You can account for AP up to a point before firing, but really its the effect of the string and the bow on the arrow. I'll see if I can dig up some diagrams and an explination.
Technology has moved on vastly in 20 years since I last shot. My arrows are all carbon fibre now, non of this alloy stuff, so vey stiff and light.
The fastest bows produced now, are at 70lb draw weight kicking 350 grn arrows out at 350 fps! 10 years ago that figure was a dream!!!

so what is the maximum fps you can go these days before the bow and arrow falls into the law of firearms?
I might be wrong but arnt crossbows usually more powerful than bows? I remember looking into getting one here in the uk then i got slightly worried with regards to the law. Still want one but havent got a clue as to the legalities. any ideas?

350 fps is the max on open market, give it another 1.5 - 2 years and we will see 400 fps.
Archery kit will never fall into fire arms laws (it can't, there is no barrel involved), so unlimited
Its the tech behind the limbs thats the limiting factor at the momment, when you push them beyond what they are comfortable with, they like to break! Not a scenario you want to be in, thats alot of stored energy waiting to come back around your groin or head.
Cross bows, have the proportionally have less power then a compound due to the short travel of the string. In 1 organisation, CB's are limited to 105lb draw weight, they throw bolts out at about 215 fps v my compound at 53 # draw weight throwing arrows at 280 - 290 fps. To get anywhere near my speeds they have to be compound cross bows with very heavy prods circa 200lb + draw weights, and they are very very very noisey.
