Fair point mate, but I disagree. I knew I could time any watch to both Nat & Yoza turning up sharpish. 
Both of these guys (and a couple more) know their stuff and I trust their views explicitly. Plus, I'm after an opinion from a general none watch owners forum. I know everyone on here to be from the same sort of peer group, who enjoy or own similar cars so I'm assuming their viewpoint would be from the same background. You can't get that from a dedicated watch forum. Though I will be looking there too.
I can use a bus to get from A-B, but I choose to use a car. Not a simple, small, cheap car because that does the job too. I choose to drive a car I enjoy. I don't drive it to shout 'look at me' but I chose the car I drive now for me because I enjoy the engineering, toys and all round ability. I'm assuming you own a Scoob of some description? I've had three including a Litchfield and have moved on; I assume you will too one day. I also assume you don't choose to drive a Yaris or similar 'get you from A-B car' because you enjoy the Scoob for what it is...... that's how I feel about watches.
On the head in one sense... Your other comment is also spot on to what I'm thinking at the moment as Yoza's comments shows all too well.
I agree. That's one reason why the GMT stood out. I feel the Daytona and the 'obvious' Rolex's steps over that mark a fraction. I don't need the Chrono function of the Daytona either. If I do I can use the Speedmaster.

Fakes I can live with. It's going to happen. But the watch is for me, no one else. Something I can look forward to handing down to the kids too...

That's not quite what I was getting at. If a car analogy must be used, it would be like driving around in any old car whilst towing a ferrari for the benefit of anyone who cares to look, oh and to admire the engineering.

Both will cover ground at similar rates in the real world, both will get your from A to B. Both will be rewarding to drive fast. But what would you rather have, if the cost was not a consideration?

I bought a GMTII some years ago, wear it all the time, save for working on the car/bike/motorbike hasnt missed a beat, gains about 15 to 20 seconds a month. Find the dual time facility really usefull, or did when I travelled a lot on business. Never regretted the initial expense and its worth roughly what I paid for it.

They are £2390 new i think now. They WERE £1250 when i bought my first in 2001!

Any sort of shiny bling attached to wrist, fingers, ears toes or, if you're that way inclined, through your nose etc etc... can be considered jewellery. There's plenty more expensive makes than Rolex in the shops, that say a lot more about the size of your wallet, but for my age group, the Rolex sports watch is the 'one to have'.
Its just that for me, its jewellery function is at the bottom of the list... not at the top.

Alan, for what its worth, I've just taken my Breitling into Watches of Switzerland for a new battery, and we turned to the subject of Rolex. I tried the GMT II and its stunning, and if I'd had the funds, I'd have walked out with it. I've changed my mind about the Explorer II, its now the GMT II I'd have.
I don't know, without re-reading your posts, if you have tried one on, but if you haven't and already are considering buying one, be prepared to part with the cash if you do visit the dealer. You won't want to take it off.

I have tried one on now and, as you say, it's a stunning piece.
It felt 'right' and so much better built than my Speemaster. The bracelet had a real nice solid and indestructable build quality to it...
The Omega is a good watch too, but it's in a different league.
Parting with such an amount I want to get everything right myself.. so all the opinions and discussion has been enlightening!!

Really? I find Breitling Pro bracelets are the nicest feel. Rolex are notorious for having crap bracelets in fact...although the newer one's with trick fancy clasps are a lot better in the last couple of years. If you want to feel a really nice bracelt try a new oversize DD Plat or 18K. Then cry because you haven't got £20K to buy one

Nat. I don't have the experience so can't comment on Breitling or other straps. My Speedmaster is from 2003 and just doesn't have the solid feel of the Rolex.
I'd heard that the 2009 GMT II bracelets were much better that previous versions, but again I haven't the experience of the older versions. I just know that the 09 GMT I tried on was exceptional.

Yoza/Nat,
If you were going to buy a Rolex that might go up in value over the years (ie collectable) and can be bought for sensible money (ie not the price of a small flat) which one would it be? If indeed there is such a thing?

I havent had any bracelet issues with my GMTII, neither have my friends had trouble with the same bracelets fitted to Subs.
I have had constant issues with my Omega Seamaster braclet.

Submariner 16610 standard or LV. Both are being discontinued next year.
Either of the above two used £2k for Sub, £3k for Sea dweller would be a good deal also.
Any Steel Daytona if you can get it for about £5-6k now.
Any Steel GMT if you can get one for £2-2.5k.
Worth a punt maybe - 18K Day dates are £4-5k now. That's the lowest they've been for a long time, they aren't in fashion now but surely will be again one day and will only go up... At that price it's only above the scrap value of the gold!

Blue Face and gold dials .
Bought it 10 years ago for about £1800 ish if I remember correctly.
Anyone know of its value .?
No intention of selling ,its on my wrist every day ,does lose a few mins here and there ,and has never been serviced in its hard life .
Just curious .
Have looked at other watches ,usually whilst on holiday ,but I dont see anything I like better .(as I say ,I know D1ck about watches .!!!)
Has anyone got a picture of said watch ?So others may comment on its appearance .
Hopefully my calming nature will restore some kind of order .

Just been looking at the Rolex website and if this watch was all stanless steel and had the diamond face, thats my watch and as its in the gallery they obviously think its a watch to help with sales

Which is the 'classic' and has the presence, longevity and better resale value?
For me the GMT has that extra presence due to the second time zone facility and cleaner lines... or does the Sub have a more classic and historic value that the GMT can't touch... I'm not sure about the pearl a 12 though..
