It's a generalisation, but based on my observations I disagree with you.

It's not arrogance at all. I disregarded the list because it was copied and pasted from (probably) the first site Google suggested and was not researched in any way by the person posting it.

If you're going to make grandiose claims like that, don't pull them out of thin air (or from a random site on the net) and have something with which to back them up. If you don't, expect them to be ignored.

If we're going to talk about arrogance, how about Jimmy's attitude that he'd copied a list from the net and he expected it to be accepted as true unless someone could provide evidence to the contrary. HE doesn't need to research his claims and be able to back them up, but anyone daring to disagree with him does? I don't think so.

No, I think you have.

Its not the purity of heritage thats important to us. Its the fact we have a heritage in which we take a national pride.

You don't appear to have that national pride (as a nation) whish, in effect, means you will never understand the opposing point of view.

If you don't understand the fundimental position, then you are absolutely unqualified to pass judgement.

By all means continue to bait some of the posters on this thread, but its hardly valuable contribution.

And as for these past references you appear to be alluding to, you either have the wrong person, or you forgot that it was you who threw your toys out of the pram and pissed off in the huff

There is a fundimental difference between telling someone to shut up and challenging their position on something Emma

I really don't get Scottish nationalism.

There is no Scottish heritage to speak of. Most of your traditions are from other countries.

You are a mongrel nation, like the English. There are no indigenous Scots per se. You do not have your own language, unlike the Welsh or Irish.

You are not a conquered country, like Wales, you signed away your own hard fought freedom in the name of financial gain.

You are supported financially by the very people you see as 'the enemy'.

People on here go on about how they don't really dislike the English, but my experience simply doesn't bear that out.

I am Welsh, but I dont sound it. When I am in Scotland (which is a lot due to my job), I am treated very differently once I say I am Welsh. People are polite to me, but once they know I'm a 'fellow Celt', I'm like a brother!

The anti-English stuff pours out, and not just about football teams. OK, not everyone, but it does seem be the majority feeling, not the minority one.

Wales and Scotland need England, not the other way round. The English are not the problem, and to be honest, most of the anti-English sentiment goes over their heads, it's more of the problem for the Jocks themsleves!

The fact is Scots and English are all pretty much of the same mixed up heritage. Your pride comes from thinking you're better than the English, which is evident from so many of the posts on this thread. Being a Scot is nothing more to be proud of than being English, Irish, Turkish, Spanish, red, black, pink, yellow, or blue with orange stripes. And continued aggressive ranting about it does not make it so.

We won't understand as a nation or we cannot, as individuals, understand? I'd dispute that even if the nation as a whole has no pride, (which is a claim I would dispute in itself, it's just that we don't bang on about it aggressively all the time), it does not mean that members of that nation cannot understand national pride.

National pride is a great thing. The way it is expressed by many Scots is not. (Note: This is a statement, not a comparison. I am not saying that the way national pride is expressed by many English is better)

I would also point out that perhaps you have so much national pride that you can't see past it to anything else, making your contributions equally invalid as you are claiming mine are.

Ah the joy of hearing that from someone with his head so far up the Scots national **** that he can't tell daytime from night.

Of course my not agreeing with you would be down to my lack of understanding of the fundamental position. How silly of me not to realise!

Now be honest, you're actively trying to miss the point, aren't you? Either that or you're not actually reading the posts.

So, let's make this as simple as possible.

Many of the Scots on this thread have been going on about how wonderful and glorious is to be a Scot and how much better Scots are than English. I pointed out that historically many of you are from Irish stock. It was then pointed out that I may also be. This is true, but completely irrelevant because I don't care. I am not the one ranting about how great it is to be Scots without realising that fundamentally we are mostly of the same mixed up background.

I'm being vocal about the vitriol and hate laced assertions that Scots are the ultimate super people and soooo much better than everyone else.

To be fair it's just the Engerlish they think they're better than.

Oh - and the Weegies - the only thing worse than an Englishman is a Weegie (Of course this doesn't apply if you're a Weegie - unless you are a particularly thick one)

To be honest, that could be any city centre in the UK, the only thing that marks it out as Scotland, is the bloke who could not leave his takeaway food and came back for it

Well, a large part of it was "in my experience", so I don't see the problem with that!

As for the rest, well, most of the things that the world thinks are famous for being Scottish are not Scottish at all. They originate in other countries, and the most iconic Scottish thing of all, Tartan, was an English invention. Bagpipes, not Scottish, golf, not Scottish, the list goes on. That is not my opinion, that is just how it is I'm afraid.

You are are a mongrel nation. I'm not advocating that the English or the Welsh are not, but Scots thinking there is something Scottish about being Scottish is not borne out by your history or racial and cultural heritage. Gaelic originates from Irish, so is not Scottish. The closest thing to indigenous Scots that we have (the Picts) spoke a language related to Welsh, not Irish, so where does that leave modern Scottish nationalism?

Another non opinion is that Scotland was not conquered by the English, but willfully, and for financial gain and to possibly avoid disaster after Scotland had gone in to dire financial staits after the failure of the Darien Scheme, signed the Act of Union with England in 1707.

There is also good evidence that several large bribes were accepted from the English so that Scottish nobles and officals would smooth the largely unpopular union. So, your own leaders sold you out, hardly the English fault is it?

You still are supported financially by the English. Admittedly, most of the UK is subsidised by the wealthy south, but that does not change the fact that Scotland is in deficit and would not be able to provide the current level of service through independent taxation were it to gain it's independence.

All that said, I don't dislike Scotland or the Scots at all. I think it's a great place, beautiful countryside, and generally warm people. I know many poeople in Scotland who I genuinely would count as close friends, but they do have a chip on their shoulders about the English!

Perhaps Scotland should re-brand itself as 'New Scotland' like New Labour.
