I had a funny turn in the yard yesterday.
I own quite a succesful transport business & have a plant rental & sales (heavy) business as well. Yesterday i felt quite dizzy an sick & went to the hospital in the early hours of the morning & they reckon i had a mini stroke. Theres a 3 letter word for it...... anyway i am 29 & at my age you would think i should be flying. Its now time for me to take a step back.
I work in excess of 80 hrs a week & constantly run about like a maniac, i rule with the iron fist.
Well not now. Lets see what the next few weeks bring.

About ten years ago I used to work approx 1 in 2, or 3 weekends in London as I got double time from the minute I locked my front door and setting off to the minute I returned and unlocked my door

most of the time that meant 48 hours pay for a weekend, so my salary was pretty good and I had a fully expensed scoob as a company car including fuel card

these days I dont do it anymore (unless its the odd foreigner ) my salary isnt as much, but im much happier

I go in early in the morning to show im keen and I finish early to show im efficient

Or do you have a strict limit to how many hours you are willing to work a week and then ring fence the rest for play, family etc
Cheers

I will take more work on, if it doesn't affect the quality of my work. If it deteriorates the quality of my work, then It will do no justice to work, nor to myself. People who work far too much, and sleep less/play less/rest less can be just chugging/slavedriving themselves, rather then performing to good standards. I don't think it is a fair practice for any individual, or to any employing company.
I have no strict limits for my working hours as such. All day on the day off Sunday today, I have worked from home, which I was not pressurised to do by anyone. I was out both nights over the weekend, which was great fun too. I actually know where and when I need to stop working e.g. right now until tomorrow morning

Yes, I find it very hard to turn overtime down, trying to build up a few things at the mo and for that I need money.

I work 12 hour days and work at least 5 but mostly 6, and I have other interests that take up my other days.

Earned £30k+ in overtime alone last year.

I still manage to find time to see my family though, as I do a variation of shift with some being nights, so have a lot of the day to do as I choose.

I have given up on all that hard work...

Now im 40 i have paid off the mortgage, owe not a penny to anyone for any of the cars or toys.

Much like Yoza i have learnt that in real terms you need very little money to live on.Its ok earning bundles and living life at work, but there is a lot more to life than that.

I work around 35 hrs a week, refuse to do anymore than that as i prefer to be pottering around the house/garden or out and about with the missus and dog.Its cost nothing to do and is great..

I used to

used to do a week of night shifts, sun till thurs, get home around 8am, get some kip on friday morning and then go back in for a friday late shift on overtime rates (time and a half plus shift allowance), then i would get home around 12.30am, get some kip and come back in for saturday overtime (double time) plus sometimes coming in on a sunday morning for triple time

after that lot i would be due in on monday morning for early shift

i had to do it (did it for a year and a half) due to some debts that i racked up when young and foolish, it helped me get my **** in shape.

this was not ***** work either, it was building Nissan Micras and Primeras, so i would argue that the workload per hour is/was above 95% of the uks work force, saw plenty of people crash and burn due to the workload as they could not handle it.

would i do it again?

if i had to then yeah, not by choice, but if it stopped me going **** up with the finances, then i would not give it a second thought, i am glad i am in the position now that i dont have to do that kind of work

This is exactly my point. Doing my old job and all the overtime demanded ended up physically hindering myself for the rest of my life. Certainly won't say I'll never do overtime again, but I would certainly have that balance between whether I'm physically ok and fit to do it.

It's getting the balance right between turning up to a job you dislike and doing as little as poss for as much as poss, or as above running a business and going flat out 7 days a week. Nothings worth a heart attack/stroke before your 30, nothing imho.

Hope you gettter though fella, least you'll repa the financial rewards in your hospital bed (jk)

If they're referring to what I think they are, It's called a TIA mate, stands for Transient Ischaemic Attack.

Info from the NHS here

Transient-ischaemic-attack - Introduction

I'd say, you need to knock things back a notch mate! And keep things like your blood pressure monitored closely by your GP.

Work hard sometimes, slack off other times (when there's sun or surf!).
Not sure what we earn but it pays all the bills, allows us to live a comfortable life with some left over for regularly adding to savings. No debts but then we also don't own a house outright like some lucky people but we don't mind.

Couldn't really be better.

I am often surprised at how much of their life and soul people give to work. Commute for hours a week, do long hours at work, suffer constant stress then get to 50 with a pot of cash but think - I'm now a fat unhealthy tub of lard who threw away my 20s and 30s to buy that M3/911/semi in Surrey - was it really worth it?

Not in my opinion.

Don't normally get paid overtime so there is no real incentive for me to work any extra. However if the demands of the particular project are such that a few extra hours here and there would help things along then I'll do it. Most of us tend to stick to the 9-5 routine which is perhaps a bit unusual for our line of work, got a few friends who do similar (Electronic engineering, software, signal processing, etc.) and they often work into the evenings on regular occasions.

On very rare occasions we do get offered paid overtime, I'll usually consider it as the extra cash is useful. However we sometimes get offered time off in lieu instead of pay and I'd always take this over pay especially if we've worked a weekend. The extra time off is far more valuable to me and also if paid by the time the tax man has had his 40% stake + the NI there doesn't seem to be a lot left for me to spend
