If it's a standard engine and still under warranty then there's no reason not to keep using oil as specified by Subaru - at least that way if it does let go again they can't get out of sorting under waranty due to incorrect oil!

The most important thing is to check the level on a very regular basis i.e. at least once a week. Even if there's not a problem these engines can still use oil - I'm sure Rob will chime in with the exact figures but IIRC 1L per 1000 miles is still deemed acceptable by Subaru. Regardless, if it starts using more oil then usual for your car then have it checked out sooner rather than later.

A true ester based full synthetic is the way to go, 5W30 for a standard engine and 15W50 is a good choice for a built forged engine. Which specific brand is personal preference but Motul or Gulf Competition are hard to beat.

well it was not long since its service (2 months) and AMC did it for me so they know that it hasnt been that long since they themselves filled it up after an oil change!!!

that with me filling up a litre last week should be ample and not down to me running it oil starvation surely!!!

I regualry check it and it has never gone below the minimum mark before I top it up

in fact when AA man checked the level (3 times) it was just on the minimum mark!!!

had to authorise dealer to go ahead with the strip down the engine , best mechanic is on holiday next week so work will commence 11th june!!!

in meantime I have spoken with HD of IM group and Mike Wood (head of Tech) both are aware of the case now and asked to be kept in loop should I encounter any ''difficulties''

Rob kindly gave me his insight to the most probable fault so I guess its just a waiting game now

thankfully got a motor care of a special friend so i can still commute

1 month of warranty left of the hatch phew!!!!

Is that 1 month of the original 3 year warranty left or have you extended it?

1ltr is deemed acceptable per 1000 miles of use in the 2.5 engine. any-more than this then you've got issues unless your running forged engines.

Just sent another 2.5 forged out the door this morning, this seems to be the norm for me at the moment.

Cool Update...

Hey ho, spent the day at Enginetuner Tuesday to have a micro service and... fit a bagful of bits I'd gathered over the last 9 months.

Carl Davey manifold spacers
Perrin 58mm turbo inlet
Perrin billet parralel fuel rails and new fuel lines with Pyroshield
Denso 750cc top feed injectors
Grimmspeed electronic boost controller
PTP turbo blanket for the VF48
DEI reflectagold tape for tmi

also new led side light bulbs
and yellow clear vinyl for fogs (racing car stuff)

It took a little longer than we expected once it was all apart - trickiest bit was feeding the new fuel lines back under the manifold...

It got later and later and I was being asked if I had booked a hotel... no way, i had to be home that night etc etc

I did have the boot ready with two jerry cans of meths for a meths map also BUT time was not on my side and with the last bolts being done up at 5.10pm I was gonna be lucky to get 'a map' to get home on...

Martyn held on though, primed his laptop with new settings for the injectors, had a little guessestimate and off he went to do his stuff...

40 minutes later he's smiling like a cheshire cat, its really smooth he said.

Crikey that was the quickest map ever ! And i was on my way for just after 6pm.

Car pulled 372bhp with more to come when Martyn gets the time to play a little bit more with the boost etc.

So I've booked another visit for next Thursday for the finalising of the V-power map AND a methanol map too.

Power was up from the last visit by 8bhp - okay considering I had removed the decat 2.5" system and replaced it was a 200 cell sportscat 3" system. So I guess I lost a bit and gained a bit, remembering that theres probably a little more to come..

Most surprising was the fact that leaving at 4am with the cruise control set at an indicated 83mph i managed 24/25 mpg getting there. On the way home same setting was showing 28+ mpg ! Surprised or what ? Also getting 22mpg around central London today - usually its 17 / 18 mpg. Superb...

Perrin do rate their fuel rails saying car will run much smoother / better / blah blah... but I didnt expect an easy 15+% better mpg from the fuel rails and injectors. (BTW got Denso new 750cc from USA delievred inc taxes for less than £200.. perfect fitment - no messing with wiring like the ecutek ones).

So thanks Enginetuner - top job as ever - top techie Paul did all the greasework and helped me do my lighting mods, and advised on my DEI bling reflectagold tmi mods.

