I'm not disagreeing with M8, it's just that virtually ant activity that involves taking your hands off the wheel, or being distracted (talking to your passenger for example) is going to affect your ability to remain in cintrol of the vehicle or react to a problem. Where do you start?

Im a smoker but I don't smoke at home or even within a mile of my son, so smoking in the car on the way to work is a luxury for me.

All you Non-Smokers can become like us with a few squirts of Tar into your lungs (Hmmmm)

About the eating thing - you can eat a chocolate bar without taking your attention off the road (and hardly removing your hand from the wheel). Can you still be done for this? If so, why?

I'm a smoker. But I agree that smoking should be baned when driving. Think about it your no longer allowed to use mobile phones when driving, so why should you be allowed to hold a cig.

The reson for my views are:

I was in a car once when a passenger in the back went to fick his ash out the front window(3 Door) and it came back in and landed on the drivers neck. The drivers next move was to shout F**K quite a bit and take both hands off the wheel and grabbing his burning neck. Now if it wasn't for the quick reaction of the guy in the front passenger seat i might not be posting this now.

At the end of the day why don't you just pull over get out the car and and have a qiuck cig. Your car will smell alot nicer for it and you will reduce the chances of having a accident.

And in the word's of forest gump.

I don't really have a thing about smoking in cars, the issue is drivers that seem to think they're sitting in the lounge not covering X feet per second.

So how's this one:- Vectra Woman joins the Motorway from another Motorway slip road (?50 - 60 m.p.h.) with a map balanced on the wheel turning pages. Puts down map makes call on mobile, finishes call eats chocolate bar, finishes chocolate bar drinks from a 2ltr bottle (lemonade/ designer water), makes another call. Finishes call, brushes hair & puts on lipstick using rear view mirror! Makes another call, lights cigarette finishes ciggie takes another drink and reapplies lipstick (no mirror needed this time).

This was continuous action, from one thing to another with no more than a momentary pause & at speeds up to 70.

A woman was checking her kid in the back of the car a few years back and not looking. My dad was turning right in a small van and she ploughed into the back of him at 35-40 mph without braking first.

Wrote the van off, trapped my dad inside with ruptured fuel tank. Could have been disastrous.

However, get a life Robski you boring old aged twit. I bet you are the type of person that wants to ban everything that is enjoyable - boxing, F1, etc etc.

I am an individual and should have the right to choose what I do with my life. Stop trying to ban everything - I can safely drive a car whilst smoking, drinking a can, tuning the radio etc etc. I dont use the phone as it distracts you too much and I hate that but smoking is fine.

Next you will be posting about lowering the speed limit and getting more speed cameras.

Wow, cool chick, right up to the point she slams into the back of a lorry.

What I am saying is that I feel safe having a smoke as I drive as I believe I can do it without putting myself or others at risk. I.e. I don't need my hands off the wheel for very long (couple of seconds to light a ***) and more importantly I can do the whole act of smoking without taking my eyes off the road or my attention off what is going on around me.

Applying make-up in the car is a real no-no as is using a mobile because your attention is distracted from the task in hand, i.e. covering X feet per second in a 1 ton metal weight etc.

I think that is the difference.

You obviously don't like smoking in cars, but strangely don't seem to be to bothered about drink driving! Let's see some statistics about how many smoking related RTAs there are each year compared to drink related ones. Get your priorities right!

Smoking whilst driving is no more likely to detract from your concentration than many other activities, and it does not actually impair you reaction times. Can't say the same about drinking though.

You will probably find most smokers can do this. The only time you need to take your eyes off the road is to find which window button to press.
For the record, I can roll a cig under my coat in a force 9 gale with one hand while it is raining. Most good golfers can do this.

All you do gooder anti smoking s3umb4gs.. I've read all the things you want to ban. You should all get motorbikes.. no stereo, no passengers to distract you, no chance of using a mobile, can't light up because of the gentle breeze, change gears with your feet, no windows to wind down, no ashtrays to empty (unless you get a Goldwing) and eating Big Mac, Kant Find the Chicken or an odd sandwich is nearly imposssible because the food falls off the petrol tank when you are doing wheelies.

p.s. The bit about health costs is complete pish. We pay more tax than you and we will all be dead before we retire. We may need some intensive short term treatment in the next few years, but you will go on for years, getting gradually sicker, needing more and more treatment, eventually you will be to old to work, so you will be wanting a pension, placing an unwelcome tax burden on MY kids. Eventually you will be too old to go for a crap, so you will be placed in a nursing home for the last 10 years of your life, costing the NHS further millions and placing an additional tax burden for MY kids, so my question would be - would you ever f**k off and die and leave my kids alone.

Nothing better to prove a point than forcing the opposite view to resort to insults as thats the best they can come up with.

Maybe some of the smokers should follow themselves sometimes and watch some of the drifts etc that they do as they start to light up and concentrate on getting that *** to their mouths. Maybe in fine dry, quite periods their case would hold. But on a busy wet motorway, with loads of spray I dont think so!

Im not saying that other things are not dangerous, was just making the point about the obvious disparity.

Dont forget you used to be able to drink virtually whatever you wanted then drive home. Ive heard the tales from some of the older drivers that I know. Nowdays 99.99% of drivers agree that drinking alcohol impairs the ability to drive. Maybe in 20 years time people will look back and say so did smoking, who knows.

There are many many many factors that affect the ability to drive. What about reaction times? No one ever tests your reaction times do they? No matter how routine you think a task is, you still need to use some mental capacity to perform the task. So, you have degraded your potential driving skill, and its impossible to dispute this fact.
Bear in mind, the approach to driving standards in the UK is based on the lowest common denominator, i.e. the level that the worst driver is supposed to be at.

And yes there are also many more other distractions whilst driving, Im not saying that there are not. Some of these are not preventable, some are. My point is that like drinking/eating/using a mobile, smoking is a distraction that CAN be avoided.

Geezer, you know I dont mean drink drving, I mean drinking whilst driving. Whilst I guess it is EQUALLY illegal to drink alcohol whilst driving (providing you stay below the limit) Ive yet to see anyone try it. Now drinking a can of special brew whilst overtaking a cop car is an offence Im sure you gonna get pulled for! but what about a splif!? would they notice!?

After u r recommendation an after checkin my qualifications (lighting *** in car without taking eyes off road) I went to the employment service an asked if they had any vacancies for a "card sharp" the reply was duh.. maybe for all equally qualified people
here u can advise exactly what this is ?

Possibly u can also advise us how you manage to sneeze or even put shades on whilst remaining in full control of your vehicle ?
