The point is that it wouldn't seem to them like they were going to be risking their life. I'm sure they didn't jump in there knowing the current would be too strong.

BBC NEWS | Scotland | Two dead after river rescue bid
One dog drowned, the other is missing. While this story is tragic, I can't believe that two parents would leave a 7 month old baby in a pram at the riverside while they jump in to save their dogs!
There are now 4 orphaned children because of their stupidity. I understand that people love their dogs, but they must have completely taken leave of their senses.

Our dog is an insanely good swimmer (black lab). Despite being quite a swimmer myself, if she got in trouble, I'd get in worse strife if I tried to help her. She's a seal with ears and a built in wetsuit!
Just spent a week nr Porthleven where the waves are incredibly powerful - a few caught her but she was fine. I also swim with her a lot in the Summer (in the sea) - she just keeps on going and going and going...
She got a battering (by a wave) just after I took this (phone) pic:

Surely the guy jumped in first to try and save his dog but got himself into difficulties as his wife was watching. At realising her husband was in trouble the woman then jumped in to save him, obviously not wanting her child to grow up without a dad and she perished aswell.
I very much doubt the both of them jumped in together, and just left the child on the path.

Leslie - thanks! I was most impressed by those rocks - proper "arty" look to them. Just along (East) from Porthleven. I'm no good in rocks - think the area has a bit of slate and some granite.

At the time of these events im sure people dont stnad there pondering if they will drown or not,you just do what ya gotta do.
im not sayin i would jump over niagra falls to save my dog but if i saw it flappin about goin under in a lake etc i dont think id just watch it for 5-10 mins pondering the pros and cons.
just like when u shoot across the road to get to the other side or overtake someone, you dont think a blow out wil occur etc

Four and a half stone of swimming machine, he can tow an adult with ease.

P.S. My other dog wouldn't get any closer than around 10 feet from a decent stretch of water.
