OH, I'm for real ...... my comments on ECU's are quite correct in that they cost very little to produce - but are sold on 'perceived value' ... that's all I said.

Where did I say I could supply MY97/98 Impreza ECU's? I didn't - so your request for stock is a bit odd

you made it sound so easy that anyone working in electronics should be able to do it.
although parts are cheap to source you have to keep in mind labour to fit them all together, premisis, business rates, staff and most important testing and cost of certification for ce marking etc.

the same can be said for many things in the market place take a look at mobile phones and computers.

my comment was not to be offensive just to show things ar'nt just about parts, it's all the commercial's that go with them.

Your point would hold water ...... if all ECU's were the same price to buy ....... they are not, despite being pretty much the same costs to make.

My point being that we are charged a price the market will bear, a 'percieved value' ..... call a ECU a 'RallyX Super Charged Mapped Power ECU' and you can charge £££££££'s more - see what I'm getting at?

FWIW a new blank original ECU (unprogrammed) for a Vauxhall Astra Diesel is about £435+vat fitment and programming (about £65+vat )

So, for the consumer thats about £575 all in to sort out a standard run of the mill Astra diesel

you need the sti engine (pistons, rods, cams, valve train, valves are different), sti turbo, sti injectors, sti maf, sti inlet pipe and then you need to change some pins over in the ecu loom (I can tell you which pins) and only then could you use the sti ecu.

I think I see what Pete's getting at.
However, the manufacturing cost of the ecu does not bear any reflection on its retail value mainly because of the time and cost taken to write the original program.
I use to work in the computer manufacturing industry. We use to buy in eeproms at £4 each bulk buy. After being on the burner for a couple of minutes the programmed chip was then sold £120.
I don't know how the car ecu mappers work, but I would imagine they'd start off with a base map from the original ecu, and then use mapping software (which they probably paid a lot of money for, plus the license to use it) to tweak the program.

You know the little kid at your school who couldn't do his adding up? ... that's DazW ......

Lets say I was 72 in 2000 ... that would make me 81 next Monday ... we don't just stop living at 79, you know? So, what's your point? and do you not think you are taking life a tad serious?

Good point and I will accept the figures.

But, in 6 years time that same ECU - maybe off a scrapped Astra will be far less than one taken from a 6 year old Impreza .... it's that 'perceived value' I am trying to explain and what it costs.

Err ...there was no Math involved, just merely pointing out that you're not 70 odd?

But if we were to do some Math & you were indeed 81 next Monday ...this would give us your birth date as 19/06/1928

Luckily for us/me SN still has a search facility

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...by-driver.html

but post #25 (dated 08/10/01) has you stating your age as 72 ...when (if we're using your own stated d.o.b above) you should have been 73?

As to my point? ...just letting the newbies know what you're about Pete, that's all

Quite amazingly, you have also let everyone else know what you are about .... did you really spend all that time researching, calculating and posting?

I haven't read the threads from 2001 .... can't be 4rsed in all honesty.

lol dont judge us all by your own standards Pete ...it took all of 2 mins to type "pslewis" & "age" into the search facility

& even I, with my low level of math can work out a d.o.b
