What this thread highlights is the hypocrisy of the coppers sometimes. Sorry Stuart, but if a copper is in a bad mood, s/he will enforce the law the the maximum. We have all seen and in some cases know, of people that have been fined or worse for have a sarnie at the wheel. Yet whilst that person was being fined, I am sure that 2 in 10 cars driven past at the time would have a smoking driver. So if people get stopped for eating, they should get stopped for smoking.

Since we got the scoob, i'm not alowed to smoke in the car anyway. My life wouldn't be worth living if I did.

Hang on Cheecky Jim, you smokers pay more towards the NHS, because you will be the people making the most use of Hospitals and Doctors, wondering where your lungs dissapeared to.
And as for passive smoking, try going out anywhere (pubs etc), or doing anything, where you can effectively prevent yourself breathing in other peoples passive cr@p.
It doesnt just dissapear forever after you blow the smoke out, it still affects many more people than just the smoker.
Has anyone here actually watched the new smoking adds, where a 30 year old man has lost a lung due to cancer? well all that secondary smoke is contributing the shortening the lives of a whole lot of people.
Its not really an issue about concentration in cars though, I dont recon it will distract a driver any more than a nagging wife, or a radio that needs tuning, so until it is totally illegal, drive on, smokers.

Cheeky Jim,

I make that paying for the NHS three times......see you didn't even notice the last one.

Personally, I find the use of mobile phones more offensive than smoking. I mean, how long does it take to light a *** vs. holding a phone to your ear for a chat.

As a biker, however, I do enjoy dodging lit *** butts and bits of ash being flicked out of Transit windows as I filter past.
I seem to remember reading of an accident a few years back about a biker who was killed after swerving into oncoming traffic as a result of a *** end kindly discarded into his visor opening.

Fosters,

Thanks, I know that I can now drive through Surrey with an easy mind .

You non-smokers are the biggest bunch of whingers I've EVER come across!

If I didn't smoke already, you'd make me WANT to START just to pi55 you off!

My life (death?), my choice. I won't force my opinions on you so don't force yours on me.

And I can think of about 97 other things that are FAR more dangerous in a car than 'smokin' a ***', and guess what.... non-smokers do them too!

(cue BIG flames!)

Smokers can be banned, but as long as they don't ban BJs - that's OK.

97? okay, lets hear them
My point was that smoking is fine in cars, but its the issue of smoking that gets me, your life, your death, sure, but at the same time, you're screwing up other peoples health with your 2ndary smoke,
thats the only prob I have with smoking, cause its my life, my death Im worried about.

Falling asleep in their beer would be a best case scenario for me, usually have people commiting suicide by continuously ramming their heads against the bar, but I press on, determined to convert all and sundry to my way of thinking, which is, of course, the right way.
Bloody dirty habit, what what, in this day and age, what, and I was going to go on about how you lot polute the atmosphere, but remembered that I drive a ultra polluting car, and thought better of it

IntegraR - I smoke in places where people smoke: Pubs, my house, my car etc

I don't smoke in places where people DON't smoke ie, work, restaurants, non-smoking pubs etc

If you don't like smoking (worried about your health), stay away from smokey places!

I hate it when people come into a smoking pub (there are non-smoking pubs you can go to) and then complain that its smokey! Of course it is! People are smoking!

Why am I uptight? As Cem said, probably high blood pressure......

Think of smoking like putting diesel in your scooby and that might help you to give up! Actually, it's worse than that because at least scooby parts can be replaced with nice new ones...

About the fist question though - can't you be done for it already if the copper catches you lighting up or taking it out of your mouth for a moment while driving? Isn't that just like puting a Kit Kat or something in you mouth? What's the law anyway? If you're staring straight ahead at the road while you do it, why can you be done? Is it just for taking one hand off the wheel, like while changing gear!?

So we have people that can open *** packet, take off the wrapper, open the flip top, remove a ciggy, put it in their mouth, pick up a lighter and light their cigarette with one hand, without taking their eyes off the road.

With that level of dexterity could I recommend card sharp or magician as a suitable well paid profession

OK, So I have forgotten another way in which I pay for the NHS because of my smoking. I also pay for private healthcare (bupa) on top, so if I need a new lung, then I will go private anyway (Not sure if Bupa covers new lungs and I am joking on this one).

I have a number of friends who are bikers and one who broke his back and is in a wheelchair cause a numpty **** t-boned him on a roundabout. So I do not throw my *** ends out the window if I know a biker is behind me. (I also move to the side of the lane on the motorway to let them through with more space.) I also do not empty my ashtray out the window nor do I throw empty *** boxes out of the window either.

So after all that, lets just all agree to disagree......and how many of you non-smokers were ex-smokers??? You lot are the bloody worst.......if I want a lecture on smoking and it's effects, I will get my wife to explain....she's a nurse.....and she smokes...

so chuff off....... Jamie

Just to add further....

Off a reliable source I can reveal the following:

in 1999 treating smoking related diseases cost the NHS approx £600 million.

In 1999 income generated from Smokers purchasing Cigarettes was over £9 Billion.

If all smokers in the UK stopped tomorrow, the lost revenue from cigarettes would equate to approx 6p in the Pound on your income tax bill......

Would you be willing to pay??? ......

No I thought not......So lets just stop right now, the persecution of Smokers....

Er Banshi, I must be the wrong job then.

I can in fact, open a sealed packet and extract a *** one-handed and light it without taking my eyes of the road. Quite easy if you use your teeth as well. However, I cannot dial a mobile without taking my eyes off the road and hence I do not use them in car.

Does require that I have said packet near me in the car though.

Its a real pig if I leave them in my jacket in the boot, trying to climb pull the back seat down while negotiating a roundabout is fun (this last bit is a lie).

Cheers

Ian

BAN IT the only place you should be able to smoke is in your own house. Have you ever seen a smoker get done for littering, there are more ash tray mounds knocked out in car parks, even lighted nub ends tossed out of the window on to following cars and nothing ever said.

OOoops,
ive definately started something here

smokers, burn the lot of em, but in a smoke free way obviously

now guys, did I ever say whether I smoked or not!?

all I said was should it be illegal as in my mind its worse than eating/drinking!

Shaun wins the prize for fastest assumption. Must be a first for Shaun, being fastest at something mental

And for those who cant dial a mobile without looking 1) just try it, you may make some new friends in the process (wrong numbers)
or 2) buy a voice dial phone
