Reading into this, it may not be SUBARU's fault but instead, the dealer you bought the car from.

Let's say someone there end damaged the roof or broke the screen accidentally. They would probably have it repaired inhouse and obviously didnt make a very good job of it.

I'd get an independent paintshop to inspect it and see what they say. Find the normal levels of paint thickness for that age subaru and ask them to check paint thicknesses.

I suppose the dealer could say you've had bad paint done while in your ownership, so im not sure you could prove anything even if you find out its had paint from new

Im a painter by trade, and i've painted some unregistered cars in the past. One with roof damage 09 plate 4 miles on the clock still had all its plastic stickers and not had a PDI check or anything (non subaru btw). So it could of quite easily had a repair on the roof.

You might have to rough it and pay for the repair to be done, But use the subaru bodyshop as you should... have some come back if the rust comes back in 12months time Just get them to put it in written text that they guarentee the work etc.

Except in this case it looks like it needs both screens removing, the mtal underneath treating and painting along with the roof and then the screens refitting.
