I think it is pretty funny how all the critics appear and say you should and do this and that. At the end of the day, been on your phone while driving is not acceptable and is dangerous. But unless they make the rules for police also people will continue to break the law.
The police have a hard enough job I am sure but they don't make it easier on themselves when I have seen loads of them on mobiles whilst driving police cars. It does not matter what driving training you have had it is still the same for everyone else.
As for:
"As a daily commuter on a motorcycle, I hope they throw the book at everyone selfish and irresponsible".
I always make room for motorcycles etc, but it does not make it right that the go in the middle of two lane traffic to beat queues. Whilst it is not as dangerous as been on the phone. It is still dangerous and if some one pulls out your aint going to stand much chance.
Every one breaks the law at some point, some more than others and generally the worse people for this are the people that we call the POLICE, difference is they generally get away with it.
Some time ago, I was pulling on to the motorway, aprox 65 ish, then a guy in a punto and think it was would not move over to middle lane to let me in, when he could have quite easily done so. Instead of braking to get on to the motorway I dropped it a gear to get in front of him, but did not cut him up.
About a second later he was at the side of me beeping his horn. I looked across to see he was point to his arm where he had his police badges on.

Even if radios are attached to stab vests they are not in hand held to ear and they have in-ear pieces, much the same as wired handsfree kits.
You sir just sound like a fool.

The offence (summarised) is using a mobile phone, police Tetra radios are not a mobile phone, although a copper (or anyone esle) could still be done under the due care and attention laws while using a radio.

Totally agree with instand bans for using a mobile whilst driving.
All this speed camera are for road safety is complete bollocks though.
I was behind an officer who had just packed up his speed camera and was enroute back to the station. On the way there was a large ratchet strap in the middle of the road. The officer swirved round it and carried on. I thought he was going to go to the next roundabout and go back. Oh no he carried on. The strap and obviously been knocked to a safe part of the road by traffic as it was still there two days later. All it would have taken is for that to have been caught right and it would have been thrown up through someones window causing a serious injury.

The best thing is, when they do something wrong, i.e shoot some one in error or beat an old man up in public, they investigate themselves. How does that work. It would be like every motorist investigating whether they have broken the law and all come back with the answer saying no.
What I am saying is that police make up there owns rules, do what they want and majority are on the take. For the few that are good at what they do, the others spoil there reputation.

America policing system is the way forward. Dont know how true this is but I have heard that if you get caught speeding, what ever speed you get a small fine, same for phones. Then if you get caught again the fine goes up and so on.
Seems pretty fair to me.

I only know this as I worked with a PMR Radio company a few years ago and asked the same question and thats what they told me.

Not really fair if you can afford to speed is it? Putting points on licenses means that everyone has the same clean slate before incurring a ban. Paying fines is far easier for some than others, perhaps meaning those with more cash are allowed to break the law more often.

I am not complaining. I am stating he was in the wrong so what reason would he have to show me his police arms, when he was clearly in the wrong. Police don't accept liability for what they do.

If you have evidence that the "majority are on the take" as you put it, I presume you will report the matter so as not to tarnish the reputation " For the few that are good at what they do" as you put it. You are obviously concerned as to the integrity of police offices and have evidence to prove this. Please do something about it!
Oh and by the way, what exactly did this "officer" in the Punto do wrong? Not let you in when he could as you put it. I've not heard of such an offence personally

Driving down the lanes near to me today - woman on her mobile riding a bloody horse!!!
Right in the middle of the bloody road she was clip, clop, yak, yak yakking away. You need 2 hands on the reigns of a horse - let alone a car - completely oblivious to me she was. Found it rather annoying.
Still see people driving and using thier handsets... really winds me up..

People do get touchy about using a mobile these days, if your old like me then most of the people moaning did it day in and day out before the law came in , the laps of concentration stems from the talking not the holding it in the hand so hands free is much the same, any one had three points for smoking a *** held in the hand yet , the law of undue care and attention used to be investigated after an event not before and it will only be a matter of time before pressing a button on the stereo or looking at the sat nav will be the next big issue.

However, I do fear that you may have a point with the sat nav and stereo thing. But then they'd have to draw the line at turning on your heater switch or operating the windows.

I know everyone mocks it but it really f**ks me off when people do this and escpecially when they get caught and get a away with it, cos after my wife and child were involved in a head on crash cos the f**king stupid bitch driving the other car was trying to text someone and crossed over the white lines and straight into my Mrs and young son. What did the coppers do when they were told.......yep, **** all, didnt want to know, why cos it would take up to much time to contact the service provider to get conformation of call/text sent recieved at time of the crash just classed it as a RTA
