...or he will probably remember what you did for a very long time and have quite a good impact on him.
Do we not have a duty to kids? They are impressionable and shooting them with paintball guns etc. isn't exactly going to help. Showing kindness teaches kindness, threatening him will teach him how to threaten.
Also heaping burning coals and Les Miserables springs to mind here.
An interesting mix of opinions, I wonder which style has lead to England being full of these little ...... that we have today.

Well played. I have an 11 year old son and I'm trying my best to bring him up in the way I was. I hope to god that if he ever gets caught doing something similar (I'm sure none of these holier-than-though posters on here have never done anything like that-I know I did when I was a kid!) I hope that he gets caught and the fear of god put into him, like you have.
I also think that the £2 was justified. That kid will remember that, and it will remind him of the handshake and the time when honesty really did bring a reward for him.
Call it a Hollywood moment if you like, but FFS there's so much negativity every day on the news, recession, soldiers dying, politicians robbing us blind, swine flu etc etc etc, it fills me with just a little hope that maybe, just maybe, the kids are all right!

Speak for youself I never stole anything at all as a kid. Probably worst now in fact with the internet being so available
Oh please. All he will remember is doing something wrong (if he actually knows the difference between right and wrong) and getting rewarded for it!

I think you did well and i think giving him £2 for getting them back was a very nice thing to do with a good lesson behind it but no doubt the lesson will be lost if he is like the rat-like children that are now overtaking my village.
I think i posted up about my dustcaps not so long ago, my neighbout caught them and got them to refit them. I then caught them 4 times in the same day and then a few days ago one of the kids was caught by the fella who lives opposite me trying to nick them again. He is a scary ****** too and he fixes things for people so to speak, so he read the kid the riot act in a way only drunken cider drinkers can.

The only way around this for me was to buy locking ones. They've been tried a couple of times as I can see finger marks in the brake dust but nothing for a while (touch wood )

kids steal "dusties" its just a fact of life my youngest daughter 9 at the time arrived home proud as punch having spent some of her pocket money (50p) on 4 subaru dust caps from a school pal ............. low and behold they were mine lol I went to the kids dad a friend of mine and the wee lad had a bag full of dust caps seems its a bit like collecting top trumps and subaru dusties are well sought after.
Its not really malicious kids could be doing alot worse just buy locking caps or stick with the black plastic ones as the are worthless in the playground.
we were all kids ourselves
