??? The car analogies are just so much hot air. It's not hard to understand, it isn't rocket science or quantum mechanics - the point I am trying to make is that you don't need a watch at all if you carry a mobile phone. That is why I consider them jewellery purely there for 'aesthetic' reasons. Their function with regard to telling the time is redundant.

Wrong. The analogy stands up.
You may as well say that bikes or buses do the job.. so why have a car at all?

Having a watch on your wrist is much more efficient and easy than having to pull out your phone. Not all phones display the time in an easy and readable format. You have to press a few buttons to get there.

What phone do you have? Surely you've gone for the one that looks good and does the job well for the purpose you need?

There's probably many functions on a modern phone or PC that are redundant... this doesn't mean that they are suddenly turned into some frivolous waste of money...

You're missing out on the tactile nature, aesthetics and visual joy that comes with wearing one on your wrist. Exactly like your phone or car. They aren't considered to be accessories by many....

Er, they are a frivolous waste of money. Nothing wrong with that, but let's call a spade a spade!

Most things in life are quite frivolous if we strip it down to the bare bones. We could all get away with driving Tata Nano's instead of Scoobs, Beemers, etc. We could get by perfectly well on bread, fruit, veg and some meat, not curry's, pizza, filet mignon with morrell mushrooms or caviar. There's no need for t-shirts with fancy names or jeans with slight pocket variations quadrupling their value. We could all live in 2-up/2-downs and all be paid the same wage, no matter how hard we work, how clever we are or what aspirations and dreams we harbour. Even I must draw the line at Izal toilet paper though !

CB, I don't disagree.I'm saying there is nothing wrong with spending your money on frivolities, as you said we all do it to some extent. But, let's be honest about it that's all.

Ps if my post makes even less sense than usual its because I've just woken up with a moosive hangover!

Let's put this in perspective...

Yes, google show you to be correct. Its ' a bimetal submariner with blue face and blue bezel'

I take it these are no longer made? If so any idea the last year they were made?

Thanks. I think the older one looks nicer, slightly more masculine, and that pearl is just unacceptable.

The little bit of gold in them looks good imho. I don't like the bimetal daytonas, but for some reason seems to work on the sub.

If I found £5k down the back of the sofa, that's the one I would get

Well, I had the pleasure (and it was just that) of going to wedding of some friend of mine yesterday.
The wedding was being frequented by MONEY. I know this because I don't have any, and being quite perceptive, I can tell the difference!!!LOL!!
But what was interesting was the social exercise that commenced.....

Anyhoo, we sat at our table first, and we then joined by a chap (aged 40 - because he told us) and his wife - he was rather portly with a posture that projected arrogance. His blonde wife was dripping in gold......

Am I setting the picture right?

Then it started (we'd spied him earlier in the day necking as much free champagne as he could)....

He didn't do much to ingratiate himself with wifey by striking up a conversation with her with the opening line, "I know you don't I? Didn't you used to milk XXXXXX's cows for him?" (father of the bride has a rather large farm)

I nearly spat my drink over the table!!
Wifey's a nurse btw.

The term "conversation" after a quick check on Google means "A communication between multiple people".
We didn't get to exercise this social skill, as for the next 2 hours, I was subjected to what this bloke had done, how much money he had made at etc etc. This didn't wind me up (quite a feat at I'm normally quite acerbic to this type of person), as the observational exercise was in full flow

Then I noticed his watch. Rolex GMT II.(very nice it was too)

Now, the nature of this topic is discussing about the image portrayed, and this is the EXACT image that a Rolex gives off to me.
For every half-decent person who owns one (and I'm sure some of you owners fall into this category), there's an arrogant tw@t who undoes all of your hard work.

This isn't meant to pour oil on the flames, as quite honestly, there's a couple of Rolex and Omega watches etc that I would love, but there IS an image issue with things.

IMHO, a watch should be an extension of YOUR personality, not the other way round. A Rolex has mighty big shoes to fill.

Dan. Top story mate and exactly what I was after all those pages ago...

This is the type of social commentary that does portray the owners of this type of watch as weel as their car, house etc... some people use them to say things about them. Did he mention the watch or just have it on show?

There's no getting away from the fact that a set of Porsche keys thrown onto the table would have had the same effect. That sort of arrogance uses items of value to seemingly shout a little louder. Those who think it shouts '****!' are probably right.

But the message I'm getting here is that this is rare. Most Rolex's we'll see will be fake, (most of) those that own a real one do so quietly and admire if for themselves. Most people probably won't notice anyway.... And that, is OK by me.

Spotted this on the Rolex forums.

Very interesting short from The Luxury Channel (never heard of it!) about Tom Bolt (watch Guru) and the luxury watch market...

The Luxury Channel

Not seen any other documentaries on watches so this was a good taster...

Does that watch have shock absorbers in it like the other one you mentioned (ie to keep accurate time when your wrist is moving very fast and hard)

Still prefer a brash Hublot over an AP - but that is just my nouveau personal taste

I have worn both - borrowed from my friend.

And actually for the money I had a meeting with someone on Friday with a lovely gold chronomat with brown leather strap - looked very good. I have a stainless chronomat so looks better with the bracelet.

Bought it as my 30th b'day pressie to myself after i returned the 40th anniv moonwatch i had originally bought. Also considered a Patek Aquanaut but liked the AP a bit more and it has better history.

Mine is modified with brass chassis/case bolts not the White gold ones like in the pic as they're too soft and prone to failure/cracking (a poor idea of looks over function that i'm suprised AP made) and also a solid case-back as i don't like the feeling of Sapphire one's on my skin.
You did mention shock absorbers! In your link about selling watches in a recession there was a watch that had shock absorbers for when your wrist was involved in fast/rough motion. Please pay attention, seems like I know more about watches than you!

That Andyman Picard watch in the pic imho looks boring, like any Citizen or Seiko watch

I'd quite like a Patek Calatrava in yellow gold with nice brown leather boots. There aren't many yellow gold watches i'd have though.
Are you saying if you wore that watch you would also have to wear brown leather boots????? Is that a must? Would the be above knee or below knee? Or what if you owned that watch in a hot country, wouldn' you end up with really hot smelly feet??
