Different midwives will tell you different things, as daft as it seems go with instinct and dont be afraid to ask other parents what works for them Congrats by the way

That's why our two have never ever slept in our room - and we get the sounds doubled
(Add the cats snoring and it's like a warzone
)
Butter wouldn't melt most of the time though, I see the picture of them in the bluebells has been posted.
And Pimmo / Matteeboy, you have a pair of charmers there

Pimmo, some babies are always hard work, I found it definately got easier as they got older. If it had got harder do you think I would have had another when my son was 17 months old? Nope. It sounds like things are getting better with the three of you.

He's still very young so I don't think you have anything to worry about...if he was 6 years old and you had this going on then yes, I think you would have a problem. Neither of our nieces were sleeping through at 8 months old...and they were miserable, grizzly little ****s!

I don't know why Pimmo is so fed up at this early point with his sleepless nights
Wait for a few years until your baby becomes a free spirited teenager. Then your real troubles will begin. You will be worried about what crowd he is mixing with, why he is late home, whether he is f@gging, sh@gging, underage drinking, whether he is studying in his room, or mincing about on MSN with his 1000 mates and some unknown cyberbirds etc.etc. Your sleepless nights have only started yet, mate

Realistically, children are a continuous responsibility. Not just the joy, but embrace the worries forever for the ones you have created, and love them to bits

Pimmo.
Whatever you did before James was born, you need to start doing again, as in hobbies and leisure activities.
You need time on your own, dont go mad and **** off for days, but put a couple of hours aside for YOU.
Dont get overwhelmed with whats going on or you will crack up.
The lifestyle change is so dramatic and the feeling of (uselessness in my case) and the weight of responsibility is heavy.
I would ask my mum or neice to mind the baby for a couple of hours and I would go the gym and do the things I did before Ben arrived.
The same goes for your other half.
I had it bad, to the point were I was having thoughts of fooking off, I began to resent the poor little lad as I believed he was fooking up my life. I look back now and feel ashamed of these thoughts but at the time they were very real.
It was that bad for me that I was looking forward to going back to work, and I hate work.

Pimmo, is he really that bad? I spent almost 3 months with my son attached to me, don't forget baby James has been taken from his comfy home in Mrs pimmo's tummy to this world of carziness! Not mush has to change for you if you just stay calm.
When he cries make a cup of tea, sit down and stick him over your shoulder and just chill. I used to have a little dance with fin to something on mtv base. It would keep me calm and he would usually fall asleep.
This crying business is just what they do. If the me has assured you he has a clean bill of health, then all he wants is comfort. Have you got a baby sling? Or maybe a mobile/swing that he can sit in. I swaddled my son up so he felt like he was being held and he loved the feeling of security.
I can't help but want to be supportive, but also want to say..... Pull yourself together man!!
I have been there myself, and the second time my son wasn't even walking when my daughter was born.
Have you been out since he was born?

I'm no where near the way I was when I started this thread and a lot of that is down to the replies I got ... I'm not looking to get passed this, I've looking to get over it and learn to accept it.
He slept well last night after his cry .. his poiintless cry might I add![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Hes next to me at the moment, making baby noises and waiting for his mum to have a bath and feed him ..
Hes feeding very randomly .. between 2 hours and 6 hours .. after 6 we've been waking him up, but I don't know if we should be... the guides say 8 -12 times in 24 hours which he is easily doing, but its not regular .. do we let him sleep til hes hungry ? or wake him up ?

I would say i the day, no longer then 3 hours pimmo, otherwise he will get lathargic. After his appetite increases and his sucking reflex gets stronger he will get more milk out in a shorter period of time, so will naturally go longer between feeds. But at the newborn stage I would say to aim for no longer than 3 hours at the most between feeds, and then leave him go as long as he wants at night.

... he seems to want to feed three or four times between 8pm and midnight ... is this normal ? or just because he was born around that time .. I dunno

and what would you consider to be night time ? 7pm to 7am ? or midnight to say 6am ?
http://askville.amazon.com/newborn-b...uestId=4565740
these guys say let the baby sleep unless they are under 4lbs ... the easy option is obviously to let him sleep.. but I want the best option for him
and us.

How long does a new born sleep for and should you wake him for his feed??? - Maternal & Child - MedHelp
Seems the masses agree that if the baby is getting 6-8 or 8-10 wet nappies, which James is, to let him sleep until he wakes..
However I think due to him losing a bit of weight I might wake him as suggested by Hysteria1983 during the day and let him sleep at night ...

I would say that at least until he is back up to his birth weight and maybe an extra pound to get him going no longer than 3 hours in the day. Obviously he cannot be force fed, but if he is happy to be gently roused after 3 hours for a feed then I would say to do it. Then let him sleep as much as he wants at night.
As for wondering what we class as night time.... how long is a piece of string? I would simply aim to meybe get him to have his last feed at nightfall at the moment ad that will be a simple cue for him at his tiny age to understand that dark = sleep. So I would say if he has a feed at about 9.30, use that as a sort of bedtime and put him in his basket in the corner of the room. I always had mine in the same room as me until they were well over 4 months, I would simply put them in the opposite side of the room and we just dimmed the lights. Obviously when he wakes in the night he needs to be fed, as he is still so young, but if he is filled up in the day, and it is nice and dark and quiet, he may just sleep that extra hour or so at night. And the will slowly get longer as he feeds better in the day.
Once James is back up and a little beyond his birth weight, let him take a little more of a lead so he finds his own routine, but there is nothing wrong with a small amount of guidance.
Just remember that he will get hungry more often than a baby who is having formula, as the breast milk is digested a lot better/faster leaving baby hungry more often. If Mrs pimmo gets her mates saying oooohhhh so and so 's baby slept for 8 hours when baby x was 2 weeks old, how is James doing? I just had to ignore it.
Happy to help.

Oh, and the feeding in the early evening to midnight is sometimes described as cluster feeding. Sometimes they tend to do this in the evening is they are restless and can't settle, so once Mrs pimmo has fed James and it happy he is full, you can then step in and attempt to sooth him to sleep with a cuddle? If you are free to do it anyway. You don't want him to feed too much close together as he could have too much just from attempting to sooth, and end up with belly ache.
The cluster feeding usually isn't an issue when a baby does it in the day, but as it mostly goes on at night it seems more stressful because mum and dad want to chill. All you can do is feed him and then encourage him to settle afterwards.
