There are no racist words, only actions. It's like a gun, it's not dangerous, but put it in the hands of someone irresponsible or vindictive or racist, then it becomes so.
I'm welsh (don't laugh! ), and for years have had to listen to "sheep sh@gger" "taff" etc. but all in jest. I have heard people being racist in the extreme without using any of the so called racist words described in this thread.
Aussie is not racist, so why is Paki? I don't mean to trivialise the hatred and menace that has been behind usage of these words over the years, but they are harmless in the right context. I work with people from differing ethnic origins, some even refer to themselves as Pakis or whatever, and some you wouldn't dream of mentioning it in front of. So does that make the word racist? No, but some people find it offensive, but that is true of many things. Someone earlier mentioned that ****** is now becoming common is usage between blacks. Fine, but if I say it I'm labelled a racist. That in itself is racism!
This thread just shows what a confusing minefield the subject of racism has become, and we are all in danger of getting to the point where nobody says anything for fear of offending someone.
Geezer

Wow, I am actually happy that there is enough interest that so many have stood up to be counted - whichever side of the debate you take.
<rant mode>
IMHO, it is NOT PC to not use terms that offend others, it is common courtesy and the most base level of respect that we should show to others!
Why can't people just do the right thing: show respect for your fellow man. If that means changing some of the so called "colloquiallisms" (that still are slurs no matter how you look at it), what's the fuss? No one is cutting a bit out of you, or limiting your right to free speech - just like we all have the right to breath clean air, we have the right to be free of the bad old days of ignorance and racial hatred (immortalised in those "shortened" words).
Adding a few syllables is not going to cause you or your friends injury!!
Wouldn't it be nice if Scoobynet (Subies are JAPANESE cars after all) could lead the way out of this morass.
</rant mode>
Peace to y'all

Careful chaps - you are all in danger of ending up like us (bog trotting) paddies. Over here is is OK for a jaffa (protestant) or a taig(Catholic) to call a taig a taig, but if a brit(soldier) calls a taig a taig he is more than likely to meet with some violence in the very near future. Similarly, jaffas and brits can call brits brits, but if a taig calls a brit a brit he will most likely end up getting arrested.

My common law wife ran a Chinese takeaway on behalf of her parents as a teenager, despite the long hours and holding down a "day job" = A levels. She became a medical student.
Now she is a Consultant at a prestigous London teaching hospital, I have asked her and her Chinky mates if she mind the phrase "Chinky".
I have also asked my Chinese extraction students, awesome students work tooooo hard!
Apparently it boils down to context.
If Chinky is followed by disparaging comments then bad........if followed by positive then good
As genetically a Norwegian: "Viking *******" is whatever the context

Just noticed you said
"The reason why people like Andy and find terms like *****/paki(whether referred to as a shop or person) offensive is because they were used throughout our younger years as offensive terms."
In English, we say the reason why ... is THAT ..., not BECAUSE
Geezer
maybe if you people stopped ******** sheep, we would stop calling you sheep ********!

I've been in a same situation in Saxo Sports Club where as some tw@t referred that going down the Chinky takeaway is a friendly way to say Chinese takaway. I replied back with a bit of lecture and had some really rude replies back like 'self rightious *****' and the worst "this is our country and we can call them what we want so dont tell me what to say".
I was not impressed of course and am very sad to see it happened here in the Scoobynet. Very dissappointed.

I know how bad Andy Tang feels because I felt just as bad when I saw those replies on the SSC forums.
Some people here WILL NEVER see our point of view and some will consider this as a joke or think its just a minor problem.

Claudius,
I assume your pedantic post was in some way to suggest that due to a slight gramatical error Seep Singh was some how less British ???
Wasn't particularly funny and not particularly clever if that was the intention.
Don't be an ar$e.
As for the rest, yes, this is a serious subject, but a little humerous banter between protagonists (SP?) does not make light of it and surely does no harm.

Agreed - black coffee is black coffee (in my book anyway.)
However, some people still don't seem to appeciate the difference between a term like "Jock" and a term like "*****".
I know of no Scottish person (including myself, my family, my friends, my school friends or my work mates) who would be offended by being called a "Jock".
Clearly, though, "*****" is offensive.
It's not all "PC gone mad" - there is a basic level of respect that anyone should be entitled to.

Diablo,
No, that was not the first intention. It annoys me because so many people make that mistake, all over the world in English speaking countries.
However, it could come across that way as a side effect.
You know, I just like to be able to express myself freely with a little humour. I use words like Pakie, Brit, Aussie, ***** (with the accent! ) but never mean to be superior to someone because of something as superficial as skin colour. I have all sorts of acquaintances from all different kinds of racial / cultural backgrounds and we laugh a lot about racism by calling each other these names.

