Ah yes, Insurance. Cheers Steve. I'd forgotten about that...

Dave - I love you mate. You really are the exception to the rule here. C&A model and a Skoda driver who does indeed enjoy and appreciate the finer things in life like Hi-Fi, decent whisky and Fish & Chips in Cornwall ..... Oh.... and Helen of course....

I'm being nice and you call me old??? I wouldn't call the Master II an old man's watch... Gok Wan has one...... oh...err.... hang on... that's not right.

It's like most things now cars, watches, houses. its all to do with prioritys more than anything. It's not got much to do with how much you earn or where you live but more to do what you want to spend your money on or get credit for.
it's easy / was easy to get IFC credit for a 5K watch nothing to do with much else.

Interesting. The op wants to know what sort of image it portrays or the reaction it will get from other people. Well, in a word, none really.

Its like most material things, its the whole package that counts. So £50k car and £200k house, I think ****, you should have bought yourself a £250k house

£50k car, £5k watch and £200k house, I think ****, should have bought a £255k house.

0r, £5k watch and queing in a NHS hospital, I think ****, should have spent the money on private health insurance.

Or £50k car and kids learning **** all in some ****ty failing school, I think ****, should have sent the kids to a private school or at least some tutoring.

Now, £million house, £100k car, kids in private school and a £5k watch, that's an image that's quite appealing to me....

Judgemental? Who me? LOL

Logical. A little luxury can soothe the soul from day to day, but there's no denying that diverting the maximum towards the more important things in life makes more sense. My cousin told me of people she knows who wear nothing but designer label clothing, then can't afford to go out, have holidays etc

I sold the Scoob and we run two diesel Skoda's so that I can double up my income to pay for a better current home, and aim towards our future plans of a more leisurely life in a better place, free from debt. My luxury watches are hand made, Swiss automatics, but were under £500 each, years ago.

Each to their own though.

So that is what you see as an image ??? The idea of a £5k watch seems pretty cheap at those levels. I have two friends with rolex's worth over £40k as they are /were both in the scrap metal business and are both pretty down to earth guys who's kids have went to normal schools and go to national health hospitals. Or is this what you aspire to have ????

So how do you portray this image to people you haven't met ??? Unless all you waffle on about is Oh I have a loverly house and I make £xxx with all my kids in private school but I only drive a BMW As I have said I have friends that do this and it makes me laugh at how they think they are soo much better than others when they aren't.

Not sure what your post means. The original question is about a material posession (things which I admit to coveting to some extent also)

I just gave some proportionality and priority to those material things, that's my opinion. Not for one moment do I look down on your mate for making his fortune in scrap metal.

But do I think he is a **** for spending £40k on watches and then not giving his family the best healthcare? No, he is a mega ****!

What do I aspire to? Not a £5k watch or £100k car, they would just be the icing on the cake if I got bored with everything else

That's the whole point that you will never quite get. You don't try or need to portray an image unless you are a wannabee.

Btw, you mentioned on the 'how much wedge do you earn thread' how much YOU earnt, I didn't (and never have), so you must be one of the types who likes to tell all and sundry how much £xxx you have

I'm sure his watch is worth a hell of a lot more cash now as that what what he told me 15 years ago Mine has 10 diamonds on it but thiers has the full face covered in them. By god they are ugly watches but they are worth a fortune. They both aren't bothered about material things as such but they do like to have some nice things.

Or maybe just buy a new Vivienne Westwood dress and matching necklace for yourself?? LOL

Your arguement is infantile, my post was illustrative of proportionality and priority. The op's question was about image, and was attempting to put his prospective rolex into context

What has how much his watch worth now got to do with what we are talking about?

As did SOME others, but NOT 95% of the people on this forum. That puts YOU in the category of people who like to talk about how much they earn, not me

I'm failing to follow your logic. I didn't say you need a flash car to be impotent, quite the opposite. All the important things first, then the frivolities, like flash cars etc.

