The Summer Bikers are out....

An early Blade will get to 130 140 pretty quick then starts to gasp a bit
Later gsxr1000 and R1s good for 150 160
Busa ,Blackbird,ZX12 will see 180 but they arent sportsbikes .ZZR 14 i would guess is the same but havent ridden one.
Those are real world speeds not from magazines if that helps. Most big bikes should be able to get to 120 140 within that mile between the roundabouts

im not a summer rider, had to ride my gixxer to work in the snow etc and havent not used it everyday since september last yr,on my private race track detour in the mornings i often see 150,it certainly does better than a coffee.
altho the tarmac underneath me certainly wouldnt do me any favours if i fell off,but i except that

Are you guys saying that a big bike would only get to 140 in a mile? my car is doing 130 - 135 in a quarter mile and that is from a standing start. surely they must be a helluva lot faster than that.

No argument with that, there is a time and a place for opening up a sports bike and through a 30mph zone is not one of them.
I've had one of my sports bikes flat out and not going into the speed or location but it wasn't something I particularly enjoyed and did it as an experience to see what it was like and that was it. It was effectively tunnel vision and if bikers do that sort of speed regularly then they are idiots as you have zero reaction time at that speed and the braking distances needed are big. I didn't do it again and have since stopped riding altogether as the risks with having kids was too much of a risk.

I only wound my ZX12R up once, it was a very fast bike and as B2Zero says, it wasn't that enjoyable anyway and the feeling that the safety margins were very much reduced and also that if something did go wrong your chances were minimal was very strong.
The big advantage of a bike is the way that you can filter through traffic and the undeniable pleasure of the feel of riding it. You really have to ride defensively these days to save your skin though.

I find them sh1ty scooters with a lawn mower engine driven by hoodies more anoying, don't mind the sound of a proper bike. It's funny because when i was younger was always faffing about on scramblers over the park and stuff. Now i got some lads near me who come blasting it along on quads and scramblers, and i sometimes look out the window and im thinking and on occasion shout out, fookin Tossers go and play somewhere else.

I was trying to give realistic figures.I dont doubt the new R6 can manage 170 but it will be on an airfield on track conditions with a rider who weighs about 8 stone .Those are the figures magazines and manufacturers quote.
My early R6 was starting to struggle at about 130.It would go a bit quicker but its of no use for road riding .
The point of the bike was the way it got to 120 and the way it handled.
Pretty academic the top speed for most people .Unless you think its ok and safe to ride at 150mph on public roads in the UK?

An R6 topping out at 130? The bike I referred to earlier to taking flat out was a ZX6-R and that was a very long way on from 130 (at the end of the clocks) and way faster than I ever took my R1/GSXR/Fireblade. Obviously the speed I saw was only indicated and I will never know the true speed but I doubt indicated speed is any more than 10mph out from true speed.
Of course no one should be doing those speeds on public roads but it doesn't mean people don't, and between roundabouts on dual carriageways is where you will find most that do those speeds doing them.

It had a bit more than 130 but not a lot and not by me(it was a 99 model)!
My Blade showed about 150 but struggled past 140.Then i couldnt really see due to turbulance, wind resistance etc
I rode a Blackbird which was far comfier at high cruising speeds .Not the same as a sports bike though
The bikes had race cans on as well which sounded very nice

a 99 r6 should easily see the 150mark,easily,if it dont,it has a nice stubby race can without a PC !!
or you weigh 18 stone ?
anyway,we digress

I think the point is it will whizz up to 130mph pretty rapidly, bit from that point onwards, the aceleration drops off. Meaning it needs a pretty long and clear straight to go any faster; Which was my point with the z500; it could be irked on to 120 possibly even 130mph if given enough road, but for all intents 110mph was all it would realistically see.....there aren't many tracks out there witha 5 mile empty and flat straight, head down, elbows in

Cheers Ali-B at least you got it
Nothing wrong with that R6 or the Blades but if you really need a 150 plus bike get a Busa ,ZX12 or Blackbird
I suppose you could buy a 94 ZZR600 with a dodgy speedo though
Im not 18 stone either

I am a biker, and i am surrounded by countyside so i confess i do go out for spirited rides, but when i come to a village i do stick to the speed limit, but i still get nasty looks from people as bikes often sound like they are going faster than they are....
on the flip side a loud bike is often safer than a quiet one as people can hear you coming, you would be surprised the amount of car drivers that dont see bikers, but with a loud pipe at least they can hear you

But then there are people on here who have forgotten more about Scoobs, and bikes, than spudgun has managed to accumulate in his, I'd say, nearly 6 years on this planet ....
