They certainly would. I personally hate them with a passion as they do nothing but ruin the road surface, cost a fortune to install which as local tax payers we fund and are a menance to our cars, however if they proved a deterrant and saved any more animals from being killed in our road, then so be it.

I am sick of the tools who speed on our road and am quite happy to see them slow down by any means

Sorry to hear what you have been thru. Cats are strong lil things as Charlie appears ot be proving. A friend had a similar thing years back. Cat had 2 broken legs, jaw, pelvis and loads of internals, but the lil bugger make it all the way back home!
Made a full recovery.

One of my sisters cats got hit, bust its leg and could never use it again. Poor lil thing has had an unusable leg for about 8 years now as she refused to allow it to be removed.

All the best for Charlie to make a full recovery

I got a lump in my throat when you said how brave your little girl was

Best wishes for Charlie making it home, its awful knowing they will be scared and going through unnecessary pain because of someone else.

I always slow down and look around cars because i know i would be devestated if a cat run out in front of me. I think i would cry if i hit a bird etc.
Im lucky that the cats where i live dont like my noisy exhaust and they hide when they hear me coming.

Problem is, I'm not convinced speed bumps have the desired effect in that respect, Swiss.

People just tend to hoof it between the bumps meaning reaction times (taking the foot off the more heavily applied throttle and braking) would be longer and I'm guessing peak velocities would also be higher than if the cars maintained a steady pace, so braking distance would also be higher. Ditto if you use a succession of speed cameras

I live on a blind corner, you think people would slow down when they can't see the road ahead wouldn't you.....Nope.

Some people are just thick, arrogant (i.e. I'll drive as dammned well fast as I want) or both when it comes to driving.

I honestly don't know what the solution is.....except maybe to ban tools from the road!

We do also have to maintain some balance to the argument: Clearly some accidents would be avoidable had drivers been sticking to the speed limits, but some accidents are caused by cats having no road sense whatsoever and have little to do with the driver concerned- there's not much we can do about that.

Our last cat used to be a nightmare: he'd just run and hope for the best. I caught him sitting in the middle of the road once or twice...despite scaring him half to death on each occasion to try and teach him a lesson... WTF

Would you believe it, he lived to be 20....his name? 'Lucky'

Thing is, doesn't matter what type of driver on the road, cats will still get run over, the only differences is if one does get ran over then a good person would stop and try to help:

I nearly ran over a cat yesturday: Was driving round the estate at 20mph. Noted some neighbours nattering on the pavement and then a cat runs out basically just 15ft infront of the car. Even at 20mph it would be inpossible to stop in time.

Luckily the one person nattering saw the cat in time and gave the cat a kick as it ran past making it run in the other way - quick thinking.

Last time I had a cat run out I couldn't stop in time - it went under the van. **** knows where it went, because I didn't see it come out the other side in the mirror and it wasn't underneath nor in the road (or on the grill ). Lucky moggy missed the tyres.

Chances are he'll be just as upset at being kept in a cage at the vet... don't forget, he doesn't know what a vet is, why he's there or why it's for his own good, he probably just wants to come home, curl up and go to sleep until he feels better.

If all goes well and he's home soon, try to resist the temptation to pester him too much - if he wants to get out of the way and hide somewhere, don't be surprised, just check up on him regularly to make sure he's OK but otherwise try and leave him alone. He'll let you know when he's feeling better and wants to play again.

She was very brave. I was slumped down by the vet wall as the vet explained the problems on the night and I was a complete wreck. I think the whole finding him, driving like an idiot to the vets and looking at him on the table all bashed up eventually caught up with me and I felt sick and just had to sit down. Little one just held my hand and was saying "dont worry daddy, it will be all okay !! " Bless her

Normally he hates the road, hates our noisy scoobs and always runs a mile when we start them up but for some reason he ventured onto the road, god knows why ?

Good luck my friend. Horrible when this sort of thing happens. Out last cat was killed outside our house and driving over the splat mark for a week wasn't pleasant.

