You dont want to be too close to Old Trafford, some not so nice area's around there (we will start with anything in Ordsall ) so either in the centre or go slightly further out, try UK Hotel Locations these aint too bad a chain for the money has its own restaurant/gym/swimming pool etc, Cheadle is fairly close to manchester by either taxi or bus (do the taxi thing) and you have Didsbury up the road which is a good night out or there is Hyde (not the nicest town centre but still only 6 miles from central manchester ) and Ashton (about 5 miles from central manchester) but both on the "wrong side" to old trafford.
