Of course the flip side is that Just because you don't believe in God doesn't mean he doesn't exist.

I know a few people who have thought it might be a good idea to find out for themselves rather than letting the rather selective media make up their minds for them. Interestingly far more end up believing in God than not.

Absolutley, I don't believe in unicorns, Zuess, Thor, Father Christmas, the Boogey Man etc. for reasons you well understand. Perhaps you could enlighten me on the difference between them and God?

Yeah yeah, so do I the other way round, we all know people who have done what we would have and then used it to back up our argument, it's a human failing. However, I don't look to the media for my information, let's be honest, they don't talk about it much anyway. Church attendance and polls about the belief in a God show that numbers of believing are falling. If you deny that then you are fooling yourself. 200 years ago, anyone who didn't believe was in a very small minority, yet now, barely half the UK population believe there is a god.

So, despite some people who you know who have gone against the grain, the trend is towards non-belief. I wonder why that is.......

This doesn't mean all people that believe in a religion are any more, or less manipulated than people who don't. Personally I believe in a god, the bible to me though is a book of lessons, and is not to be taken literal or followed by the letter.
I can guarantee you that a lot of people who bash others religious beliefs, are more than willing to be guided by the media and other junk on TV in this country. Personally I use religion as a reference point in my life as with many other things. A closed mind lives in a small world.
Can't see anything much wrong with that.

I would only add that tolerance is also a worthwhile attribute.

Because they areas boring as they come? I used to go as a child and stopped for that very reason. World wide it is a very different story though. Africa, Brazil, Asia for example.

Is there anyone under the age of 10 who believes in them? There's something like 2 billion people who are Christian, I don't think you'll find the same statistic for unicorns.

I don't have much choice but to believe there's a God as Ive seen unexplainable things done and happen in the name of God. Healings for example, but now we're bordering on the unacceptable for some people.

That could be because it takes them out of there comfort zone. If something is unaccountable in human terms people become uncomfortable.
It's the same with the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost how can that possibly be. I like to relate it in this.
What do the following items below have in common,
1. Ice cubes.
2. Snow flake.
3. Rain.

Answer they are all water but totaly different until they all become one as water again.

What have numbers got to do with it? Until a few thousand years ago, everyone thought the world was flat. Until a few hundred years ago, everyone thought the earth was the centre of the universe. Until 1929 everyone thought the Universe was unchanging. The reason you won't find many people believing in unicorns is because there is no evidence for them, the same situation for God, as it happens.

As for healings, there is not a single verified case of this happening. Period. Go and have at look at Why Won't God Heal Amputees? . People healing without medicine is not unheard of it, it doesn't make it a miracle.

Look up 'god ratio' on Google for some explantions.

At the end of the day, most people who believe just want to get on with their lives, and it gives them comfort, and who am I to change their lives.

But, if you claim something to be true, then it is up to you back it up, that is the point of these discussions. I don't bang on people's doors asking them to embrace science, and 99.999% of Christians/Musilms dont do it to me, so I live and let live. But, this is the internet........

What sort of evidence do people want?
I was in a church service where a terminally ill woman had only weeks to live. Treatment had stopped and she asked for prayer. The whole church stayed behind and prayed for 40 mins. the atmosphere was intense. 1 week later she came back with official reports that the cancer had completely gone. Her Doctor came in saying he had become a Christian after what she had told him.He had no answer to how it happened.

Yes it could be that she held her breath for 2.67 seconds while hopping on her left foot triggering something that we havent yet discovered that cured her but come on!

You will never get concrete proof that God exists just as no one will ever be able to disprove God but there are very good indications out there.

BTW The idea that everyone thought the earth was flat is a Middle Earth Legend (well they didn't have Urban then). The Greeks promulgated a view that the earth was spherical and this was a generally held belief, although this did reach a low point in pre-Medieval times. It is likely never to have been a scholastic belief in the age of modern man.

I know of a woman who used Neuro-Liguistic Programming techniques of positive thinking and had exactly the same experience. Total recovery from terminal cancer.

So is it God or is it positive affirmation, thinking and focus?

So what you are saying is that the biblical Jesus had a multiple personality disorder...

And that must be a tough one to wake up to, do you pray to yourself as god, or at that time are you the son of god because you haven't got out of your pyjammies but while all this is going on you hear voices in your head aka the spirit of god...

No wonder our evengalical cousins in the states are completely bonkers!

Ah the realms of bio feedback, some pretty crazy and awesome stuff in this area and worth looking into... apparently atheletes are the people they are becuase through practice and natural elevated abilities (Colin McCrae for example), have developed bio feedback to such a level they are able to do what they do best... that us mere mortals can't... because we are eating a kebab and half drunk on the side of a pavement trying to hitch a cab ride in a cop car.

I guess it depends on whether you believe in God or not as to how you attribute it. To help there is another example but there is no concrete evidence just my word.

My sister (living in Ibiza) had had tooth absis. Parents (in UK) prayed with the church for healing with out her knowing. At the same time the absis disappeared instantly (we phoned her 10mins after).

There are many more accounts, all slightly differing that I know about. Guess what the common denominator is.
