I think I share EBRWRX's thought's here, likewise I don't go out to be a racist but now, having read this thread I see it could come accross as I might be.
I don't want to offend anyone so I'll try and alter how I say things.
Razz, was it you I met at Warrington, was I not polite and courteous(sp?).

I am very sorry to hear that you're a Jap, especially because it implies that you have a small ***** and could get made fun of by white women.
However, look at the bright side of things, you live in a well-organized country, probably the best in the world, with good weather and lots of fast cars, hundreds of tuning companies etc. OK, your house is small and you work all day, but there's still the weekends and the nice food (as long as they cut that fish the right way, you know which one I mean )
But it's a small word, and if you feel like eating greasy fish and having a pint that will spill over your hand, you can still take a flight to Heathrow and visit us...

I am from mixed parentage.
My mother is from Trinidad and my father is from Scotland.
I was born and brought up in Scotland and so consider myself to be a Scot.
I have, however, been called numerous things over the years.
Personally, I find terms such as "Paki" and "******" to be particularly offensive.
The context and venom with which these terms have directed at me in the past have left me with no doubts whatsoever that they are meant to be insulting.
Call me "Jock" and I wouldn't bat an eyelid.
Why? - because there is more than a subtle difference between "Paki, ******, Chinky, Jap, Spick etc etc" and "Brit, Jock, Aussie etc"
In a modern society, is it not unreasonable to expect others to appreciate and respect these differences?

This, IMHO, is not something that we should be joking about. It is a topic near to many people's hearts and something that a lot of people have been on the receiving end of.
I can see why Andy's upset by this. This is just pathetic trivialisation of a very serious issue and it saddens me to read this.
If you accept racism, you're perpetuating it.
The original poster had no intention of being racist, and was upset that people thought he was. He was going to edit his post, but Shaun got there first.
This post has changed my views. It's not just PC-gone-mad, it's a real problem.

Jesus, only just started this thread and all I can say is - the mere number of views and replies on this has made it a far bigger issue than it should have been. A handful of people take offence to what they "perceive" another persons wording to mean.
I dont use the word chinky when talking about a chinese takeaway but I dont think there is anything wrong with it - as far as I can see it is a shortening of a commonly used term like chippy for chip shop. If people take it that way then surely thats their issue. I seriously cant believe people are getting so worked up over a word.
Most people see ****** as offensive due to its origin - nowadays (mainly due to rap one would suggest) it is seen as far less offensive and usually mainly as reference by a black person in regard to a black friend. Is this a step forward or a step backward - is it ok for black people to use this term and not for others? We even have the term whigger now?

This has probably been said before. The reason why people like Andy and find terms like *****/paki(whether referred to as a shop or person) offensive is because they were used throughout our younger years as offensive terms. They were used by the yob just before he smashed your window/chased you down the street. The terms themselves imply such a gross level of ignorance as paki is used to refer to anyone with brown skinetc. How stupid would you think I was if I called a group of English guys a bunch of bloody frogs/krauts just because they are all white??
I am not one of the pc crew, and consider myself British(proudly) but people must remember that these terms have been used offensively and violently against us for years.
