You did mention shock absorbers! In your link about selling watches in a recession there was a watch that had shock absorbers for when your wrist was involved in fast/rough motion. Please pay attention, seems like I know more about watches than you!
That Andyman Picard watch in the pic imho looks boring, like any Citizen or Seiko watch

I can't be arsed to read the entire thread, had a quick browse and seems to be a lot of bitching going on.
I can understand people thinking expensive watches are a waste of time (ahem) but we all have our vices. If we all liked the same things the world would be very dull.
To the OP, I wouldn't worry about image, if you want a nice watch buy it because you like it. I decided to treat myself for my 30th and after doing some research and badgering Yoza who gave me some excellent advice I bought a GMT Master IIc in January. It's a stunning watch and personally I prefer it to the Sub. Not sure where you're based but Ernest Jones in Enfield had one is stock last week. They might still be doing 12-24 months interest free credit.
You'll struggle to find a stainless daytona from an authorised dealer but plenty of grey dealers have them (albeit about £1200 over list price!).

I am buying it for me. No one else.
I'm contacting some active US AD's and resellers at the moment on a few of the Rolex forums as the $ is strong and can save me some £800 on a new piece.... Depends how customs see it I suppose....
I'm in Yorkshire, but the (Goldsmiths) 0% discount looks great value too... With a decent deposit the monthly outlay would be pretty decent... You can get online 0% for 36 months! Shop based is 18-24 I think...
So, plenty of options.... But I've pretty much settled on the GMT IIc.

You''d have a £3.5k watch sent with no insurance then?
Presents/toys would still attract the duty/vat. It's only exempt upto £38.
Return of repaired goods with the correct delclared value would attract attention big time.
The only way you could do it is send it declared as a gift with value under £38 including shipping. If the shipping is $45 then that leaves you with an item value of £8. Sending an £8 watch by $45 delivery is also going to attract attention big time.
No rolex dealer is going to send it declared as anything other than full value either - if they do then run a mile.

Must admit I do like that watch and the subs as well.
No way would I have one shipped from the states uninsured, you could aways go and collect it I suppose.

Nat - Totally valid points mate and would require a fair amount of risk taking by those prepared to go down that route...
Another reason why the 0% looks good...
Pacenote - flying would probably come in as dear with the extras of flying to California for a few days! But what a way to collect your watch though....

The problem is sending it all in one box with papers etc. It's obviously a new watch.
Best way is to send all the papers USPS air priority no tracking, send the bracelet only the same declared as returned repaired parts and then send the watch head itself seperately declared as returned repaired parts. The more tracking and "expressing" you put on an item the more attention it gets. I've done this with many watches with 100% success rate and no losses. Depends how risk acceptant you are though!
Helps not to send them all to the same address too..

Where were you looking at 0 %, I notice Goldsmiths do it but don't seem to do Rolex

Well, I had the pleasure (and it was just that) of going to wedding of some friend of mine yesterday.
The wedding was being frequented by MONEY. I know this because I don't have any, and being quite perceptive, I can tell the difference!!!LOL!!
But what was interesting was the social exercise that commenced.....
Anyhoo, we sat at our table first, and we then joined by a chap (aged 40 - because he told us) and his wife - he was rather portly with a posture that projected arrogance. His blonde wife was dripping in gold......
Am I setting the picture right?
Then it started (we'd spied him earlier in the day necking as much free champagne as he could)....
He didn't do much to ingratiate himself with wifey by striking up a conversation with her with the opening line, "I know you don't I? Didn't you used to milk XXXXXX's cows for him?" (father of the bride has a rather large farm)
I nearly spat my drink over the table!!
Wifey's a nurse btw.
The term "conversation" after a quick check on Google means "A communication between multiple people".
We didn't get to exercise this social skill, as for the next 2 hours, I was subjected to what this bloke had done, how much money he had made at etc etc. This didn't wind me up (quite a feat at I'm normally quite acerbic to this type of person), as the observational exercise was in full flow
Then I noticed his watch. Rolex GMT II.(very nice it was too)
Now, the nature of this topic is discussing about the image portrayed, and this is the EXACT image that a Rolex gives off to me.
For every half-decent person who owns one (and I'm sure some of you owners fall into this category), there's an arrogant tw@t who undoes all of your hard work.
This isn't meant to pour oil on the flames, as quite honestly, there's a couple of Rolex and Omega watches etc that I would love, but there IS an image issue with things.
IMHO, a watch should be an extension of YOUR personality, not the other way round. A Rolex has mighty big shoes to fill.

I understand your take on the present image that some people portray. However real gentlemen have ownered their Rolexs for many years, or even had them pasted down by there fathers.
If your going for buy/cool factor and want to put money in the bank then the Submariner 5513 pre 1966 is safer than Gold at the moment and will only increase in value.
Ask Rolex's UK's General Manager who has a very nice personal collection.

What watch was Peter Jones wearing on Jonathan Ross's show on Friday night, anyone know? That looked a thousand times more "look at me" than most Rolexes, in my opinion...

I wouldn't say i'm bitten, you see more wealth on wrists in the City than you can shake a stick at so it all becomes a bit passé, but when a watch is too big to fit up a sleeve, even on a bloke the size of Peter Jones, then you know there's some serious posturing going on!

It is strange that Goldsmiths don't advertise Rolex on their site, but they do do 0% as part of their group of companies such as Mappin & Web and Watches of Switzerland. Up to 18 months I believe... Possibly 24. Online seems to go to 36....

I was listening to a random watch podcast the other day and 2 Americans were talking about the Submariner....
"It's the best $800 watch money can buy, it's just a shame it costs $3,000"
Which was a shame because I think it's a beautiful watch, I ended the podcast in disgust after that.

I was watching Luxe yesterday and they had a segment about making a Hublot Morgan. Interesting combination of makes there!
Lots of brand alignment about that fact that they both use materials