Claudius were you trying to make some kind of point regarding my mistype and command of the english language/education?I really d'ont need correction from you as I'm probably educated to a far superior level than you old chap. How about this for starters?
1)MBBS,(Gold prize winner) London. This is a degree in Medicine(in case you did'nt know.)
2)BSc(Hons)Physiology.Done concurrently with my medical degree
3)FRCA Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists
4)Dip ICM Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine
Currently I'm a Senior Registrar in Paediatric Intensive Care at Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children.
All this can be confirmed as I am listed on the GMC register.
Please feel free to correct any grammatical/spelling errors because as you can see I need educating.I w'ont mention that I also achieved A grades in Eng lang and lit at O'level as that would just be showing off!!I wonder if you would have tried to correct my English if I was the Doc looking after your critically ill child. Some how I doubt it.
As for your so called black/asian friends who you have a laugh with, may I suggest they actually think you are an ignorant ****?I have never met you but I imagine you are the sort of person people just tolerate because they have to.
Also please note that no matter what you write in reply to this I shall not enter into any further discussion with you.I have got to where I am in life so that I d'ont have to interact with your kind(most of the time!)
My I apologise to all the regular bbs crew for my outburst. In 18 months of being here I have never once thought it necessary to enter into such an exchange before.I used to like this board because your colour/job/money did'nt matter just as long as you were passionate about cars.Where have all these idiots come from?

I am sorry that you look at it this way. I have never questioned your professional qualifications! Neither have I said that you have not been to school or university. It is, however, a shame that someone with your number of diplomas (please note I didn't say education) still cant spell words correctly. I dont care what colour you are, but your previous message is FULL of spelling mistakes!
#80
I know I said I would'nt reply but.... Firstly they are not all diplomas they are degrees and the FRCA is a docterate.I think it was very clear what you were trying to imply in correcting a trivial mistake.I was not the only one to pick up on it(note moderators comment). Why should you be so bothered about other peoples spelling mistakes? Concentrate on your own life.

Deep, sit back, relax, and let's discuss the Unichip
<joke BTW !>
Claudius, I should probably refrain from posting then, because my command of the English language would be substandard.
Sheesh, and I used to think correcting someone's spelling mistakes on the internet (wich is of course UK centered ) was a definite no-no...
Your spelling may be "superior", your communication skills are less than substandard, judging on the 5 odd posts of yours I read ...

I dont really care, since it is just a doctor not being able to spell, not myself (which would bother me more).
It's just that it makes it hard to read... No offense.
More interesting spelling there, but I'm not going to mention it anymore, promise
Come on, let's hug and forget about it. Peace and love!

Evil, more discussions on Unichip are needed mate(I knew it was a joke!)
Claudius do you know how to spell offence?(see your last post) But then what would I know I'm just a Doc who c'ant spell.Do you find it constructive or helpful for me to point out your spelling mistakes?(that was not the only one). You said in a previous post that this sort of mistake made it difficult for you to understand the subject.I managed to understand you,but then I'm used to dealing with children with learning disabilities. Please go away and let enthusiasts get on with their passion.
ps There are at least 3 other spelling and grammatical mistakes in your last few posts but I w'ont be as small minded as you to point them out.

Why are you so bitter about this? I told you I am not a racist and you question it and attack me! Maybe YOU are a racist in the sense that you dont like white people?!

When you are in the majority Racism is rarely an issue. I used to work in a team of over a dozen people with only 2 white people one girl and a chap and the chap used to get referred to as " snowflake" . Not a racist word but the sentiment was there.
Anything that defines a person by thier race rather than them as an individual could be considered racist to that person and thats what counts.
I'm of mixed parentage with my dad as English as they come and my mother from Guyana and I've been on the recieving and of racism , much of it unintentional but is still hurts all the same.
Lets make an effort to stamp it out

I am impressed mate I can't read any of my doctors writing at all so the odd spelling mistake can't be bad
considering all those qualifications
CLAUDIUS get a life
Best six months of my life (working) was spent with Alan (South African) , Khan (Indian) and me (English)
by the end of the 1st week nick names were used as follows
Me - Whitey
Khan - Paki
Alan - Racist
Now we had a real laugh for the next 25 weeks got some strange looks at Baring Brothers Bank but what a laugh
HOWEVER
I would not use these terms lightly and certainly not towards someone I didn't know
Phil

I agree! That's what my black yellow white and green friends always call each other, too! Never called anybody a Pakie here, so what do you mean? OK, maybe that doctor guy . . .

I'm so confused. Firstly i'd be glad if someone corrected my spelling on here caus i can't find the BLOODY spell checker anymore, where's it gone guys, oops ok and girls. ooooops ok homaphridites. Now I KNOW that's spelt wrong . Trying to understand how Chinky evolved into an offensive word. I presume it was used long before takaways ? so maybe thats the problem. But if the shops had originaly been called, for example rice houses, then going to the ricey would be ok ?, as going to the chippy is ok. The whole problem seems to stem from refering to a persons country of origin, but only if you are not from that country, and only if you abbrieviate it" If you think about it,how stupid is that really". I have to say i didn't know the scots would not find Jock offensive "personal thing me thinks", but do know that paki and ***** will not be accepted with a smile. I think it is just down to how the term has been used in the past, is there a local word that is used in these country's which is similar to Brits. If you were put on this planet with no previous knowledge of racism none of it would be offensive to you, just slang, So perhaps we should blame are relatives for passing it down the generations, but we should all really move on. We all know roughly, what offends and what dosen't and things have changed massively but it will take decades "if ever" to disasapear. Just be glad your living in 2002 and not 50 years ago we wouldn't be allowed to disscuss this.
Deep my spelling is complete rubbish as you can see and it's a civil question as you have A's in Lit and Lang, am i putting the ' in the right place in don't, won't ?.