Really we should all drive round in Datsun Cherrys and wear clothes from Matalan.

It's a joy having the burden of image lifted. Most grow out of it by the time they are about 30. Not half of SN though...

A typical chav (with a few quid) shopping list:

Rolex/Tag/whatever plus other jewellery
BMW/Audi/Rally rep car
TV over 37"
New (or newish) build house in an anytown housing estate (of course all vehementy deny they live on an estate - after all their house has a DOUBLE garage, next doors only has a single...) near a city - to try and make it seem posh.
Naff but expensive resort type holidays in places like Florida.
Like football
Can't tell the difference between a New World and a classic wine without reading the label
Have or want to have a nasty breed of dog
Read the Express or Daily Mail but often get a broadsheet to pretend they are posh.
No degree or higher education "cos it dun't matter" Extreme anti higher education views.
ANY clothing with a car/rally brand on it.

I'm sure some more will come up...

Patrick *** is SO last century.

Oliver Sweeney and Jeffrey West are where it is at now. Fabulous shoes, so well made. Will allow you to walk around just as effectively as a pair of M&S rubber specials - but with SO much more class

Oh and Jeffrey West's do scream look at me with their dandy designs. Sweeney's are more subtle, but so beautifully made with superb detailing.

Have you been stalking me?

On a more serious note - you can get all the things you describe with a very high level of leverage and in these credit crunch times, if you haven't already lost it all it could be just as precarious as all the other groups you speak of, if not even more so.

What a strange, yet enlightening thread.

I believe that I dont buy my watches for image purposes, I buy them for their function, craftsmanship and engineering, that fact that they are high end brands is quite simply because they are the best, in my view. But I am beginning to question myself.

I do not do any of the fashion brands mentioned in this thread, infact I have never heard of most of the brands mentioned by Spooky.

If I buy clothes for myself I buy jeans, cargo's, T shirts, Polo shirts and trainers.

I shop at Met Quarter, and my trainers from FootLocker or similar, my T shirts or polo shirts may be branded, LaCoste, Ralf Lauren, YSL, and I always buy Nike trainers.

If my wife buys for me, which she often does, she gets my clothes from a fella called George.... .... and she likes to shop at Next for all of us.

I am certainly not a flashy dresser, and would look upon someone who is a flashy dresser with confusion (ie wearing the brands mentioned in this thread).

Also these trendy types who wear gold and silver enblazened T shirts, baggie ar5se jeans, and white plimsoles, along with a hair do from a Gel advert, I dont get that either, but good luck to them.

As for priorities mentioned by Deep Sing, well I have totally fooked up there.

I live in a new build, in a City, have 2 trucks and 2 cars (non of which are rally reps), and a motor bike....

I 'own' 26 high end watches, and 3 of them are on interest free credit, they will be mine in December 09/January 10.

I have never given a thought to private education for my son, and have never though about private medical care either, but I do pay into a dental plan.

I didnt post on the how much do you earn thread quite simply because things wouldnt add up.

Here is the clincher...

{STANDS UP - HEAD BOWED}

I am going to Newquay, camping for week/10 days with my family and neice, it is costing me about £300, I am very sorry and ashamed at what I have done, please forgive me........

But we are going to have a SCREAM, and everybody including myself is excited at the prospect of mixing with the Landed Gentry, but we are going to try and behave ourselves and not cause too much distress to the locals.

Later Yoza, got to go, need to buy a cooler box and two new windbreaks...

The white face Daytona is a smooth looking watch and in no way OTT.

Worrying about clothes designers = gay.

Hate to say it fatscoob but you fail on chav points.

Oh and the sum total "given" to me by my parents while at Uni? £ZERO. They were ultra skint then so I was on my own. Many others are the same.

Rick Steins fish and chips are actually not expensive. Nor is the Cafe or Bistro. The Restaurant is pricey but very good - only the customers are a bit sniffy at times.

We have some amazing places to eat down here - with and without the coveted Michelin stars.
