Additional fluoride has the side effect of possibly causing flourosis (mottling) of the teeth.......Described a long tima ago by H Trendley Dean LOL I'll just go and have a look at the data for a second.........

Found his picture

Henry Trendley Dean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ah.........here's the data

http://www.inchem.org/documents/ehc/ehc/E36_4.gif

At the "optimal" fluoridation of 1mg per litre there is still potential to cause enamel changes. From a population point of view there is good risk benefit as at this level it statistically reduces decay by 50%. This is why I am in favour of water fluoridation on a natonal level. All that reduced pain / suffering / dental visits/ general anaesthetics etc for accepting that some teeth *will* be mottled.

The risk benefit from an individual point of view is not as clear cut. Since decay can be effectively controlled in an individual by diet and fluoride toothpaste why take the individual risk.

Also remember that Dean was looking at "certainty effects" wheras fluoride mottling at low concentrations is a stociastic effect.

All in all I decided not to give fluoride supplements to my kids...not good risk / benefit for an individual who is not in an at risk category.

Shaun

PS just for anecdotal evidence, in my professional capacity I have treated a number of dentists children who's parents have fluoridated their kids to the max..........and have flourosis.
