Was the MY99 the best of the breed? - discuss

Have had a MY99 for 2 years now. Had a MY97 before and the newer car was slightly more refined but didn't spoil the 'raw racer' feel.
I could have hung on for the MY00, but wasn't that impressed. Yep, the colour coding was nice but the newer wheel design didn't appeal. I agree with the comments that MY99 was the best 'out-of-the-showroom' standard UK Impreza.
Mine is being sold this weekend after 2 years of totally trouble-free ownership...... I know its going to break my heart seeing it driven away![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)

Re the gearbox - wasn't it that on some cars it jumped out of 5th gear and as such there was a 5th gear mod done, standard on the MY00 but a warranty fix if the 99 did it??????

Q. did the MY99 have the fantastic 'Bright' button on the dash???
V. important this!!!!.
I dont think my MY00 wagon has any ecu probs. doesn't 'fly off' from low revs, need to sit on about 2.5k to 'leap away', been suggested I should look at which ecu I have...i.e black/ green etc (don't really know), but if I wanted a new ecu, where would I get it from????
cheers

I have a MY00 (company car) and my wife has a MY99. I have posted before on this, but can definitely report that the MY99 is the faster of the two in terms of mid range acceleration and by quite some margin as well.
I also think the MY99 alloys look better than the MY00.
We had the MY99 colour coded so it looks pretty good all round.
Regards,
tiggers.

Re: the jumping out of 5th gear.
This was (apparently) a problem for some MY00's including mine.
The stake nut that holds the 5th gear in place on the input shaft works loose, causing 5th gear to wander back and forth on the shaft. This causes the car to pop out of 5th gear very occasionally.
Not really that big a deal, but likely to lead to major problems later if left unchecked.
I had mine fixed under warranty (ie no cost to me) and have had no problems since.![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
It's not a 5th gear "mod" as such. It's a fault correction.
Subtle difference I know, but if you have a MY00 which doesn't pop out of 5th, then don't worry - you're not missing out on some performance gear box modification, your box was built correctly in the first place.

I bought a 6 month old MY99 in July 2000 because I didn't want a MY00 (mainly for the wheels to be honest). Seems that subsequently I was proven to have made a fortunate purchase.
Sold it last week though - 21,000 miles in 18 months and no problems (none of this surging, etc) although it did have a warranty clutch. Judging by everyone else's comments, yes the MY99 was best but everyone's sold them recently... must be loads available secondhand then, depressing values. What a bargain the next lucky punters will have!

I don't know where to put my Dawes on the camper, can you come and fit it for me? What performance increase can I expect? Will I need a DP to go with it? Do aerodynamics have any effect?
Brown is definitely the best colour![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

PS John, do you recognise where this is?

From an unbiased viewpoint, the MY99 is the best car, cos it's as new as I could afford at the time ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
I can vouch for longevity as well,(touches lots of wooden things) cos it's got 72k on it.
Runs sweeter now than ever, had it dyno'd at 60k with healthy 237bhp/225lbft figures. only a itg filter to enhance on standard spec, BP SUL.
And of course RED IS FASTER THAN ALL THE OTHER COLOURS.

I've been giving this a lot of thought since the Integra was sold last week. Have to say, the ‘Teg was awesome for a naturally aspirated front driver, but on reflection, I miss the Scoob more ![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
With the exception of the P1, it seems to me that the MY99 was the most complete UK Scoob in standard form – perhaps the ultimate of its "old model" type?
Not thinking of what the best car for mods was, just from the point of view of an out the box car to be left in largely standard form. I’ve excluded the P1 on the grounds of cost and limited edition status – lol and it was an STI5
Engine/drivetrain
The MY99 had the more powerful phase 2 engine, unlike earlier cars, but generally with none of the (now confirmed by others on other threads) ECU bugs and performance shortfalls that seem to have effected the MY00 cars. MY00 had different ECU and many owners report lack of power. Less of the piston slap problems of the MY98 cars as well.
Less of the kick of the bigger turbo older cars, but ultimately just as fast, if not faster.
In most independent performance tests, the MY99 was the fastest of all the UK Scoobs, although how much of the test data can be taken with a pinch of salt is open to question.
Shorter throw gear change than earlier cars.
And the 4 pot brakes, better but not great![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Body/Interior
MY99 had the better dash layout and interior that was introduced with the MY98, but also had the higher STI4 wing which was IMHO the best looking standard fit wing, especially from behind. More attractive wheel design than the MY00 cars. No colour coding of mirrors and door handles as per MY00, but then coded door handles scratch in use anyway.
Suspension
The MY99 had updated (firmer) suspension as standard than MY98 and earlier cars. Having driven both, I much preferred the set up on the MY99.
Just my thoughts.
I ran an MY99 for nearly 2 years and 30,000 miles. Consider myself privileged![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Anyone agree?

I have a MY00 with a MY99 ECU and it goes much better now
.I also think the 5 spoke alloys are better.
I would try and get either of them if at the right money.I think the later UK cars do miss the kick of the earlier cars(always like the r&s reg cars),but as they have firmer suspension,4 pot brakes and larger rear wing are a better package.
after chasing a few eibach spring cars on track,I do not think the later cars need them as much as the earlier cars.

Had an MY00 before my current MY01. I only drove an MY99 briefly, but honestly can't say I noticed much difference. Sure, the '99 was a little soggier having been, um, enjoyed by its previous owner while I had the '00 from new. But that's it.
The 00 had no ECU problems and in the 20,000 odd miles I did in it never missed a beat. The handles didn't scratch either. Plus, of course, it had map reading lights as has been pointed out before.![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
It looked the mutts nuts and went much too well enough, even in standard trim (contract hire). All in all I was a happy bunny.
![](http://www.schoolboost.com/4Mark/oldfaithful.jpg)
The MY01 is a better car (although that may not be a popular comment) in most ways. It's butt ugly, for sure, but then again when did anyone buy a Scoob on it's prettiness? It goes even better, especially afer being breathed on (NOT contract hire
) and handles better than the MY00 ever did, especially with LEDA B. It's better made, too. All in all a more complete car.
Is it as much fun?
Yes. But the '00 seemed to plug straight into the fun receptors, while the '01 takes a little longer to connect.
Edited to add picture. OK, so I miss her a bit.![](http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/whinging.gif)
