I have recently bought a Specialized enduro pro carbon , was planing on getting something around £400-£500 , ended up spending a little more than that lol , its a great bike , I only live 20 mins away from Afan Argoed so have been going up there the last few sundays , and out 3 times a week locally , my route in the week is about 60% road 40% track , I'm really enjoying it ,

hi guys, sorry to hi jack this thread, But have you tried Ribble bikes in Preston. They have a special edition bikes at excellent prices. They will basically custom build you a bike thats fits your body weight/frame size, for well under £700 quid and there review got 4 1/2 / 5 stars on the bikeradar.com
The only reason I didn't get one is because i'm quite tall and they didn't have my frame size and I needed it sooner than they could supply it. I got a Focus Cayo 105 in the end,
I would give them i go but make usre you visit them in person, there internet site can be a bit dodgy, as in they get things wrongs, now again. Just don't trust it!! Go there in person!

There was a Ribble in the bike shed today full carbon with Ultegra Jewellry, was lovely, will be on my list come cycle to work scheme renewal time, but depends whether I go for an MTB instead, already have a hybrid, dont know which way to jump !

Check BikeRadar - a lot are having bad experiences with Ribble. Planet X seems to be the shop of choice.
J4CKO - go for full on road bike - it's SO fun. Just hammered it on my little morning 12 miler - a great way to wake up!

Some tool pulled out on me this morning, bloke in some tragic mini poeple carrier, head glued to his phone, he made the car coming the other way slam on, me slam on, really is a menace people driving on mobiles.

I nearly got flattened on my bike the other day at a roundabout. Said to Dave I will be wearing a fluorescent jacket next time I go out, but I doubt that makes much difference!

J4CKO - I have to cycle up a dual carriageway - it's about 250 yards long and quite an uphill slog. Cars and vans often leave too little room as they hammer past (while I'm struggling to get 8mph!). Drives me rather mad. This morning wasn't too bad though. Temped to cycle right in the middle of the lane - we are after all "allowed" to.

Well my consultant wasn't that happy with my knee and that peed me off so I've yet to buy one.
I've held the Specialized one and sat on it but not done the deal. Would be nice if someone said, if you take it today you can have it for £500 etc. But it doesn't seem like they have too much trouble shifting them.....and the 2010 models are more expensive.
I also think the colour is a bit dull.

I think you've got to weight up its use.
a racing bike is just that. you're going out, very little kit on and training hard.
if you want something to commute on, you want better rims, mudguards, panniers- so it will take more weight.
all these super light bikes with razor thin tyres are all very well- but in the real world of cycling in crap, gutter debris etc etc..... I don't think you'll do well on them.
a lot of my friends find them a bit twitchy and a bit sketchy- especially if you've some height to you.
having said that-I'd be looking on ebay- £500 will buy you a lot of someone else ruined fantasy of being the next lance armstrong ! most of them have never been used
i'd be seriously tempted by the lidl offer if I didn't have so many bikes already !!!!

I'm fully aware I dont need one, I'm a bloke......it's a toy, and gives me a reason do dress up in garish kit!

Adding another bike to look at is not helping Matt!
It'll be one of those 3 listed, prob the specialized....just might wait until my knee progrsses a little more....or next time I walk past the shop!

Clare, for the sake of a tenner and lookign a bit Motorway maintenance its worth getting a hi viz, I have a Decathlon "Gillet" type thing and more often than not I will wear it as on a black bike wearing black gear even my pasty white legs dont produce enough visibility, drivers notice you a long way off and I can tell the difference when I wear it as they dotn arrive behind you as quickly, its no substitute for being vigilant and assuming they have not seen you but it does make a diffference, as do lights, I had both this morning as it was overcast and a bit rainy, if nothing else if you do get knocked off and its someone else fault you can demonstrate in court that you took your safety seriously to be seen yet the other person still didnt see you.

as you people seem to know your bikes and i know **** all i could do with some advice i have been thinking about getting a bike to go out on after work when i dont feel like the gym !! i dont have alot of money 200-300 max and im not the smallest of blokes im 6ft and about 15-16 stone if any one could point out a good buy that would be great

I'm glad to see this thread as have been wondering about road bikes myself. Have you had a look at the Felt F95? Seems well reviewed and good value for £600ish. I like the look of them but it's probably to racey for what I want/need.
My usage would be occasional commuting and leisurely road rides perhaps with a few rougher tracks, so would probably suit a hybrid best as I'd like some comfort, but I definitely want drop bars. My old man has just got a Specialized Tricross Sport which is the sort of thing I'd like but would prefer to spend a bit less, more like £500 tops. Quite happy to buy 2nd hand as I can't get cycle-to-work. When I rode his Tricross I liked everything about it except that I couldn't move to standing on the pedals comfortably as it felt a bit cramped somehow. Any alternative suggestions for me?
