**** Link? Random Light Generator, you mean?

No, never saw the use of impressing the 13 year old chavs in MacDonalds Car Park on a Friday night ...... so didn't bother with one.

Appaling misuse of what is a performance model !

Purchased no doubt in the vain hope of being seen as more youthful

Pete should clearly have gone for a volvo v40

V40's far too streamlined

I was thinking more

And that far on a set of brake pads should be made illegal...

Pete, How's your bright light holding up? My MY99 bright light has taken a bit of a hammering over the years what with our changeable climate but still seems to be going strong. I hope your MY00 is bearing up as well.

Reading this with interest. Not sure about the whole reliability thing with Subaru. I have had plenty of issues, but to be honest I put up with them because of the way the car goes.

I have an MY05 Wagon with PPP which now has 35,000 miles, bought from a dealership ex-demo with 3,000 miles. Serviced by the book... and so far I have had:

1 x set rear shocks - the old knocking rear shocks (they all do that sir) replaced under warranty
3 x rear diffs - first replaced under warranty because of diff whine at 62 MPH (surprise, they all do that sir) second destroyed itself because it was fitted incorrectly by the dealership, driveshafts not fully engaged
2 x sets front tires - not just from enthusiastic driving, but because of alignment problems (no sir - they all get a full alignment check when they come off the boat so not really my problem) which when checked by specialists were not even close to the recommended settings.

And now I have knocking from the front offside and (maybe) steering box so I know that I am going to be looking at bills again.

I drive it quick when conditions allow but never recklessly or without brain engaged - I have never had a point on my license, so I don't feel that I have abused it.

Swiss watch - not as such IMHO.

You bought an ex-demo ..... big mistake I'm afraid.

Those 3,000 miles were driven like a getaway driver and destoys the lifelong reliability.

My car, however, was run in as carefully as I could manage ..... even now, with 94,000 miles on it, it very rarely gets over 3000 RPM. No need to thrash the thing.

Rubbish. My old classic was an ex-demo had tek3 decat etc later on, n was still running strong @ 65K until a woman killed it at a junction. Up until then all it needed were some MAF's n some new HT leads.

Pete's car has been so reliable because he believes in filling it with the highest quality lubricants money can buy, no expense spared when it comes to oil selection.

Sorry, but why buy an ex-demonstrator. Surely you know that they are ragged from cold, not run in etc. by the fcukwits at the dealers to impress potential buyers. They just knock a couple grand off and sell on. then when things break (usually out of warranty)..... makes you wonder.

I'd NEVER buy an ex-demonstrator car - says it all in the title "demonstrator" i.e. what the car will do regardless of care for the new un run in car.

Rant over

this is a really mental thread--- really can't see the point of it.

I'm an old bugger too, compared to some on here- jeez- I bought the imprezza to go fast and have fun..... if you can't afford to put petrol in it, its not the car for you.

but my imprezza has been 100% perfect too: with a disc and pad change at 54K- because I like to be super safe.

and I'm not a skin flint.

btw- still laughing about the million dollar looking calibre- you're having a laugh surely.

they were crap in the 90's and nothing has happened to improve them.

easily pleased aren't we. The old t1t has never had me in his pocket as u put it, don't know where you get that idea from. I know exactly his type and the way he deliberately likes to try n start an argument. I have never risen to it, only taken part

Stop mocking the Calibra, my (70 yr old) mum loves hers (J reg) and refuses to get rid of it :-)

On the other point, I rarely needed new pads, as I'm not heavy on the brakes, but decided to change the calipers on my '99 car this year, as most of the pistons had seized - chap at the garage thought lack of use had done them in.

No point in having these cars and not using them....within reason.

I have treated the car as you have indicated, done nothing more - nothing less.

Not played with it, modified it or thrashed it ..... just done with it what it says on the tin.

It has towed boats, campers - even pulled cars out of ditches. It has show a clean rear to most vehicles when let go to sprint. It has carried 5 adults and a Dog and a TopBox.

OK, the petrol consumption is a bit scary at 30mpg - but I can suffer that.

It has not put a foot wrong, has had two sets of brake pads and is still on the original rear discs ... original clutch, engine and gearbox.

Excellent car, good value and the fastest thing in my street
Pah 94000, hardly run in

I did 180000 in my classic over 9 years driven hard and fast every day, bullet proof motors

I'm looking forward to getting into the 100,000's of miles.

There's something special about owning an elderly, low value car .... especially if you have owned since new

Just to throw my 2p's worth in - I've had my STi Spec D for 2 1/2 years from new and just about to hit 80,000 miles. Its been driven hard, but done its share of motorway miles as well, never missed a beat, but then it does get 3 services a year SO whether it takes 9 years or 3 year to hit 90,000 miles then Imprezas are reliable if looked after. Oh, one set of front discs and two sets front pads, one set of rear pads.

This is backed up by the 45,000 miles I did in my MY98 Turbo, 100,000 in my MY00 Turbo PPP, 60,000 in my MY03 STi PPP and 50,000 in my 04 WRX PPP. Apart from a blown engine at 95,000 in the MY00. Of course any niggles (which aren't many) tend to be sorted under warranty . All owned from new.

Oh, and a 56 plate STi Spec D at 80,000 probably ain't worth much anyway

Gareth

Glad to see that most are as reliable as I have experienced ...... I suspect the failures are generally due to modifying and lack of services?

I think modifying is ok, as long as done correctly within the parameters of the engines capabilities.

I always made sure my Scoob was serviced every 6 months (albeit by a specialists and not myself as I didn't have the knowledge back then that I do now). That usually tied in with about 6-7000 miles so nice and safe. Decent oem products and she drove like a dream (except for dead gearbox - high mileage).

More reliable than my current 205, but thats easier to work on for a novice
