I wholeheartedly agree. If ever I'm intending to fly I choose to get on an aircraft. It's just that they seem to be purpose-built for the job, with wings, engines, and landing-gear and all that. I think a bus or a motorcycle or one of those uppy-downy railway bogie carriages would just careen into the bushes at the end of the runway.

+ the Turkish DC-10 ex ORY to LHR in 74
Lost Cargo Door Brings Down DC-10 in Paris

Cargo Door again, MD properly messed this up and bodged it after the 1st accident, only after the Turkish one went down did they totally redesign the door locking mechanism.

I'm sure NAT21 once said (not that long ago) the AA ex ORD engine fell off on take off because it wasn't replaced properly after a major service.

Yup; and I don't think all have them have been fixedyet (should have been done by 2008) and it seems the rectified components are showing to have quality control issues as well.

Bearing in mind airline operators and Boeing has "officially" known about it since 1997, you'd think they might have sorted it by now.

Thats a horrifying accident. Its the sort of thing aircrew wake up screaming in the night about.

Looks like apart from the hydraulic failure which may well have affected the flying controls, he was probably below safety speed or even the crit speed which would have been high because of the high weight. The sharp roll towards the lost engine indicates loss of control because of insufficient control of the asymmetrical problem with the live engine at max power. This could be due to loss of the effectiveness of the flying controls, or insufficent speed to get sufficient rudder control.

Its a situation which you can do nothing to save!