I reported a cat to the vets only recently at the end of our road and they said they would call the council to collect - I asked if they'd ID it if it was chipped and they said no they don't do that - That really annoyed me. Fortunately our current cat was returned to us via his chip.

As for speed bumps we have a road close to the school and the bumps are so close together you can't speed up in between. We had a speed meter fitted to our road recently and I made every effort to go as fast as possible over the wires - I want them in our street. I do 20 or less round our roads mainly as I'm either warming up or cooling down and some idiots hurtle round without a care and if the cats are a worry the kids wondering in the middle of the road are another issue.

I'm so glad to hear that he was showing good signs of recovery Swiss. Surely if he is up to what you said, he must be alright once the operation is over and he has recovered from all that too. Won't be too long before he is taking up too much room on your bed just like our Fearless Freddie who is a very large cat does! When he moves, Mrs Leslie and I have to as well.

Looking forward to some good news from you soon about the operation.

What a brave little cookie you've got there - brought tears to my eyes x

We had the very same problem - fields opposite - great hunting ground - that's why we think our cat crossed the road, unfortunately he was hit on the way back & was found in someones garden.

Hopefully this will have put Charlie off venturing even near the road in future.

Why can't people just stop to see if they can help............?

I have five cats, and can't understand why someone wouldn't stop?

I stop if I see one injured or dead on the road and try and find the owner. Unfortunately though, cats just don't understand roads. Mine like to lay in the middle of ours and wait for me to come home, usually chasing the car up the street to the house.

Hope he makes a full recovery.

*** Charlie News update for all of his fans ***

We got a call from the vet today (actually two calls) and the great news is that the little fluff monster is coming home tomorrow
He has responded well to all the treatment and the surgery went well so we can give a small sigh of relief at that.

The only area of concern is his pupils as they are not fully sorted and there is a small chance that there could be complications . We cannot know for a week or so but we are not going to get ourselves worried about that right now and will deal with it as and when we need to.

So once again and I know I sound like a broken record, but thank you for all the lovely messages, I have been passing them on and Zoe has been reading them every day.

I hope the little chap makes a full recovery, we lost a couple of cats to the roads and it really suck, they do become part of the family.

I did own up to running one of ours over it was dark, she ran out from behind stuff under the front wheel as i was parking (rolling up to the garage door, first i knew was the bump and the howl. It still haunts me as i park up on the drive each day.

She was 16/17+ y/o and going senile poor thing, it was not worth putting her through the amputation and recovery - not just financially she would have had a very poor quality of life post op at her age assuming she survived the op.

Not posted before as i thought it must be a joke and i do not much like cat jokes funnily enough, how wrong could i have been about this thread

Get stocked up on his favourite treats, fluff up his bed and get the electric blanket out because Charlie will be loving the extra attention

Ah you see not all my posts are crap jokes (though it must be said there is a slant towards that )

Shame about you running your own cat over. I used to have to check everytime I left the driveway for our little bugger, but thankfully he was scared of the noise and used to leg it

Well today is the day Charlie is meant to come home and I think a few people are excited in this house

The cage is all ready by the door, the food well stocked up, though we are going to have to use liquid food for the first week or so as his jaw is wired.

When he gets home I shall put up a picture of him safely ensconced back in his favourite seat (you lot will love it when you see where he normally sleeps )

Can't tell you glad I am to hear the news. His recovery will accelerate when he is back with you of course.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures of him. Fearless Freddie has a good assortment of spots too. Especially on top of my ham radio when I am shouting at the rest of the world!

Great little gif there
Well we had another call from the vets and although he was meant to be coming home, they have advised that they may want to keep him in for another 24 hours just to be safe. Not a major problem as we would like him home when he is good and ready, though the kids will not understand so the compromise will be for them to visit him at 2 p.m this afternoon and see how he is and whether we can bring him home

Well when you see the seat he sleeps in, it will all make sense
