My budget is in the £6-8k range but I suppose if a very strong case was made I could hold off a little longer and spend up to £10k. It's highly unlikely I'd spend more than that.
I'll list my key requirements and try to order them for importance (most important first).

- Must be practical with 4 doors and good boot space. A coupe might be acceptable if it has decent room in the back and a good boot.
- Must be less than 60k miles and must be 2002 or newer unless compelling case can be made.
- Must be generally well equipped. My top priorities are cruise control, leather interior, climate control, lots of electric adjustment, auto-wipers. Sat nav, heated seats, auto-lights, computers, etc would all be a big bonus too.
- Must have a decent bit of poke that is applicable to over-taking (so 40-100mph range).
- Must be a good example of the particular model of car, being well looked after inside and out with FSH, etc.
- Must have a degree of 'class' to it's interior and also it's exterior looks as well.
- Ideally more than 4 cylinders but not an absolute requirement. If going for a 4-pot I'd prefer a characterful one (such as a scooby warble).
- Preferably a manual but Auto's considered.

Hmmm, didn't realize that the new-shape VRs was in range, albeit at the upper end of my price bracket. A little dull looking on the outside but by no means ugly and the interior looks quite fresh and tasteful. Defo worth a serious look in and I assume that's the same engine as fitted to the Golf GTI. If you've got any pics of your kicking around showing the built in sat nav and uprated alloys then fire them up. Don't go to any trouble taking them though; just if they are hacking around on your comp

Yeah, looked at all manners of saabs and volvo's. Tough to find nice, fast, well equipped low milers in my price range but they do come up. After all that though I find them often quite uninspiring and again I'm not a fan of saab or volvo dash design which is often cluttered and quite 'vertical' in orientation. If the perfect car came up I'd defo take a look but I don't watch the market like a hawk as I do with some of the other cars mentioned.
Some basic research suggests that the Octavia remaps to 255bhp. Probably a fairly bold claim but even if it mapped to 235 it would be pretty bloody quick at 1430kg and FWD. In fact, I've been Octavia'd out for the last 20 minutes or so and have to say it's a real curveball. Just the sort of suggestion I hadn't thought of that defo requires close consideration. To be honest, I think I'll probably have to try and arrange to drive one back to back with the ST220. My only reservation with them is the external looks. I much prefer the ST220 and even prefer the Spec B. This seems to be a mistake I'm seeing too often, IMHO, from car manufacturers that go for an 'understated' look. The car ends up looking just a little mainstream and weak. The Legacy is understated but I feel it still manages to looks quite chunky and purposeful. Dare I say it, the octavia looks like it sits on it's alloys like it's on it's tippy-toes. Almost camp

The legacy and ST220 will chomp the old fuel don't forget to factor that in to running costs.. Legacies are great cars - my last car was a GTB twin turbo estate

not mine but looks the same, yes mine has the same engine as a golf gti, the interior is very fresh and its a nice place to be if you know what I mean, the sat nav looks good allthough a £150 tomtom does a far better job,
essential extra's would be climate and 18" alloys,
desirable extra's would be xenons and sat nav and maxidot display,
the seats are very comfortable and the engine is a peach, economical aswell
