I hope we have permanently seen the back end of that.

Actually, Tel, I was focusing more on the irony inherent in a thread about SN being less active than it once was fast approaching double figures in the page count!

That's because lots of people wish it wasn't as inactive as it is now, but, like me, just recoil at what's on offer. It's not your fault or any of the moderators', but the general demographic of your populus in general. That is, the real characters have been hounded out.

What some people find to be a character as you say, some may find to be something totally different. Not everyone shares the same views on "characters", as per my original reply (post no 2 I think).

I'm not sure if it's as bad as you suggest, but I see where you're going with it. However, this can only be addressed if people like yourself contribute to the discussion forums to set an example.
The mods can discourage text speak (when we see it or it is reported) We can also remove people who are abusive etc... but reactive punitive action is only one part of the equation, we also need to proactively promote a good atmosphere on here with quality posting. The best way of doing that is for those of us who feel strongly about keeping SN a great place to hang out is to do our individual bits to keep it that way.

No, by then the entire feel of the place had changed. If Simon had left the day after he'd crushed Muppets, we'd have all been happy as Larry, but in the intervening time, the whole dynamic had changed. For the worse. And now it's dead in there.

Of course opinions differ. But generally, as on any site, the ones who generate debate are those who are just a little bit confrontational, a little bit controversial. They've gone - the silent minority with the paid-for power saw to that. And they won't come back - why should they? The level of inanity and superficiality on the board is now all-pervasive, to me at least, maybe to others too. But mediocrity has won through, and few can be bothered with mediocrity and banality in the long run. Just how i see it sorry.

Tel, you know I have the utmost respect for you - I know you feel strongly about the decline of the Muppets forum. Personally I think you're wasted in there .....which kind of brings me on to your point about the demographic shift.

You do a good job mate, that's very evident. The funny thing is, i don't think i *was* wasted in Muppets, it was just that the basis on which the regulars talked to eath other couldn't be tolerated by those who didn't understand its nuances, without wishing to sound too haughty about it. Clamping down on Muppets was, in my opinion, one of "his" worst mistakes - the people who contributed in there were able to (and did) contribute in other forums in a creative way which is all too apparently missing now. I wish i could love Scoobynet again, i really do, but while certain contributors make it a dull and lifeless (in my own opinion of course) experience, then i've just got to let it run its course from the sidelines. It's just not much fun any more.

Oh course, it's not for me to tell you what you should enjoy doing on SN: if you were/are most at home in Muppets, then so be it
I wish I was more informed about the whole Muppets thing, but I used to lurk predominantly in General and NSR, so am a bit "out of touch". All I can say is that Muppets very rarely causes us any problems in respect of moderation, probably because in the context of that forum, there is an understanding of the "expected tone/content" of the posts from the people who chose to frequent it.
In short, you can be assured that there is no policy, implicit or otherwise, of "clamping down" on muppets in the current webteam. It would great pity if Muppets reached terminal decline due to a perception that it would be ruined by a webteam with a grudge or axe to grind were that not the case in reality!
Speaking personally, my concern is much more about dealing with people who intentionally and persistently behave in ways that are disruptive to the wider community. And that can be a bit like trying to push a horse, towing a piano up a flight of stairs!

I think 50/50.
SDB ruined it with the infractions and ban-o-rama/killing muppets.
BUT a lot of that was to make it sellable to IB so you could say it's due to IB.
Then IB came along and have done a lot of good on the technical side of things
But the social/member/modding side of things has been a total ****-up and as a result of these changes 30+% of users have voted with their feet/mouse.

My personal opinion is, yes - the Infraction system (in the hands of users) was a disaster and killed off all fair play.
The new Mods, I have to say, are controlling the site far better than SDB was willing to prior to sale ................. the mass bannings were pathetic in the extreme and left a bad taste. These things take a long time to rectify.
In short, it was killed off to make it appear saleable .......... a ruthless commercial decision in essence.

People come and go but I would say the main reason that the website is slowly rolling up and becoming stagnent is the fact Subaru lost interest in the fast 4x4 market. I know a couple of dealers well and they said footfall through the door dropped like a stone with the introduction of the hatchback. And lets face it, if you wanted a fast hatch you would buy the much better Focus RS for less money. Although to my mind hatchbacks are cars for teens.
Like most car sites if there is a lack of new car buyers you become left with only second hand buyers. These eventually lower the average age of the site user so the content becomes less interesting to all.
I still look in at once or twice a year, hoping for news of a new subaru more than anything

I think its because many people like myself don't have time to post their opinion on a topic then spend the rest of the day defending your point of view due to the negative responses you receive back.
I now just pop into NSR on my lunch break to catch up on UK politics
