

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

3. Now you will see that there is an ABS sensor wire and the brake line attatched to the strut. Cut the cable tie holding the ABS wire and also remove the horse shoe clip holding the brakeline in.

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

4. The two bottom bolts can now be removed (19mm) The top bolt adjusted the camber so be sure to put this back where it came from, the bottom bolt is just a standard bolt.

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

5. At this point its advisable to repeat this process on the other side as the front antiroll bar tension will hamper removal of bottom bolts.

6. Once both sides are free from the hub carrier the 3 12mm nuts cam be removed securing the top mount.

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

Hold the unit with one hand under the wing while you remove the three nuts so it doesnt drop down and damage the CV boot

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

7. At this point i took the oppertunity to steam clean the wheel arches and re apply some stone chip protection.
Before

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

After

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

8. As my coilovers have the ability to adjust strut length I measured and adjusted them off the car to match each other, then adjusted the spring platform height so the spring was nice and snug in its seatings

9. The new strut can now be fitted in the reverse order.

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

Reduced: 48% of original size [ 799 x 535 ] - Click to view full image

Reduced: 71% of original size [ 535 x 799 ] - Click to view full image

10. Always do a double check of all the bolts twice, Then the brakeline clip can be re fitted and cable tie to hold the ABS wire

I will continue with the rear guide in due course

I'm told that if you lower a 4wd car too much it screws up the 4wd-ness.
I'm not looking to lower mine to a stupid level but I am quite keen to know if this is true?

As konachris says, stick to a minimal drop to retain best handling unless you want to invest in taller lower ball joints and anti bump steer mods

I'm not, The guide isnt finished yet but will put a note that a geometry set up would be required after fitment, Unless you have a camber gauge, But all settings would need to be checked anyway.

Echo above comments, Having a very low looks great but does nothing for handling. it seems most people have the prodrive settings then tweaked a little to suit their needs.

Fronts fitted just the rears to do. Was impressed with ease of fitment. Will need to get it booked in for the camber etc though to make sure all is in line.

Looking at the strut comparison photo on the above link, the BCs look much shorter than the original struts. With the 'minimal drop' as suggested by Bren, how much lower will the car be?

Just dropped the car off for fitting - just checking for fitting (with rear extenders) and alignment to pordrive settings how long should I be looking at? Also if how much lower than std are they as they come? I know pre-load is set from the factory but are the heights equal and if so how low?

The height platform is adjustable so in theory you can adjust it to as high or low as you wanted,
The struts are alot shoter than standard struts but all this will change is the amount the wheel drops down when jacked up, If you are looking for a track set up, you can use the lower strut adjuster to change the droop of the wishbone.
Hope I've explained that enough to understand

Im looking after my daughter this morning but will update Whiteline price requests as soon as I get in tthe office.

The original springs and struts have a lot of droop once the weight of car settles on them. Coilovers dont. If you made coilovers the same length as the original struts then youd have the thick end of a foot wheel to arch clearance!

The coilovers arent set up as they come, if you fit them as they come out of the box then your car will be sat low low low. You need to set spring preload and ride height.

Sadly I dont have suggested damper lengths for the Imprezas to aid with the fitting. Ill try to get the info

Got mine yesterday along with DunATR's and Aberdeen Al's.......................

VERY PLEASED with the qualtity and fitment of these. Set up Boyakasha's car (along with him and DuncATR) and the car sits great and we've left it on SOFTEST setting all round to settle in the springs a little quicker.

Also, cutting the adjusters to length is not an issue.......... so long as you are sure what you are doing (MARC)

GREAT JOB ONCE AGAIN BREN...................... thanks a lot for everything m8 - couldn't have had anywhere near the success we have had with this GB if it wasn't for you.

Russell
