if your car a classic import wrx/sti use 99ron where you can get it. if you cant get that then use octane boost! with 97ron to be safe! but dont go full chat till you got the good stuff in (millors actane boost to a tank of 97 ron)! all uk scoobs are mapped for 97ron so you people dont worry. all new age scoobs should cope with 97ron. but if your cars been maped? then surley you should no about this when you brought it?

stinger. for a good map (the clinic) it will cost you £650 plus. yorky shops (petrol stations) wont sell octane boost you need your local motor factor for this stuff.

iv seen on a old series of fifth gear that octane booster are a waste of money and on there tests they did (ok not on scoobys) but actually made some of the cars lose power, one of the brands i think it was a nos octane booster was the most expensive and made one of the cars lose power.

no you put in what fuel u want it remaped to! if you put in 95ron fuel and map it then thats what you use. if you put in 105ron fuel if you can find it and have it maped then thats what you use.

Stinger, your car needs 97+ ron fuel, do not run her on 95, she will just implode and all you will have is a shell and a shagged engine as she will det her self to bits

2 things you need to do, octane booster, most places do some form or another (do a search for millers octane plus) and go have a look in the group buy section for a KS3 knock sensor, you need one of these on an import so you know what is happening under the bonnet.

I had my newage mapped on 97ron and it was ok for a few weeks then started to play up and det. Thankfully I have a KS3 which picked it up so I took it steady had it mapped again and it looked like the fuel was the problem. I now stick 5% methanol in when I run 97ron just to be on the safe side.
Methanol and E85 fuel are the cheapest forms of octane booster and raise it by the ron not 0.1 of a ron.

The KS3, knock analyser monitors the engine noise looking for knock, pre detonation, pinking all the same thing just different names. Det is where the fuel is exploding before its ment to ie before the spark. This puts greater strain on the engine and can lead to blown pistons, snapped rods, bearing failure etc.
Basically you do not want or your engine will be lived. I can recommend the KS3 as I have it and its picked up problems for me in the few months I have had it.

I buy my methanol from JennyChem bit more expensive then ebay but then you don't know what your getting from there. Seen as its going in my engine I'd rather know its good, dynamix put me onto them as that's who he used before using E85

I think classics can yes you need a new chip or esl board fitting to the ecu though.
I've had mine mapped 3 times at home/ on the road now.

KS3 have just gone up in price, look in the group buy section thats where I got mine from.

Version 3 STI - Even though yours is registered 1996 I'm pretty sure its a MY97, which the ecu can't be mapped and the standard ecu is mapped for 100 Ron fuel. 97 Ron fuel isn't good enough and you will need to either find 99 Ron fuel (Tesco or V-Power) or use octane booster. To do neither will result in engine failure. Knock sensor is about £250 from memory.

You lost me do you mean actually that they didnt get 100 ron fuel in japan until 98? hence they mapped their cars for 100 ron fuel?
They never run scoobs in japan on 95 ron, thats for sure!

I paid 180 for the KS3 I just checked.
In my eyes its worth every penny of it, like I said before I run 97 and 5% meth and it never seems to miss a beat now.

i done a bit of research and i also found out they didnt start using 100ron fuel in japan until the late 90's before that it was 97-98 ron, since my 96 sti is near euff standard, that means i can run it on 97 ron. But just to make sure where is the ecu on my car so i can have a look at it and then tell you guys what it says on it, so if u'll be kind enuff to tell me if its oem or a aftermarket one? And just another one i drove 110miles today to torbay from chepstow and put £30 of texaco sul = 97 ron and the car didnt give no problems what so ever.

I'm with Andy on this one. Used to run my Scoobs on either Tesco 99 or V-Power. Slight mpg improvement with V-Power but no ill effects off either.

I wouldn't personally run it on 95ron even if taking it easy.

It was about 1997/98 when they first got 100 ron in japan, it was the version 5 STI's that were first mapped to use this fuel, you can run on normal SUL (and believe it or not, not every car that is the same reacts the same way to fuel, its quite weird really some run great and others det to death )but I would still pay for a KS3 knock sensor (go here for a demonstration Video Demonstrations of Advanced Engine Knock Detection Systems from Phormula )
as you never know when they "accidentally" put unleaded into the super unleaded fuel tanks (it happens quite a bit ) plus its less than a 1/14th of the cost of an engine rebuild

i was under the impression that tesco 99 ron was the same as V-Power only diff being that V-Power has a cleaning agent in it for car

All good brands of petrol have a cleansing package, Tesco 99 included. Some brands may be a little more effective than others. BP Ultimate is supposed to be one of the cleanest but is not a fuel of choice amongst most Subaru owners as it's definately not as det tolerant as V-Power or Tesco 99

No Tesco 99 is blended with Bio-ethonal to get it's octane rating. Saving the planet, while doing 18mpg