And a big thank you to Martyn for such quick, magical mapping mastery

TBH I wasnt expecting anything massive as these mods are all prep work for the next purchse... a new turbo. When funds allow I'd like a SC46 billet please - if anyone reading this wants to sell theirs and go rotated please pm. (Come on Jay you know you want to.. lol). (anyone else got a decent turbo thatll fit and in good nick please pm)

And as I dont want to go fmi I'm sorting the heat management as best I can - after the drive home i popped the bonnet - the cast red inlet was completely chilled... the new Carl Davey TFT spacers are the business

A

PS sorry to hear of more engines popping... gotta be nearing 15-20% failures.

Fingers crossed it all works out OK.

Mahle forged pistons are tried and tested and used in a good few engines from this thread including my own. Don't think you'll find them any cheaper than £418 a set from advancedautomotives.com

Sounds like you had quite a day! Good result though.

Not convinced on your improved fuel economy, I suspect it may simply be down to the new bigger injectors. IIRC the mpg calculation is based on injector flow rate vs duty cycle. Bigger injectors = less duty cycle so the car 'thinks' it's using less fuel - unless it's been recalibrated for the new injector size of course in which case maybe it's correct.

Personally I don't believe the mpg readout anyway, mine sits at about 22.5 around town and yet calculating it by milage versus known fuel consumption (i.e. how much I'm pumping into the tank) gives an eyewatering average of approx 13mpg!!!

Cool

Neil .... 13 mPg ? ! *. Crikey mate I hope not. Lol

Like I said I was surprised, doing 243 miles and still having an indicated 'good' quarter of a tank of fuel...

You are probably right BUT I hope you're not. : )

All the best man !

Guys

Anyone on here fitted the litchfield rear light mask/film mine arrived today along with a few other bits and was hoping to fit them this long weekend.

Wondering if anyone had any tips/advice to applying them properly or a step by step guide etc.

Thanks in advance

I got someone to fit mine, but theres a few little bubbles. Rob advised me to get the ones from the states as there pre-cut and stick straight on without any hassle.

Absolute ball-ach from what I can remember everyone in the states sprays them and the results are much better.

I've had the Litchfield overlays and TBH they're not too bad to fit but the colour is not great. They're quite a deep plum red and definitely don't look OEM. Bluebatmobile overlays from the States are much more OEM looking.

Any overlays are much easier to fit with the lights removed from the car - slightly soapy water and a hairdryer is the way to go.

Soapy water but not too much, and a hair dryer are the tricks to use. remove the lamps from the car so it ensures you can wrap them just over the edge around the back to stop them lifting.

Take your time really and try not to heat them too much

Well, just arrived back from Scotland.
The mapping session was great, the car is now running a really smooth safe map with the extra racerom features. Car averaged 361 bhp and 405 lb torque with most of the power low down. No signs of any knock or det so hoping the engine is a good one.

Ps. The golf was good too, got away with the weather, gullane 1 was nice and archerfield was fantastic.......

Carlos..

Omg, what a day. Thought I would give the car a few exterior tweaks this afternoon. Went to remove the grill to find out the front bumper needs to be taken off!!!! Just to get to at four screws, madness what were substitute thinking. Due to the ball ache I thought I would leave it till tomorrow so I can take my time and start fresh in the morning so thought right I will fit the rear light film to find to get to two small bolts I've got to take off all the plastic on the rear hatch! Why do they have to make this all so complicated. Anyhow lights are all out but one small error with a broken plastic clip on one of the side moulded panels grrrrrr

Tomorrow is a new day lol

haha Stevie, I know your pain. When I did the boot chrome, had to take it all apart, except I disconnected the release switch then shut the boot! Que 2 hours of lying in the boot from the back seats trying to get the connectors back together so I could open the boot again!

Your not going to like this, there is a way off taking the upper grille off without taking the front apart

Air-conditioning should be serviced every 12 months to make sure it's in tiptop condition Ideally. But realistically most folk including myself do it every 2 years. it could be that yours has just run low on R134A Refrigerant.

When the air con system is sat idle it drys the seals out and it leaks a small amount past it, you need to operate the aircon at least once every 2 weeks for 5 minutes to circulate the PAG oil and gas.

I wouldn't use halfords or kwikfit they cant be trusted I'm afraid, I'm very sceptical with those lot, we found one system had been filled with sealant because Halfords couldnt be arsed to fit a new condenser

on another note the grille can be removed without taking the bumper off.

remove the four retaining clips off the top and stick you hand down between the radiator and the grille and take the screws out.
