Advice re: mapping classic STI

Lisa, your car has 280PS (276bhp) as standard. Your OEM TMIC is prob gonna allow you 300-320bhp, until the ACT's start to go haywire.

As mentioned, the cheapest way in for the ECU would be a 2nd hand Apexi PFC. Keep checking on here and eBay. There're a few on eBay at the mo for around the £450 mark (can't remember if the optional Commander is included in that price though...).

Recommended pre-remap supporting mods are:-

- Walbro 255 fuel pump
- Fresh fuel filter
- Fresh air filter (but you already have an IK fitted )
- NGK PFR7B plugs
- Decat downpipe
- Check age/condition of engine oil/level!

Finally make sure you have a fresh amount of your chosen fuel type in the tank. The higher its octane, the greater the power/torque gains. So if you have decent day-to-day access to a Shell garage, then by all means stick V-Power 99 in there.

Finally, you dont have to travel for your remap - there's a very competent mapper who comes to you: Jolly Green Monster. I believe he charges £250 +VAT (so £288 before October), to remap a PFC.

You won't regret it - the raised boost/ign/fuelling means v. enjoyable, grin-inducing extra drivabilty/power/torque...

Really helpful post there, thanks.

I live in NI though so we don't get V-Power here. Our highest is 97 ron. Will have a look at those ECU's on ebay. Need to get the hesitation sorted out first.

97 RON is fine (any RON is fine actually, as it will be optimumally mapped for with repesect to its threshold to detonation ).

Yes, defo make sure that the engine is running perfectly before ever attempting to place more stress on it, by modding/remapping.

I had new un equal headers put on me car yesterday, dont understand why its now quieter than before, used to sound great,

Unequal ones means that the exhaust pulses from the 2 bottom-most cylinders 'collide' with the pulses form the 2 top-most cylinders during any given cycle, hence the Scooby 'burble'.

Equal length ones (as fitted to most in-line engines) mean the pulses 'line-up' behind each other, hence the smoother, 'quieter' sound.

Thing is mate, when the revs rise, surely your car starts to wail like a sportsbike, to compensate?

sounds like mondeo, do headers run in?

tomr555 got same headers hes gutted too.
someone said they coke up thenget better,
wheres the noise gone

he still has unequal should be the same mine was when i put mine on sounded even more like a scooby lol

right as i 1st suspected car runs fine at 1.1 bar peaking at 1.25 bar. had it tested on the road with proper piece of kit and wideband reading 14 ish on tickover 23 on overrun and 12 when on boost driving etc some times saw 10 when dumping fuel after shut off. so that ruins the general myths. its a fact my v3 sti all is fine so if it breaks it will be something else that causes it. i am not saying per cylinder its spot on but i very much doubt its running lean on 1 off them. so like i say you cant compere the wrx to sti cars. they run far diffrent straight out of the factory and are built better. 300bhp is not a problem for them the horror storys are from failures or things that have gone wrong else where then reared ugly head later.

Ok, now have you had your car on a rolling road and checked it with det cans? have you ensured that the fuelling is 100%?

Your saying things you cannot prove max, go search from 2000 onwards, there are lots of threads on why these cars go bang, mainly messing and not controlling the likes of fuelling, egt's going through the roof etc, it has not ruined any myths because the myths are actual facts, paid with peoples money on why engine x failed etc.
Go speak with the mappers, give Bob Rawle a call, he has been mapping these cars for a good 10+ years, link ecu's, motec 800's, ecutek etc, but dont preach what has already been proven to kill engines on here

As with my above, your still not controlling the fuelling, it only takes a little bit of leaning out to melt that piston, hence why people have been using link ecu's, motec's, ecutek etc, in over 9 years on this board i have seen most of it, classic STI's back in 2000/2001 with rebuilds to run over 350bhp (and its still pretty true), these pioneers did all the hard work for us (Steve McCullock, Craig H, Saj etc), but its your car, do what you want with it, just dont give bad advice, it costs people alot of money hence we say go for an after market ecu for a reason.

@Ami, I've had a scoob before - a 95 wrx. She was running about 280bhp and I really wanna get this one to the 300 mark. I'm not a bad driver already, but I did put my WRX on her roof in a field so maybe those rally lessons would be a good idea.
hi lisa if i was you with the mods you are going to put on your scoob i recomend you do remap it for safe reasons if nothing else i use a fella called andy c you will find him on here he has done all my subarus an ive never had a problem i had a 93 estate last year an with a few mods an his mapping i was running at 302bhp 300fpt an the car was all safe only boosting at 1.2bar hope this helps

Just an update to let you all know that I went and bought an Autronic SM4 ECU. Can't exactly afford it, lol, but figured it would be a better idea to throw all my money at the best ECU. Thanks for all your advice.

how much did you pay for that ecu, i an i think simtec is the best ecu for the money i.e 1000 and that inlcudeds your fitting and two map settings

just to let you know my car still working fine. i swapped ecu to a mines unit about 800 miles ago and sounds better now more cracks and pops. still using 99 octane fuel and the car does work very hard. i would have thought over 40 6k launchs and top end action. maybe i was just lucky. (touching wood now)
