I'm just wondering how can they actually define what is private or public listening.

Here's an example. Suppose it was a hot sunny day and you were down the beach. The beach is crowded and someone is playing a radio or a CD player. They are only playing it for their own enjoyment but others around them can also listen.

Wouldn't need one on non-private land, Scunnered, although it would fall under public nuisance laws if there was a complaint if it was too loud. These guys have an answer for every eventuality, they have to.

Your are seemingly a bit slow today so I will spell it out for you. As I stated they have tried to con me for a license that is not required in that TV's only require a PRS license if they are in a public place , a hotel room is not a public place and their attempts to convince me that it is, and threaten our business with court action if we do not buy an unrequired license, makes me quite happy in calling them *****. THey also claim on the phone that if you play music publicly you have to have a license from them, this is clearly not true as you only need a licence if you play copyrighted music and the issue being the number of artists from around the world who recieve no cash from the PRS.. By rights before asking for money they should prove that you have played music from the admitedly large body of musicians and publishers that they represent not just demand money under threat of court action, lying to convince you that you owe them money.
There are loads of other issues such as demanding 6 years worth of back payments from companies who had no idea that they should have paid in years gone by and their recent use of much more aggresive tactics has angered many people not just me.

Its an interesting one this.

My own opinion is any business with <10 employees AND no public access should be exempt.

There is just no benefit to be had from either camp IMHO as the money they spend getting small businesses licensed up does not balance the income they then get. IMHO.

I always tend to visulise the PRS as operating just under the radar - almost a clandestine operation. Not many people know about them, but they will just appear out of the wood work.

Its this low profile that keeps them "off the radar" so to speak.

I think if they went after every single business in the UK they would very quickly cease to exist.

IMHO.

How about you at least read their website before making yourself look stupid?
After you posted that rubbish above, despite me having ,in all probabiltiy alot more dealings with the PRS than you rather than call you a **** (very grown up of you that btw)
I thought I would make myself clear. You have made a few ridiculous, innacurate statements towards me so far 1. above 2. that I don't understand their mandate 3. that I think they are ***** becuase I don't know where that cash goes rather than the real reason I don't like them. 3. You suggested that you need a PRS licence to play public music which is clearly not true.
After the collection of **** you have posted you then try to call me a **** and tell me to **** off, what are you twelve, or is it that you reserve the right to act like a child on SN, the seriously bit at the end is classic. Get a grip and grow up you silly little boy.

IMHO, there is no difference between a bar etc and a factory.

The fees are on a sliding scale, so your small-business won't be paying the same as a corporate shop floor.

But for what it's worth, the PRS are anything BUT "jumped up little hitlers" - quite the opposite, very supportive actually, and will do their best to allocate a fee on the size/circumstances.

And yes, I'm a musician who gets royalties from this type of revenue.

Without them, there would be a LOT less music for you to hear.
Oops, I feel bad now as I dropped "Dynomotion" in my set last Friday

I'm glad it amused you. Do you think by haughtily saying it's "classic" it makes you look any less of a *****? In case you're in any doubt, it doesn't. And i'm still not going to read whatever points relating to the subject in hand you've made. You define chippy. It's a shame more people haven't made you aware of the fact. Move on, talk to somebody else, do us all a favour.

I suggest (and shoot me down in flames all you want) that you two discuss your differences and petty insults via pm or on a seperate thread.

As per normal on here when 2 big ego's clash, there is a war of words and it ends up spoiling a decent thread.

No offence, but ffs grow up

Default The alternaive to paying PRS FEES??

We use www.rfmradio.co.uk in our business for quality music and entertainment, with NO PRS fees as all the music is royalty free, not your usual "lift music" but unsigned quality singer song writers, presented by professional Djs, so why not give it a try and tune into day.

Bump,

Hmm i was going to post about RFMradio myself as i have been running it during business hours for the past 5 weeks now.

I bought a cheap 2.0 speaker setup for the work CCTV system and used this mini shoutcast player to auto boot when the cctv machine boots up

Mini Web Radio Player (version: 1.1) by Arpoon - Loïs Bégué

Configured the mini player to only allow RFM Radio, and you are fully legal, i have one speaker in the office with the volume turned down, and the other bolted outside to the side of the carwash building for the customers, they love it, the staff are happy, jobs a gooden.

Cost so far £7 for a cheap set of pc speakers from asda

To be honest, its not really my choice of music, but the stuff i usually listen to would scare the punters away

During christmas i was a bit cheeky and configured it to only run some christmas shoutcast server instead, but the carols started getting right on our **** after the first week
