Calling you electronics wizards and ScoobyNet Pioneers
#31
I'm no electronics expert but what i'd like is this.
Any movement of the car rings my mobile phone and using a mini-camera conveys pics to my mobile.I then look to see whats going on ,if its being nicked i then ring back my car and disable it,ie cut off fuel.
Points to note.
1.Only possible when we have use of mobiles that transmit pictures,....still some way off.
2.A good alarm should stop most thieves anyway. What this does is alert you to the fact that something dodgy is happening.Allows you to keep a 'remote' eye on your car.
This has already been mentioned but the biggest problem is that once mass produced then thieves can 'work out' ways round it.

Hi,
Just thinking about the idea that Pete Lewis had really... how hard would it be to make a remote engine cut-off, i.e. via mobile phone? Would it be possible to get a pay-as-you-go and modify it such that it arms the immobiliser in the car, cutting the engine and triggering the alarm? (i.e. could you somehow take a feed from the phones ringing system and use that as a signal?)
I would be willing to pay someone to develop that ( I think ) but it would be great if ScoobyNet could pioneer such a system (what do you think Webby? ), that would be the dogs b0ll0x if ScoobyNet could produce a system for the community by the community (and of course the Cosworth and Evo, Skyline dudes can join in, but it's more expensive for them )
What do you think?
Matt.

An interesting debate. The thing is to keep within the law and try and cover as many theft scenarios as possible. These will vary from the stolen from supermarket car park to the horror armed break in "hand over the keys".
So it strikes me that you need a flexible deterrent that can be driver determined depending on circumstances. In the car park theft you would want the car not to be taken at all but in the armed robbery it would probably be sensible to let the low life drive off at least for a mile or so.
Now I am not an elecronics anorak so the following maybe totally impractical. But suppose you had a little programmable black box linked to the engine management system that either controlled fuel flow or engine rpm on a time related basis. What would happen is this.
Scene 1) Driver goes shopping, parks up and sets box so engine will not start if tried thus preventing opportunist theft.
Scene 2) Driver gets home for evening, parks in drive and doesn’t plan to go out till morning. He sets box so that engine starts fine but after a selected time deterrent kicks in and, say, restricts rpm to 700 or whatever (or restricts fuel flow). The armed robber would be well down the road but suddenly find that the car was slowing and not much more use to him. An "extra" feature could be a link to the horn which would sound continuously thus making the robber even more determined to dump the car and get away pdq. Sure he might take it out on the car but it would prevent him travelling far and might even avoid use of the vehicle in a joy ride thrash or robbery. If the owner were concerned that the thief might come back and seek revenge then he still has the choice of not using this option. An additional benefit could be that this option was used albeit with a higher rpm control if you don’t trust your local service garage not to thrash the engine during a test run!
Obviously driver has key or code to override box settings.
If this has been suggested a 1000 times before point me to my coat please and accept my apologies.
Just my Euro's worth. David.
Edited to add horn feature!

Looks like i will be getting the soldering iron out to the cupboard full of ZAP pagers and see if the sounder output can be modified to switch a transistor plus some other bits to opperate a relay to cut the fuel pump out, im not to worried about the legal side to much at the moment because **** them its our car not theirs and hopefully it's going to slow down then stop, Pay as you go 98% uk coverage so that might be an idea!!
**** me i just forgot the zap pagers have a vibrate motor in them now that makes things a bit more simpler.
