It's grammar, not grammer.
It's sentence, not sentance.
But i fundamentally disagree with the usual "you can understand what i'm trying to say" mantra. Yes of course we can understand, but like it or not, some people DO judge the validity of people's contributions based on their use of English. How many books do you not read to not know that Scots wear kilts? If you don't read, how can your opinions be anything other than shoot-from-the-hip gut reactions, with questionable usefulness? I'm not trying to be awkward, i'm just telling you how it can come across.
If i came down on every basic spelling error on Scoobynet, i reckon it would involve about 80% of all posts. Yep, 4 in every 5. I try my hardest to look the other way. Most days.

Telboy, books are just one method of learning, there are many others nowadays. Internet, television, radio, talking to others are several ways to learn and understand things. If anything, Im Discovery Taught ! ( Thank god for the discovery channels )
You statement suggests that unless you read, your not intelligent, or your views arent consider useful ? Does that make all blind people worthless ? Now if I read **** all day, which is a `book`, does this make my views more useful ? :-)
Many successful people, leaders and billionaires are dyslexic, reading and writing being one of the things they dont like or do.
So, yes I understand / agree, to a point, about what you say, but I also consider it a ton of crap too :-)
Still find you a funny guy though.

I saw an advert from Vodafone who advertised a QWERTY keyboard feature but advertised it as a QUERTY keyboard.
I check my replies and generally it's of a decent standard but I am not one to jump on replies, however, if it's an Ebay auction or the likes then terrible spelling and grammar will put me off the seller.

People do make subconscious judgements on the basis of grammar and spelling. I would also avoid poorly written Ebay ads in the same way that you make judgements about second hand cars in that rough people tend to own rough cars.

Seriously though, does it not bother you that that's wrong? I guess not.
I do get your point though about media other than books. What i would say though, is that the people on here who have decent English are rarely badly mis-informed, whereas i can't say the opposite is true. Whether that's an accurate observation or just my blinkered view i wouldn't like to say.

". . . people on here who have decent English are rarely badly mis-informed "
Did you know that Hitler was very well educated and had a teaching background ? Im sure his written German was perfect, but was rather `mis-informed` towards his views about the jews.
Whether someone is either informed / miss-informed depends on the person's own personal views.
Therefore, I feel your mis-informed about your informed beliefs :-) hahaahaha

Not a subject that overly concerns me to be honest
Oh ok
Some words i can let go (sort of), but your/you're/there/their/they're/too/to/its/it's/lose/loose/breaks/brakes i just think anybody who's had any sort of secondary schooling should be able to spell correctly.
Best one we've had on here recently was "overall" when the intended word was "overhaul". Not the first time i've seen that one done, but goodness me that's poor in my opinion.

Bought and brought is annoying! The Yam Yam's around here get very confused when I explain this to them.
' No you have not brought some beer from the shop, you have bought it from the shop, with actual real money' !!!!

Incorrect use of "learn" and "teach" can be annoying too.
When I was a child someone I knew would sometimes use, "I'm gonna learn you a lesson", as a threat. He never could fathom it when the response was along the lines of, "You are? Great! That'll save me from having to do it".

Would I stoop so low? I doubt it, I'd probably just say "wind your neck in, this is not an english language forum, so stop being a pedant", which is something I believe I've mentioned in the past.
I'm far from perfect when it comes to grammer and speeling, I know this, I do NOT need it pointed out to me, especially in such pedantic ways as emboldening letters in words, or a little smile emoticon when I've got it right.
I'll be honest and say that I consider this type of thing to be nearly as bad as trolling, as it's irritating, and in my opinion, unneeded and unwanted on SN. Perhaps I'm in the minority here?

Is not, isn't
Does not, doesn't
You are, you're
Your just means something belonging to you. Your car, your house, your whatever. I don't know how else to explain it. I just don't get how they can be confused.

i agree with TelBoy -- it just seems common courtesy.
I know my written English is poor (by my wife’s impeccable standards) and I will often get her to proof read any reports/documents I have to produce for work.
Because I recognise poor written English – and I do think it dilutes the message and is often a product of lazy thinking.
My father in law is a reasonably well known musician (60’s rock star if you will).
And he often tells me stories of the “riders” that well known bands would put in the contracts when performing at rock venues.
One regular one was a bowl full of smarties – but no brown ones.
When the band entered the dressing room, they would check the bowl, any brown smarties and they would walk out, on the basis that the promoters had not read the contract properly – they missed the smartie clause, and if they missed that what else have they missed – attention to detail.

Tel,
I'm not sure if I've asked this before, nor wether I've seen a reply from you to anyone else asking, if indeed they have, so I shall now ask.
What and/or why does incorrect grammar and spelling, on an internet forum where those items are not the primary focus or reason for the forums existence, annoy/irritate you to the extent you feel you have to correct people, even though you know the majority will not appreciate it, and thus prejudice them against you based on this.
Actually, I ask the above of anyone who feels, acts the same as Tel on here.

The difference is in the lack of apostrophe. The apostrophe in "isn't", "doesn't" and "you're" indicates that letters have been omitted. "Your" does not have an apostrophe so cannot be taken to be a shortened form of "you're".

For goodness sake. Why can some people not just accept some people do not have as good a standard of English (written at least) as others?
It's a car forum, and even in NSR, not everyone is going to analyse what they write, just to please a few people who like to pick at others.
It's one thing to have a thread to have a bit of a moan about it, but if nothing else, it's not very nice to go on other threads, just to bring someone down by highlighting their mistakes. Spelling simply isn't everyones strong point, and like it or not, that's just the way it is.
It's actually getting quite boring, seeing this sort of thing cropping up.

Oh i see what you mean, Duncan (i'm assuming). Your being an abbreviation for you're. Actually i like that, at least it's a reason!! Ok fair enough, i'm not here to make enemies out of this, contrary to what some ****-stirrers on the thread might think, but your and you're are totally different, i'd die happy if everyone just got that one right.

What really pisses me off, is when people refuse to learn/accept/mend their ignorant ways. We all started out not knowing any better, but when youre shown the way, f*cking well take it! Wearing your continued ignorance on your sleeve like a badge of honour is stupid beyond words!
