Ah the joys of the media whipping things into a frenzy Who is going to join me in Madagascar, bloody difficult place to get infected
There are now a couple of cases where people who were not in mexico but who had contact with returning travelers have contracted the flu.
Can't say I'm overly worried, it's somewhat like the SARS thing that hit Canada a few years back.

BTW I think the media have been waiting for this story to break for about 3 years now, ever since the bird flu scares started. I think it's a bit unfair to blame the government for the hype, they really only started talking about it yesterday, whereas it has been all over the media since Friday.. but hey don't let that stop you putting the boot in

So 150 people (of unknown age, health and fitness) have died in Mexico, and the world goes into Pan(demi)ic mode
However, several THOUSAND people die each year in the UK (e.g. 12,000 in 2005) due to "bog standard" flu,and nobody bats an eyelid!!
Look over your shoulder folks, because some sneaky cover-up/distraction is going on

The biggest upset from this is the fear hype that has been generated but people should ask questions like how the fck did it get loose?
Now I am hearing and reading articles suggesting the swine flu virus is made up of four strands, bird flu, human flu, swine flu and the asian/pacific virus...
So this virus some who got delivered through a pig, made its way to asia, decided to bone the asian virus, then hoped across and shagged the bird flu just for kicks and then somehow crossed its path with the common human flu virus and ended up as some well-ard mutation called swankers-flu?
Interestingly Henery Kissinger (I think it was him) wrote something in his book about a new world order, suggesting the way to counter the over population of the planet we would need to lose 3 billion people... so we are all in fact sheeps and cows in a field!
Anyhoos it seems the states are now looking at a possibility it leaked or got mishandled by some donuts transporting it... with their budget problems, not surprised if some pizza delivery guy was shipping it on his moped.
Folks just practice good hygiene, eat good clean food, take your vitemins and get on with your life...

How strange.....
It appears people are NOT dropping like flies after all..
12 now confirmed dead from Piggy Flu now in Mexico...
From 140+ the other day, now its just 12 they have confirmed so far.
They reckon now that people were dying from Pneumonia, following a weakened immune system AFTER having flu.

First off, it does not matter how good your medical system is, its never going to cope with a pandemic. Mexico is a good example, fairly modern hospitals. They ran out of ventilators a couple of days ago, and if you need one now you have to wait for someone to die / get better. Suddenly your high tech medical system cant cope with thousands of sick people all with the same illness.
Second, normal flu kills because its victims are weak. In most cases this is because they are over the age of 65. Their immune system cant deal with the virus before it causes pneumonia. This is what actually kills.
The H1N1 strain kills normal healthy people, the weak will survive. This is because a Cytokine storm happens, which is when your immune system attacks your own body. This is made much worse in fit people. If you are aged 20 - 35 years old, then this is the age range where it kills, in the last H1N1 outbreak the highest mortality rate were 28 year olds.
If you choose to accept it or not this virus easily kills, and many of those who died in the last H1N1 pandemic died within 48 hours of feeling ill. Its not at that stage yet, but I will come back to this point.
H1N1 is the most common flu virus, the problem is this strain is a H1N1 strain so it spreads very easily.
Its probable this situation will develop quickly, either it will fade out, or it will ramp up. We are talking weeks, by the end of May we will know the real picture. At the moment its looking like it may fade out. This is mainly due to the time of year - summer is on our side. Its not definite but various independent scientists seem to be saying the same thing.
The problem this presents us with, its likely that a major outbreak like this could last for 2 - 3 years in the background. As such come the winter we might see a major problem. We could be looking at something much more serious. In the 1918 outbreak there were 2 major mutations, the second of which killed upto 100 million people, with upto 1bn falling sick... out of a popn of 2bn...
Thats a lot of people. Coming back to my first point how do you rate your chances of getting NHS treatment once 50% of the population fall sick. Not that highly I would say.
It might never get that bad, but if it does this has the potential to wipe out everyone if it went really wrong.
If there was a 50/50 chance of an asteroid hitting earth in the next 6 months and killing say 300 - 500 million people I am fairly sure there would be mass panic... but with this it seems most normal people are not really "worried"....
